  • A soldering/Desoldering station is no where near a sound investment, Unless you're doing it a lot.

  • Wick = worst invention ever...

Just get a desoldering Iron (has a bulb on top)

Or if can't find one get a desoldering pump (which tend to cost a few bucks more than the iron)

  • where can i get soldering tip that thin? can anyone please respond?

    thanks

    POw

  • You should have put some liquid flux on your braid that would have helped with the soaking up on the braid.

  • If you desolder more then a few parts a year then solder wick really sucks...!!!! I much prefer my Hakko 808 desoldering pump... With the Hakko 808 I can remove 10 caps in the same time it would take the most experienced tech to remove one cap using wick.

The 808 isn't cheap it list for $189 but you can get them on sale for $125. I do a lot of repair work and next to my oscilloscope and spectrum analyser the 808's about one of the best investments I've made. I'd replace it in a sec if it broke

  • I prefer the vaccuum solder suckers. Quick, easy and painless....

  • Thanks man, I finally know how to desolder correctly without having a mess on my hands.

All thats left is to *solder on correctly" and I should have no more problems.

  • I use Fluxed wick(not unfluxed) and liquid production flux on the wick as I am going. Keep in mind "Shovel Tips" can damage the masking around the pads for the other comment. This component is on an extremly larger ground plane than any other component installed on a pcb. Yes in Rework you will burn fingers, gloves were used here because the board was pre-heated in oven prior :)

  • Better results are obtained, when you open up the braid a bit (so you have small air pockets) for the solder to wick into !!

You also tend to use LESS solder wick for each joint.

Application of solder flux to the joint before desoldering is helpful with low flux or no clean solder joints.

  • i burnt my finger on copper wire...=(

  • any kind of flux on your braid cand do the work

  • @TheVinsLab not only that also bit larger tip sise hoof tip recommended to transfer heat faster

  • If you use a little liquid flux on your braid that would help the wicking action.
