Great vid; BUT avoid rinsing off soap of ANY kind into streams & lakes. At the end of the vid Dave rinses the soap off into the stream please dont do this! All vege based Soaps are made by saponifying the naturally occurring fatty acids in vegetable oils (coconut, olive etc). They are non toxic to humans & animals but mildly toxic to fish and HIGHLY toxic to aquatic invertebrates (important food for fish). Not saying never wash in the forest again (then u will smell like something) but..
Cont..If need to use soap in the forest - rinse it onto soil, not into water. Doesnt matter if you use Castile soap or if the soap is made with lye or potash ALL plant based soaps contain fatty acids (FAs) since they naturally occur in all plant oils. Soil microbes quickly degrade FAs and FAs are already present in the soil from naturally occurring plant metabolism. So rinse off ALL soap suds over soil - not directly into streams or where it can run into water!
how does thatyarrow work as a repellant? I have been looking and i heard one comment it works good but no more. How do ya make it? possibnle video comin?
Another great set, Dave. You are a great wealth of knowledge. I am going to give this a try tomorrow at work and make some soap. Maybe pine. Will see how much time we have. Keep up the good work.
by the way dave citronella oil is piosoness to ingest so id would put your squidgy cup through a boil wash .but great demo to makwe soap, you can also use birch leaves on thier own to wash hair, just steep them in cold water and then wash your hair in it,to wash dishes use the ash and fat from your meal but it s no good for your skin as it is too abraisive. can you do a demo on how to mak your wrist band please dave. thanks.
That's good insight on the poison aspect. I don't know about the squishy bowl and how poress it is but food grade containers for restaurants are suppose to be less poress but even then I would mix a poison in a bowl I would later eat out of.
Dave , you can also do this with beech leaves, but the old dried ones from the floor, they smell woody(obviously) and repel mossies and miges and other biting insects.
Dave, what are your thoughts on the oil on leaves from fresh BayLaurel? I was taught to rub the leaves on the skin to repel insects and keep some leaves in the pockets. Seemed effective. If you have covered this before I apologize.
This is about self reiance in all situations, you will find it vewry difficult to make lye soap in the woods period, it can be done but is very time consuming. Better to make soap on the fly by using Melt and Pour type Castile, that way you can use the oils you want for your situation. That is what this is about Sir,
I would rather not have bugs biting me than smelling nice. Where did you get those olive oil bars? and the centrinella oil? Good video gonna make some of those hopefully. God Bless
Another great informative video. Awesome job Dave. I have a quick question though, does washing or in a creek like the one in your video pollute the water or have any negative effects?
I've made soap before. From what I know it shouldn't. If it is just castile soap and a scent. It would pollute if you used detergent soap most people buy probably. The lye comes from wood and the olive oil from a plant so I imagine everything would biodegrade just fine. Plus a stream would filter it with rocks.
Dave, Another great additive to your soap is oatmeal. It works like pumice to clean better and soothes the skin from rashes, mosquito bites, etc. Great video though. 5/5
I 2nd this comment. My mother makes a lot of castile soap and the oatmeal trick works really well. Homemade soap is great for hunting because you can make almost sent neutral soap.
lol @ 1:37 "the garlic bomb will do that but probably will repell everyone else @ the same time."
