No, it is not Arabic. it is called Tigrigna...semitic language spoken in Eritrea and North Ethiopia which borders Eritrea.

It is because Arabic and Tigrigna belong to the same family of languages...semitic. So the similarity is because of that not because Tigrigna has Arabic finger print.

Yap...Tigre is older than Tigrinya and it is also believed that Tigrinya might have originated from Tigre, While Tigre from Ge'ez. In any case Tigre and Tigrinya are very close languages which share a lot of words and writing system. IMO if you know ether language(Tigre or Tigrinya) you can pick up the other one with ease.

I love the Tigre language too and I am trying to learn it on my free time as well.

I am also strong advocate of using NATIVE languages in Eritrea and I hope to see the Tigre language on equal footing to Tigrinya. Also I wish the Eritrean government speeds up the process of implementing the Tigre language as working language of Eritrea along side Tigrinya in the near future.
