The EAA screwed us lets face it. It's all about money... they don't even do their affordable flying area anymore hmmm wonder why??? it was one of the most highly attended event. Why is it so much to get in to an airshow? what is it all about huh? The EAA needs to wake up.
I enjoyed the narration but there's one major counterargument you didn't adress; the (maybe very small amount but not less fatal) accidents with ultralights. this made the EAA and such turn from a 'custumer-driven' organisation to a 'governmental-regulation-driven' organisation.
This is OUTRAGEOUS! There is this constant push for a NANNY-STATE that will regulate EVERYTHING, opressing people. What is this insannity? --look now they are pushing a law to prevent even people from...(get this!) plant their own VEGETABLE GARDENS, or choose the content of the school lunchbox of their kids. These examples i give are NOT exagerations--smell the common trait, smell the thin fascism of nanny-state... Grrrr
i grew up in the seventies and had the bug and dream of designing, building and flying ultralights, i thought that it was going to be the next craze like football with every one wanting to do it and to be a apart of the ultralight movement. seriously, for real. for who in america would not want to own their own ultralight air craft? who? like the song says "in a sky full of people only a few want to fly isn't that crazy, its not only crazy it is chicken shit. americans are chickens, cowards...
The Sport Pilot designation seems to have a single goal and it's not pilot recruitment, it's retention. These major manufacturers seem to believe that the only market to serve is existing private Pilots who can afford the 6 figure cost for airplanes that were initially intended to bridge the gap between "average joes" desiring to fly and the seemingly economically out of reach costs of aviation.
If a proven manufacturer produced an attainable $30k LSA tomorrow, that "gap" would begin to close.
When you're developing something cutting edge, whether an experimental or UL, you shouldn't have to go to the EAA to see if what you're doing is ok, as we don't need 2 FAA's. I could never imagine buying an airplane anymore, even a certified one. I'm gonna build and fly my own experimental category airplanes / helicopters.
This is a bit off topic, but I just heard a news story that 2 F-16s were scrambled today to intercept an ultralight aircraft that entered US airspace from Mexico. It's been known for a long time that drug smugglers have been using ULs to haul drugs across the border. Now I don't know what the F-16s did, but the UL turned around & crossed back into Mexico. Do you think that after landing, the UL pilot might have had to unload his shorts?
I don't know anything beyond the basics given by the radio news story. I assume you're correct, but that's enough. They just needed to buzz him close enough a few times to show him he'd been spotted. He'd know he couldn't land on the US side in secrecy, his landing site would be swarming w/ agents. He'd be arrested, his plane & the drugs would get confiscated & his confederates who were waiting to take the drugs could get caught as well. I wonder how close they got to him.
YOU ARE RIGHT, 100%, ITS ALWAYS THE SAME THE LITTLE GUY HAS TO FIGHT BACK WITHOUT THE RESOURCES OF THE BIG BRUTS AND GANGSTERS REPRESENTED BY BIG MONEY, ONCE WE ARE LEGISLATED AGAINST, ITS ALL OVER, NOW IS THE TIME TO DYSTROY THEM ALL, WE NEED TO BE READY TO AGRESSIVELY ATTACK AND DEFEND THE JjAMERICAN WAY , DON'T LET THESE COMMUNIST FACISTS PIGS CRUSH US, KEEP A LOW PROFILE AND KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@scottjamesvincent Damn Right, the EAA has sold us down the river and now wants to cash in. They no longer represent us and we are the folks who made the EAA! I have been working on a grass roots movement for several years now!
Welcome to the shit situation in the UK. You'll just have to find ways to footlaunch until they shut that particular avenue of pleasure off too! Over here you can basically fly it if it doesn't have wheels.

It is called an Easy Riser, or Ikarus. It was originally a hang glider. John Moody put an engine on it in the mid 70's.

Great Vid Dave. The USA needs to Adopt Canada's rules for Ultralight. USA has destroyed its grass roots.. It is the beginning of the end.
