Iron Heart actually produces a lot of their fabric in house. They have vintage looms from the USA. Also, one seamstress sews the pants or shirts (not production made). There is a video on YouTube called "How Iron Heart Is Made", check it out. Words like chainstitch, overlock, flatseam, gusset and selvedge need to become more common place in the fashion world. Does leyendecker use any vintage equipment? I'd love to see a video of a piece being made.
@leyendeckerLA Lisa, unfortunately we have not met, but I would love to meet you. If u feel like it, email me sometime, it's spotteddogmemphis@yahoo.com. As for my fashion sense, I'm into Iron Heart from Japan. It's American workwear that's made with the best cotton on all of the old American shuttle looms (makes Carhartt look foolish). Please tell me you have a Union Special at Leyendecker! I could talk your ears off about vintage style clothing. Hit me up.
@spotteddogmemphis we love vintage finishing techniques! we've managed to stay away from denim, but maybe one day? ;) I keep meaning to make it to the Inspiration trade show!
@leyendeckerLA Guess I'm in this 'till the end!! That such a good idea, now i don't have to keep making my own every time -takes way long >.<
I'm currently attending San Diego Mesa College/city college. At Mesa I'm taking Apparel Construction I & the fashion lab, then transfer to CSU LA where all the big dogs are and get an internship there! c:
This is nothing like Kell on Earth or The Devil Wears Prada. Looks like you can do fashion and still be a nice person. And your interns look so organized. You just make it look easy, though I'm sure it's not.
@LordBalto OMG so not easy! We can be mean when we need to be...you can be a nice person in fashion, but you have to have a really thick skin cuz this shit gets brutal! We try to make sure it's not like Kell on Earth or Devil Wears Prada (but how much do you love that movie?! i LOVE that movie) Go check out the documentary Seamless on Netflix streaming, that will give a very accurate look into the fashion world! xo
@leyendeckerLA Yeah, I like it too (Anne Hathaway isn't hard to look at either). I figured it was harder than you make it look, which is usually a sign that you know your business. And thanks for the reference. I'll check it out.
Do you guys enjoy your job? I basically want to do everything you ladies are doing: Own a fashion business, well basically be in your shoes! What is the biggest highlight of your job? What are the pros and cons to your job?
By the way I saw on a comment that you recommended the book Nine Heads, well I bought it and it's pretty freaking awesome! I bought it at my colleges bookstore so I cant wait to use it!
@TheTapioca21 i would not recommend this job 2 anyone UNLESS they will literally die w/o working in fashion. Like they eat, breath, sleep fashion - cuz this industry is so cut throat & it can be so heartbreaking at times. There are really high highs & really low lows. owning ur own line, especially if u r self funded, is a labor of love & a total roller coaster. Like just yesterday i was watching Toddlers & Tiaras & a lady was wearing 1 of our tops...that was fun, i love when that happens :)
would love to intern here!

@leyendeckerLA Unfortunately I live in England but if you'd be willing to fly me out and make me your protege I'd be down for that!

@CassieSmyth lol i don't think we have the budget to fly in interns internationally! But if we did...we'd totally bring you out ;)
