Libyans were able to get free healthcare, free education, etc because much of this came from money earned from the sale of oil. The trouble for Libya was that it had sanctions against it for many years, but despite that, they were able to provide a healthcare system that covered most things. However, the sanctions included medical supplies - some drugs were not available at hospitals and people had to go to Tunisia to buy these drugs. The country however, had a high standard of living

Yeah, Qaddafi was just sooooo horrible. Now I see why this man was viciously murdered by those with no soul. He was actually a DECENT person. We all know THE EVIL ONES always HATE the good. I really wish I could have met Qaddafi and shook his hand. I am a Chinese, an outsider. From my many observation and read about him, Gaddafi is not a bad person. I support him. Sadly, he was kill and Libya was destroyed mainly because he is too straight forward and don't know how to lies in playing politics. He did good to the country and the people. His mistake is that his mouth is "bad" (but his intention is good) and trust people too much. I feel sorry for him and Libya. Liyba now is Islamist with al-qaeda and worst. @fandanstan I'm on your side here BUT I do have to disagree when folks refer to the healthcare provided in Canada (or any other Government run system) as free.
It's not free.. everyone pays into it though taxes.

The americans wanted to get rid of gaddafi because he had a programme to share ALL oil wealth to lybian citizens, this wouldve made lybian oil expensive to outsiders, plus his other program was introduce the gold dinar that would easily become popular and smash the US dollar. Well if you read the book Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein you will know how the oil will be divided up between oil companies from the West, as it happened in Iraq. You can also read Fuel On The Fire by Greg Muttit - who documented the Iraq conflict/oil before and after 2003. You will always learn some facts when you respond to my comments. I doubt you will return to libya

@yingdiskette - he was hardly mad. He had to put up with a lot of lies that were told about him by the world media. In my country, people get paid allowance if they have no job, yet some still beg for money. Maybe this woman is telling the truth, but Libyans are able to get free healthcare. Libya was subject to sanctions for many years and these were only lifted in 2009. You have to understand the pride many libyans have in themselves. It is not just Muammar Gadaffi who thinks like that.

I don't think its a problem, once these people who think Gaddafi had to go sees what their country turns into once the West develops it for their benefit, its resources stolen for nothing. @lol82490 - well i spoke to someone living in libya (who was on youtube) and they are hardly living in peace. There are rebels roaming the cities looking for anyone who supported Muammar Gadaffi and there are video footage of black africans being accused of being mercenaries. Now that Muammar is gone, the oil will be contracted out to foreign oil companies and pressure will be put on the rebels to make laws to let them do that. Like the poeple of Iraq, the Libyan people will not be the winners

Just wait when they try to run the oil themselves and tell their new masters they want to do things their way. The next minute they will see the corrupt western media cranking up the old propaganda machine and you will hear words like "Al Qaeda", "Terrorists" in the same sentence as "Libya" and "Oil". @lol82490- The Al qaeda rebels were the only ones who - without pretense - hated Muammar Gadaffi so obviously they were recruited to make the conflict in LIbya look legitimate. And they came from all over the middle east /north africa like vultures and watched as the real libyan people died under the bombs - the army & ordinary men, women and children. When the dust cleared, they murdered anyone still alive. The al qaeda rebels were posers. The real freedom fighters died defending their nation
