your explanation of Peterbilt's 127 inch hood is incorrect. The 1693 always did fit fine in the short hood 359's. It was the Cummins KT's that needed the longer hood, because they had over 250 more cubic inches than the 1693. The only special feature Pete did for the Cats, was put a removable plate on the firewall, so a mechanic could work on the rear of the engine, from inside the cab, prior to head removal.
No power steering, and they still had to back trailers loaded up into tight spots. Gob bless the drivers of that day - they were true road gladiators.
There is nothing like the sound of a 1600 series engine starting on a cold day.Plus,If you don"t
have power steering you learn to turn while your moving. And,if the engine revs to 2500,the governoer would cut off the fuel.Bottom line, great video.Keep kicking the cat!
Hi, how are you? I saw 2 or 3 peter with 1693 cat engine listed on truckpaper but they were all 119 inches hood! Any idea why your is an extended hood? Remember the vin of your truck?
@FreemanTrucking As far as I know they only put the 1693 in the extended hood. That was the reason Peterbilt created the extended hood was to accomodate the 1693 engine because it was so long. The VIN is 42289P. There were was so much demand for the look of the extended hood look Peterbilt keep as an option for detroit and cummins powered trucks but it originally was designed for the 1693.
@bluejay148 No jake brakes on the 1693. Cat used a hydraulic engine brake called a brakesaver. It was a very heavy add on but was a very effective engine brake. This truck does not have the brakesaver option.
I wonder if it has center point steering so you can steer without power assist? I will have to check on the cams maybe one for int and one for exh not sure. But I remember the large rear gear case 10-4!
@oevoz No center point steering. Armstrong!!! It has two overhead camshafts, one for intake and one for exhaust. It will make a good driver out of you, you will learn to make it in one shot. It will wear you after one try. No back and forth with this steering wheel.
@swcknz That was only to show what it is capable of and to show the difference between todays low rpm engines. As you know it does its best work between 1650 and 2200 rpm.
i have a guy wanting to trade me a kenworth with a 1693 i am tempted but parts aint to common around here and i work all my trucks but it is a nice ride there lets do what ever it takes to keep em rollin
@malonemotorsports1 Your right, it has double overhead cams and it has glows plugs. All that noise at idle and when the engine isn't working comes from the precombustion chambers. As soon as you put a load on it it becomes one of the smoothest engines you will ever drive. It also has a turbo sound you won't find on any other engine.
Not sure what you mean by "float" gears but you can shift without the clutch easily. I cheat a little when I'm bobtailing but always use the clutch when loaded. The engine is so responsive it makes it very easy to shift.
Your absolutely right, I should have made that clear. I was speaking in generic trucker terms meaning the longer hood, compared to the 119' BBC. Thanks.
is that the whine of a 13 speed i hear?

Nice Pete, when I was still OTR my main ride was an 81 Pete COE Double Bunk. Dang I miss driving sometimes, that's when I love videos like this...

I can't believe your winding that up to 2500 rpm
After driving the 1693's for more than a few years in the 70's your not going to keep that toy in one piece for long.

@stockwood1 Agreed, we had a guy that was use to driving Cummins with a lot of rpm's kick a rod out the side of a 1693's block. What a shame.
The 1693's were my favorite to drive with the clatter and huge whistle of the turbo.

Man that is a sweet rig. Nice driving.

@TTmaniax Thanks for the nice compliment. After 36 years of driving a 13 speed, I guess I've had enough practice. Thanks.

1693 if i aint mistaken is a overhead cam and has glow plugs and the pumps make a killer noise at idle u would think the rods are comin out the block

Put 6" miter cuts on this thing, you will love the sound, trust me. 1693 cats are the best sounding cats, they sound great with straight pipes.

@Hotrodx199 I'm sure they do. The 1693s have a unique sound, that's for sure!

127" is from the front of the hood to the very back of the cab not just the hood.
