These idioms and sayings are all quite common. I'm not sure why so many of you haven't heard them. Perhaps you are young, or don't read much, or don't converse with Americans very often. I'm not trying to pass judgment, but I do wonder how native-born Americans have missed hearing these common expressions.
Idioms are like spices in food; they make a language come alive. Learn them! Use them! Create your own! Have fun with your language!

i actually never heard this phrase. i been in the us for 10 yrs now and i have talked to quite many people. This idiom is actually more difficult than just saying "be responsible" that is why noone uses this idiom.
