  • how ca I use the Rode video mic with this?

  • Instead of using rubber bands, Use hair ties. They are thicker and more durable.

  • @filmriot one thing i love about your videos is any diy build always involves a trip to home depot and best was how you said you aimlessly wondered the plumbing section 9 times out of time when you do that there they just wanna help but another reason is when people walk around that department they think people are trying to steal copper pipes only reason i know is i work at a home depot :p

  • From behind you look like adam sandler, Ryan thats sad

  • Great Video!! Very Helpful... damn it, all I need now is $25!

  • what mic did you use?

  • what song is that? It sounds awesome!.

  • your videos of DIY stuff are going to make me go broke even though they are cheap! I want to MAKE THEM ALL. ITS LIKE POKEMON FOR FILM

  • can we use armasil for the soft thing to add u were talking about?

  • @Webcast01 ya

  • Every boom op I've ever worked with looked exactly like that.

  • Hmmm , wonder why Erick didn't come raging here

  • @DownWordProductions

    Canon T3I

  • Could you tell me what camera do they use... BC i am thinking about getting a new one and I need a good suggestion on a camera with great quality... But i cant afford the Red Epic lol

  • @DownWordProductions they use the canon 5d mkII. It is about $2,300

  • This saved my butt actually I lost my shock mount so used this to make my own. Thanks for saving me money

  • Wai U tok so fasss?

  • Just ordered an ntg 2 and built on of these bad boys! instead of those zap straps though i used a metal plumbing clamp, because there screw tighten and get allot tighter than the zap strap!

  • Yet another great video from the Film Riot crew! Keep it up guys!

  • i was able to make this diy model for 5$ !!

  • @ChrisPintoBean i was able to not care for free

  • How about if there are two or more people?

  • skip ad 5:43

  • 5.43 skip ad

  • There arefitting with smaller side openings available, which may cut you down to only one 1/2" screw socket for the boom pole. Also, you can bypass the plastic ties and clips by merely cutting pairs of slots into the PVC T piece.

  • can i use a karaoke mic for this?

  • @Dizzy2810 You could, but because it has a Cardiod pattern, it picks up a lot more room noise...which makes the audio a bit more annoying, but still better than the camera mic...

But there are some cheap ones on ebay or Amazon for $30 or so...

  • who noticed his shirt

where did you get it from? cool.

  • You can buy a real one for cheaper on Ebay.

  • sick!

  • Yes Sony MDR V6 ftw. I just got a pair for Christmas :)

  • how do Bruno listen to the sound that was coming form the shotgun mic? like at 5:45

  • @thearmyoftree I'm guessing that pair of headphones he was wearing was plugged into the external recorder into which the shotgun mic was feeding sound, and this would allow him to monitor whatever the mic was picking up.

  • Any UK viewers that know of any stores to buy PVC pipe in the UK, I've been searching for ages.

  • @usedtobeawkward B&Q or plumbing shops? Might as well just get them off the internet tbh

  • @pkwithobby Thanks. I've looked around online, never really found anything reasonably priced. B&Q is the only place I haven't actually visited. I'll go there next time I'm near one. Thanks again!

  • @usedtobeawkward Wouldnt get my hopes up about B&Q, they'll probably be around the same price if not more than online. Wickes and perhaps even homebase might have the same stuff but they usually have a worse selection at similar prices.

  • @pkwithobby I've seen Homebase's selection, they have literally about 5 PVC fittings. Wickes, I completely forgot about and they're very DIY. LOL. So I'll have a look there too. It was mainly shipping and having to buy in bulk that was the online price issue.

  • @usedtobeawkward On my channel, we will be teaching you how to make films on a budget. That is what I want to do, because here in the UK, we do not get things like hardware stores or Walmart, or Home Depot. So If you are here in the UK, and you want to make a movie, then this is the place for you! Next week, I will be making a tutorial on a DIY boom pole for less than £20

  • @MechaFIlmsUK Interesting. I was thinking about doing the same... so maybe I won't check out your channel. LOL, just kidding. I'll check it out next week. :)

  • @usedtobeawkward B&Q in the plumbing section, sizes might be different but its all there.

  • DOG!! 6:19

  • If your mic already has the threading, couldn't you just just connect it straight to the broom pole or whatever you're using?

  • why's it a home ''depoh''? isn't it a Depot....

  • @wtffgigi Ugh wtf? yeah it's spelled Depot and it's pronounced deep-oh.

  • You shouldn't be using that type of shotgun mic indoors anyways. Shotgun microphones like the one you are using should be used outdoors or in rooms with more space. Interior shots you should use a small diaphragm condenser. We use the Sennheiser 416 (Industry Standard) and the Schoeps MK41 + CMC6 Amp.

  • @thechamphlr (IN SARCASTIC VOICE) YOU DONT SAY?!?!?!

  • OMG it's sounds the same as your regular boom or mic XD

  • filmriot should be more popular on youtube

  • 5:04 funny!

  • You know, you could save the cash from the zip ties and the picture hanger things by cutting notches into the pvc and running the rubber bands outside of the mount.

  • lol bruno's stocking is way cute

  • Clever girl

  • Hey Ryan, I am making a War film and I need some tips on camera angles for a more effective professional look and ( including best angles for hand-to-hand combat scenes)

I REALLY NEED HELP, THIS IS MY BIGGEST PRODUCTION YET!!

    -Antonio

  • @greekajp82 dude they've already done a war movie episode, just check through their videos

  • Anyone else noticed that Bruno is HUGE in japan?

  • Love your videos! I'm not trying to nit pick or anything, just trying to help (I'm a sound engineer) it's best to point the shotgun mic at the actors chest rather than their mouth to prevent too much sibilance, It also provides a warmer sound (I've found anyway but it does depend a lot on which microphone you're using) again I'm only trying to help and I absolutely love your videos!

  • @rozzers13 thank you! it helped! :)

  • @DannyLastName racist? come on man its sterotyping not being racist and besides THAT is just a world wide joke..who cares

  • I am not joking I was seriously just about to make my own boom yesterday out of PVC pipe and randomly they post this video.... SCARY ESP!!!

  • What would you recomend to use to build a zepplin for it?

  • Any Balls

I saw what you did there. -_-

  • Comment removed

  • What shotgun mic do ya'll use?

  • what's the name of that techno song?

  • DO i see the swingers/made "the money collection"

  • My only problem with this DIY is that I can still hear an echo I'm guessing from the inside of the PVC houseing

  • @kingofkards91 That is an echo from the room we were in. It would be there either way.

  • @kingofkards91 The recording part of the mic only records in front of it. The mount does not effect that in any way.

  • @kingofkards91 no, it's still the room. They are recording what is there. If the room is echoey, the audio will be echoey.

  • Been a while since you guys have done something like this...I dig it. I dig it almost as much as I dig the thought of Taylor Lautner never acting again..

  • Hey everyone! I know you may be busy but we'd really appreciate it if you could take a minute to stop by our channel; and check out some of our comedy and action short films! You may be interested, and if you are be sure to comment, rate, and subscribe! Thanks so much for the support! Happy Holidays! :D

  • Bfx did this first

  • Hey Ryan I just got a shotgun mic and when i plug it into my camera the audio level only shows that the left side is getting audio. Is this normal, or is my mic broken?

  • @IronSideFilms That means you have a mono microphone. You can either get a mono to stereo plug adapter, duplicate the track to the right channel on posproduction, or just change the sound to mono entirely.

  • @deluxe007mx Thanks a lo!

  • @IronSideFilms It's not uncommon, not apply Fill to right under audio effects in Adobe Premiere Pro

  • where did you get that shirt!!! i want it badly

  • @AlexDylanVideo You can find it on the Triune Films (Ryan's) store at triunefilms . bigcartel . com

  • @AlexDylanVideo LOL, I'm assuming you were talking about Ryan's shirt, the black one, right?

  • Nice Shirt ;)

  • @Buzzard91 dude i wood pay like 100 bucks for that

  • @CuponkDudes I would too dude (:

  • bfx did it first

  • @henk123454 Film Riot did it better.

  • Excellent. Also, you can find telescoping poles with threaded ends like you used in the Cleaning Supplies section of Home Depot.

  • Awesome shirt! Do you guys sell it or is that from a different company?

  • i saw some comments on the fact that you can hear the rubber bands. i suggest swapping the rubber bands with those cheap ponytail bands you can buy. they are softer and you shouldnt be able to hear the noise at all

  • You didnt even thank FRUGALFILMMAKER for the idea! Well you guys did do a better job at being interesting =)

  • like this vid so he'll make more!

  • Wuzz up homie,

Me and my bros wanna make a intense scene. U mind showing how camera shots can help? Better yet can u talk about how different types of shots can effect a movie? Thanks catcha later

    Ty

  • where did you get youre shirt

  • Wow awesome video, plz make more builds like this!

  • I made this and tested it out and when I listened to the audio, you could hear the rubber bands rubbing against the mic. Any fixes?

  • Excellent knowledge guys! Again you have inspired!

  • You talk really fast man... you know that don't you?

  • Step 1: Acquire a Pole.

Step 2: Attach Mic to Pole.

    Step 3: ???

    Step 4: PROFIT!

  • I spy all of the seasons of Gilmore Girls in his DVD collection

  • @cjbyler hahaha i was going to say the same thing

  • @cjbyler I saw that too. Im guessing his wife's

  • @cjbyler Those DVD's belong to my wife. I'd rather rip my eyes out and use them as golf balls than watch that show! haha! But now I must ask... How were you able to recognize them so easily? ;)

  • @filmriot lol agreed, gilmore girls is the worst. Great DYI

  • anyballs

  • Hey Ryan, I was just wondering where you guys get all of your awesome music for your videos. I want to creative a scene with a lot of intensity and emotion. But I can't find any good music to go along with it and sell the emotion. Thanks-Blade

  • @BladeG1995 Pro Scores by Video copilot!!!!

  • @BladeG1995 PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION!

  • @BladeG1995 He's addressed it in the August 15th, 2011 episode, but generally, due to their time constraints the show uses licensed music from APM Music. They also have a list of places to get royalty free music listed on their Facebook page in the notes section. Personally, though, I suggest going out and support your local music scene. Many local bands will have no problem giving you permission to use their music as long as you give them credit for it.

  • Very helpful!

  • What is the model of the microphone and the voice recorder that you used?

  • Awesome tips Ry Guy!!

  • Hey peoples! If there is anyone in Australia looking for a similar style pole, Bunnings Warehouse sells a blue and yellow cobweb broom for approx. $7 - $9. They have the extension capability and the cobweb broom end screws off easily. I actually have used them for music recording setups, video work and even as tent poles. I used them to hold up a tarp over my tent while camping. Worked quite well : )

  • *How to Build a $25 DIY Shock Mount

  • I got bacon flavored toothpaste from my brother this year.

  • They mad a tutorial on this on BFX DIY

  • I want Bruno's shirt.

  • Hey Ryan, where does the other end of the XLR cable go into? Does it go to the camera or another receiver type thing like a Zoom. Thanks!

  • @skatekid1199 Yes. You can use an external audio device like a Zoon and you can record directly from the camera if you have an XLR port on your camera.

  • is it just me but does Bruno look really awkward at 7:30 - 8:10

  • Nice

  • I love the show! Is it just me or is this episode just slightly out of sync?

  • I'm small in Japan :/

  • See the dislike bar? Neither do I.

  • I just noticed "I'm Huge in Japan".. has anyone noticed it too?

  • what's a boom pole?

  • @endlessitaly21 It holds the mic in which you record your audio with.

  • I want to shoot a sword fight scene for an action short. Can you show how to choreograph them?

  • i just started shooting with an SLR I have the Canon 60D and I was wondering how would I get the most out of recording from the camera itself or having something else recording the sound?

  • Great project guys, I think I will try this!

  • dear ryan

can u make the FUS RO DAH!!! effect

    from skyrim

  • Thank you for reminding me why I watch your show. Practical filmmaking advice! Since it seems to be so detrimental to hold the mic anywhere other than directly over the actor's head, do you have any advice on how to shoot wider, longer takes with dialogue? I'd rather shoot that way and also do coverage as a backup than constantly do over the shoulder shots.

  • Dear Ryan and the Film Riot crew, you are awesome.

  • watts up Film riot i got bad news. I was trying to shoot a scene of two people in the car where they drop on person off but my actors were too stupid, cz they tried to go fast and they crashed into gargeses it was a horrible crash but they are ok except that they had to pay $100.000, dammn its sad

  • Now if there we're only a way to thread the xlr down so it doesn't tangle..

  • What shotgun mic is that and what do you use to collect your audio?

  • i see FRIENDS on the shelf, right?

  • do more diys please

  • 1:00 lmao i do that at home depot to and im a girl

  • Holy Crack Ryan!!! SLOW DOWN!!! :)

  • Called the "noise what?" 6:46

This is pretty ingenious!!!! I just need a mic. LOL

  • Ryan why do you look so sad in this video?

  • wow i was about to step out and buy stuff to build one of these tomorrow! i'm glad i saw this before i went out!

  • I did this a long time ago! The t joint i got had the 1/2" threading built in though. then i filed four grooves on each side, then used 4 rubber bands stretched from one side to the other. much easier.

  • This is a much better build than the ones I've see online. Thanks Ry!

  • Can you do an episode comparing your shotgun mic vs. one of the $25 cheapies you can find on auction sites like ebay? I've been looking at the ones with XLR jacks on them vs. the hard wired type so I can choose cable quality.

  • @terencehood Hi, I do have an HTDZ model HT-320A condenser shotgun mic that I picked up on ebay for cheap and honestly, it sounds amazing. I'm very impressed with how crisp the audio is. I've worked with some AKG and Sennheiser shotgun mics before, of course those 2 sounded better but for the price, the HTDZ is an excellent choice if you have a small budget.

  • Great video and tips you guys! Thanks!

  • I have that exact same yellow light thing!

  • You guys are such a life saver, just was looking for a boom pole today and I found this :D

  • nice shirt!

  • "Like" If your the 301 viewer!

  • First, he used the exact pole I planned to use to build my DIY. Second, remember to apply that glue he used in a Well Ventilated area as it is highly toxic and dangerous. In any case, excellent video!

  • you guys should do a diy blimp as a follow up!

  • this is great advice!

  • Also, the mic is better shockproofed and holds better when you cross the rubberbands. It's more difficult to put in, but you get extra security.

  • I just want to point out that the change in audio quality based on if the boom is above or below is more apparent inside than outside, and can be fixed slightly by rotating the mic to have less of a direct line of capture with the jaw line, which is partially, along with the chest, causing the change. I've had to switch to below on an outside shoot due to shadows, and we honestly heard no difference on surface level. It also has to do with the mic and the recorder.

  • for $7 you can just buy a 6 foot extendable painters pole

  • @awesomecreativeguy Thanks for the great suggestion.

  • holy shit you have a massive dvd collection

  • Bruno's shirt!!!
