Nice job! I tried to plant okra in colorado and I didn't have any luck, I guess I'd better try freezing them next season!
Ever started your tomatoes and peppers from seed? This year was my first year doing that and It was successful surprisingly. I am very smug about it, and I had a good crop and I will be saving some seeds for next years tomatoes, I hope to get some good ones.
I've never done peppers from seed. I've done tomatoes a couple of times. I had great luck with them but it's a little extra work of course. The upside is you can read up on varieties and try out a lot of new and interesting sounds ones:) I grew mine inside under fluorescent lights.
Very nice! It is now August 5th and I have to say everything is comming along rather slow. My Tomatoes are another story, they are taller than me. This encourages me to share my garden also! Keep up the great work!
Thanks:) My beans have now pretty much crapped out and were very disappointing. I only got 2 pickings off of them. The cukes did very good but are about finished. Peppers were a little subpar. Squash continues to be really good. Okra looks like it's going to be amazing. Tomatoes are fair.
Best wishes with your transplantings. We find that our Rosemary bushes hate being transplanted..and they look like such hardy things too. You know I have never tried Okra in my life and I consider myself a foodie! My cat shows that side of herself to us.. that 'angle' I mean -lol! You have put a lot of work into your vegies. Have you ever had fungus from too much watering?
Thanks Maria:) My transplanted beans are still looking good. I also transplanted a squash plant that looked perfect for about
10 days but it's turned a little yellow now. Suzy is a foodie cat:) I've never seen a kitty beg so much for people food. Then she usually just sniffs it and walks away. She *HAS* to check it out though. I always say she's looking for some magic food. She *knows* there's something wonderful out there somewhere she's not tried yet, LOL. No, I've never had fungus.
And i miss it all! The smell of the little sprouts and the wet dirt! Wow Okra is one ive never done. Ill be glad to see its growth! Carly is a prom queen! haha
OMG, I can't believe you've never planted okra. Texas heat would be perfect for okra! Hopefully you'll have a place soon where you can plant another garden. I've always called Carly a prom queen. She's the prettiest cat I've ever owned. And she's just a little bit stuck up but I love her anyway:)))
I'm trying to grow some peppers, lol. Even though I would like to be, I'm not very good at the gardening thing, but watching your gardening vids is like having my own virtual garden. I didn't even know you could have 20 minute something videos. Is that something that you can have when you're a partner, or can everyone do that?
When I joined YouTube in Sept. 2006 EVERYONE who got a "Directors" account was able to post videos in excess of 10 minutes. Sometime in early 2007 they started limiting all new "Directors" to 10 minutes or less and grandfathered in the old directors as far as the 10 minute limit goes. So being a partner doesn't have anything to do with it. It's just a timing thing. It wouldn't surprise me if they someday take away *everyones* ability to post long vids.
Thanks dorotwhy! I do enjoy gardening (and eating the produce:) I don't know if I'd quite say I'm passionate about it though:) I can get a little lazy about it at times.
I understand! It seems when it's time to weed the garden that MY lazy streak appears. Also, hanging around in the sunshine all day from morning to sundown can cause exhaustion. You are a delightful gardener to watch. I'd say that is passion exemplified.
I spent a very nice morning weeding my parents strawberries, and should have done more, but time run out!! My parents used to have a large plot for vegetables and such like in their garden, but as they no longer can 'work the land' themselves, they only grow strawberries, potatoes and onions now, on a much smaller plot! Now as I'm back in the UK I need to concentrate on the desert that is my own garden this summer.. :) It needs a serious re-think, I guess!! I
Ya, gardens are always in a state of change. Potatoes actually are quite a bit of work because you have to hill them up several times. I used to plant quite a bit more stuff than I do now but it simply gets to be far too much work. Hope you had a really nice trip Rob!
So Babs likes a roll in the hay, LOL! She DOES look like she's enjoying that.
Carly, not so much.
:-D
It's impressive progress you're making here with this garden, Blink. I don't think I've ever eaten okra, although I've made Oprah the butt of many okra jokes over the years - does that count?
Actually I wish I had a video of Carly the first time she ever saw my garden. She repeatedly dived under the hay mulch and made little furrows in it like a mole would. It was hysterical. Unfortunately she got any eye infection from it and I had to take her to the vet. She recovered nicely though. I'm sure Oprah and eaten tons of fried okra in her life. It's one of the things which has given her the foundation she has today:) Whoops, I guess shes the butt of *my* okra joke now, LOL.
I love your garden videos. I wish I lived closer to you so I could come by and get a basket of them good veggies you are growing. I know they are going to be the best tasting ever because you are giving your garden lots of TLC...Your kitties love to garden right along with you that is so cool!
Okra! Ok, I admit I've never really had that much Okra, probably because it's never been prepared right. How do you do it?
we've got jalepeno, green pepper, tomato, cucumber, watermelon, yellow squash, and carrots in our little garden. We don't know what we're doing, though, so we've probably got way too much in a little area!
So far, everything is going great, most from seed. We've got a couple nickle size tomatoes already!
Preparation is pretty simple. I slice mine crosswise into 3/8" slices, roll them in cornmeal and then fry them in oil in an iron skillet until they're the doneness I prefer. I salt and pepper them while cooking. It's best not to overload the pan with them because they'll get too soggy and tear up. An iron skillet with a thin metal spatula works the best. I start mine out on a medium heat and then turn the heat up fairly high (but not super high) after they get to cooking really good.
Wow, it sounds like you're going to be busy! A couple of months ago I'd just about decided I was going to be lazy this year and only plant a few tomatoes. Then one thing led to another and I wound up planting as much as last year plus some okra, LOL. Best of luck with all of your garden locations!!!
Great garden vlog, Robert...everything looks fantastic. Hey, I have a question for you. I have beautiful squash plants that are flowering everyday but no actual fruit...hmmm...this has stumped me!!! Any ideas? Nice to see someone else who gardens barefooted...hehehehe
Thanks Mic! Sometimes it just takes a little patience waiting for squash to produce. About the only thing I can think of is I do know that squash has both male and female blossoms and has to pollinate via insects in order to produce. I guess there's a chance that your's isn't getting pollinated properly. You could get a Q-Tip and do a little manual pollinating if you're worried about it. Cont.
Gardening barefooted is the only way to go! It feels good, plus you compact your soil less when you're barefoot. I exercise out in the yard barefooted too:)
Your garden is a work of ART! Is that your camper? I love campers.. I don't have one yet, but someday I will have one. LOL. I love OKRA!! Carly is so beautiful!! xoox
Thanks Mari! The camper belongs to my dad, although he's never went camping in it a single time, LOL. Okra rocks!!! I think Carly is the prettiest cat I've ever owned. She's also the most aloof cat I've ever owned.
WooHoo!!! I just informed Carly of your vote. While I appreciate you voting for her, Carly seemed to take it in her usual laid back style. If elected, expect her to eat a lot, stay out half the night doing God knows what, sleep till noon, and expect to have praise heaped upon her for doing the simplest of tasks:) All in all, much better than many of our current elected officials.
Didn't it just absolutely have you on the edge of your seat, LOL. I mean who needs Indiana Jones when you have a cliffhanger like will the transplanted beans survive or not:)))
You might have had it steamed or boiled or in soup. Rolled in cornmeal and fried is okra at it's tastiest. However lots of cafeteria style restaurants have it fried too and even I don't like theirs. It's just not the same because there's has too much breading on it and has been frozen at one point. Frozen is never as good as fresh.
I'm not too surprised you don't know what okra is. It really needs a LOT of warm weather to do well and it doesn't transport well, so I'm afraid you Canadians are unfortunately pretty much out of luck when it comes to this delicacy. For some odd reason when it comes to peas I prefer the canned variety. I've only planted them one time. They're an early season thing so the time for planting them has passed. Rabbits LOVE them, LOL. Thanks for watching it all the way through Pip!!!
Yep you definitely covered a lot of ground with a lot of green stuff! Quite impressive how everyting is coming along - we had a storm 2 days ago and it didn't do my herbs a lot of good - hoping they will revive without having to re-seed
I'm very pleased with how things are coming along compared to last year. Hopefully your herbs will rejuvenate themselves. An herb garden would pretty much be wasted on me I'm afraid. I don't go much more extensive with my cooking than salt and pepper. I did once eat at a restaurant that seasoned their pork chops with ginger which I really liked though.
We eat a lot of ginger and I've just googled how to grow it since you mentioned it - so that is my next project for the day - just checked and the Dill survived and the chives are sprouting - so panic over
Now seeeee, your herbs could have used some of those things I drove in the ground next to my peppers that I had the Scotch tape on:) Glad all is well in the Random Garden!
Wow! that was quite extensive. that's a lot of work you have been doing. Watching you prepare the Okra was really interesting. I don't know what they are but it will be fun for me to find out. Everything is sprouting so nicely. Are you planting some pea pods for me? lol Yes I watched the whole thing, including the kitty cats ... Doing the Veggie Dance lol
