Cap...Packard has a 1/2" spindle roughing gouge. 50 + 10 is too rich for my blood though.

Because I need the point of the center to support the piece between centers. The soft touch would not offer any support..

Instead of painting them you could just use different kinds of wood and throw a finish on them. They would look different.
