I can not beleive that idiot who ran across the tracks at Time Frame: 2:36.The conductor must have seen himgo as the horn sounds just as he took off across the tracks...What a fool.
why are they using diesel engines withe the steam engine? In case steam engine breaks down. Union pacific does this too with their excursion steamers...why????
cowbells4u usually the diesels are for insurance purpouses, but the main reason is for dynamic braking. So the stemm engine and train stop faster and easier
In the beginning, thats NOT how 3751 was ran under ATSF it was measely for show or either a bad crew.. this a God awful whistle too.. Very Nice well put together video you got here.....
Beautiful engine, but that whistle is awful. Glad they put something more commanding on her since then. What became of those 2 warbonnet diesels? They added a touch of class, if any dismals were needed at all (doubtful). Nice for the dynamics on the downgrade, tho.
@ConrailJon actually both the FP45's from this video are preserved. 95 is at a railroad museum at the Amtrak station in Barstow, CA and 97 is at a museum in Dallas, Texas.
@EssChee The warbonnet diesels are both FP45s and were probably the most sawed after diesels on the Santa Fe since they owned 9 of them (8 at this point since 1 was wrecked and retired in the early 80s). A few of them were preserved and i think it included both of the diesels on the run.
Retainers are a valve which is on every railcar which, when turned to certain positions, slowly releases the air pressure inside the brake cylinder, giving the locomotive a chance to pump back up the train. On long downhill grades, the trains would stop every 10 miles to let the brakes cool.
Some railroads did equip their steam locomotives with a device that created back-pressure in the cylinders. This is hard on the locomotive's running gear and was not widely used.
I know! I didn't see him until now. He's trying to ruin the moment! Oh well, as long as he didn't get run over, everything is still cool. Awesome video!
I was 4 years old to the day when this was filmed. I love the 51'

GREAT news, of course, especially if 3751 can haul this consist (equivalent of 22 cars). both 2921 and 5021 should be able to do 30 or so

Before diesel engines, witheir dynamic braking, how did a steam locomotive descend grades without picking up too much speed?
robertgift 3 years ago
Air Brakes. For longer sustained grades they'd set retainers.
Steam2k 3 years ago
What are retainers?
Somehow creating back presssure in the cylinders?
Were the diesels providing any tractive effort?
Thank you.

The diesels ruin the moment, but still better than no steam at all.
