Here's my take on Stella falling for Carla. With Stella's feelings for Charlie, she loved that Charlie wasn't her boss, a slight control freak, spontaneous, and care free. B/c Stella saw Carla mostly in a boss role, she (even though she was attracted to her) couldn't see herself with Carla. But Charlie was those things as well, as Stella's power equal. You got to remember Stella is still kinda new, Charlie was her 1st good female friend. I think Stella had a crush and admiration for Charlie

Then when she couldn't be with Charlie, the truth about her feelings for Carla came to the forefront. Stella was hurt that she couldn't be with Charlie, but since it was a crush, she got over it.

And ironically, it was b/c of Charlie that Carla was finally able to show Stella who she is in a purely friend role. Carla fell in love with Stella b/c of her nuturing, sweet, funny, and indifference to her power.

Finally, Stella saw the "real" Carla, and the veil was lifted, and the love hit her!

My, but you are a downer . . . this isn't bad writing, and not everyone has to experience a "long and winding road" to love. Stella has had mixed feelings about Carla all along (the kiss after their night out would have gone further had Ollie not interrupted). Why not just enjoy the love story, regardless of how long it lasts or how "sudden" you might think it is. We've all been waiting months for this; so it's not so sudden for many fans.
