I was in the US Army in Heidelberg spring Thur fall 1968. I watched the moon landing on a TV in a store window on the Haulpstrass (sp?). Loved it, also the people were nice to me, even though with the Viet Nam war raging. I had a brand new 650 BSA to drive around in. I met my present wife there (a US tourist at the time). In the fall of 1968 I had to return to a USAH because of a Viet war wound opened up. I would love to live there now.

Dann fielen zwar nur vereinzelte Bomben, z.B. am 24.12.1944 beim Karlstor. An dem Tag sah ich so viele Flugzeuge (ca. 1000) auf dem Rückweg von Berlin. Ab und zu liessen sie ihre "Restbomben" fallen. Einen Tag vor der Ankunft der GIs am Karfreitag 1945 wurde die Mühle in Wieblingen getroffen. Die Nazis hatten in der Nähe der Kliniken Flak aufgestellt!
Sehr interessant ... scheint unser Tourguide hat wohl etwas dick aufgetragen bei seiner Story. Die Flaks waren sicherlich auch ein guter Schutz vor Bomben und es sind wohl dennoch welche gefallen.

Bei den Verhandlungen zur kampflosen Uebergabe der Stadt war vereinbart, dass die Brücken nicht zerstört würden. Die SS zerstörte aber alle, sogar die historische Alte Brücke. Beiderlinden zog trotzdem in HD ein, ohne einen Schuss abzufeuern. Ein denkwürdiger Tag für mich damals 12jährigen war der Karfreitag, 30.3.1945. Für uns war an dem Tag der Krieg vorbei!

Pensacola, da ist doch eine große Navy Basis wenn ichs recht weiß. Jedenfalls war da eine Bekannte eine lange Zeit stationiert. Freut mich daß dir das Video gefällt! Auch wenn es wettertechnisch nicht so schön wie erhofft war.

hehe, ja, außer filmen fotografiere ich sehr gern. War nur ohne Digicam die letzte Zeit recht aufgeschmissen (die Oldtimerrallye hatte ich mit Camcorder gemacht und ist besch... zum editieren).

Some really cool pictures here BFD. And so rich with the history, artistry, and craftsmanship of your forefathers. I haven't been back for a visit to my childhood homeland of Denmark (we spent a day in Germany and I had Wiener Schnitzel) since that trip we took when I was about 14-15. But I remember what Europe "feels" like, if that makes sense.

Hey Mike, thanks for your comment. The castle ruin of Heidelberg is from the Middle Age (13th century) ... long time after the Romans ;o) Heidelberg wasn't bombed by the Americans in WWII.
The damage of the castle is the result by Mélac - the general of the French king Ludwig XIV (sunking) ... he is also responsible for the damages of many other castles here in Germany.
I live about 6 miles from the city of Chester, it is full of Roman ruins and still has a Roman wall around the inner part of the City, the sand stone they used looks very simular, it also has lots of Tudor buildings, I will try and take the camera one day to show you.:)
I just read the style of the castle is from the epoch of Romanticsm ... love Wikipedia, you get almost every information ;o) But it also has a mix of Gothic and Renaissance ... well, the castle got extended from epoch to epoch.
