@FutureCommando for my country's pioneers..they set up con wires and OP,lay mines and protect the rear of the coy..this is just a few things i know im sure they do more than this..i wish i can give more info but i only work with them afew times..sorry
@essex12341 your risk of contacts (fire fights) will increase if your role is to seek and engage with the enemy but any trade that leaves the confines of a "safe" camp is at risk of attack.
The infantry are more at risk because they also do more tours of Afghanistan and ALWAYS in the infantry role. The Pioneers have the ability to provide force protection, basic engineering / logistic functions and, as such, can be employed in a wider spectrum.
@csisbw not sure what you mean by "see some action" but don't forget that every cap-badge and unit plays a role in battle and the medics, military police, logistics, signals all have front-line roles up there with the infantry!
The difference is that you can move between different jobs in a non-infantry unit.
My answer would be to ask yourself what you want from a career in the army - not just the next 12 months!?
i dont really understand what the pioneers do a corporal from my platoon whos a pioneer nearly spent half an hour to try to explain it to me but i still dont understand it can somebody help me out please lol
I won't ask who your brother is but if he was one of the lads in my Troop then he did himself very proud... I would have trusted each and every one of my lads with my life.
They are essentially a cross between infantry and engineers.
The official army website says this of the Pioneers:
"Pioneer training includes carpentry and bricklaying, as well as military skills such as preparing defensive positions and handling sensitive stores such as those containing fuel and ammunition.
With their enormous array of skills, Pioneers are one of the most sought after trades in the British Army."
Yeah, sadly the Pioneer website does lack a lot of detail.
Yes the Pioneers are "experts" at field defence and they can also protect/defend/hold the ground after if so required. You will do a specific course for this.
Love the vid nice to see the Royal Pioneer corps getting stuck in, Jack of all trades Master of none, Well done boys .... From an ex 518 Coy pioneer 79-86

It also says they build defences and defend them as well, is this true? Not that much on the website sadly.
