The gargoyles of Disney's Gargoyles turned to stone in daylight. Shadowgate predates Gargoyles, though, so I'm not sure there's any relation, but it is an interesting similarity. There might be a common cause, though I don't know what it might be.

True story: As a kid, my family picked up this game for the NES when it was released. My mom sat down and beat the game in one playthrough in 45 minutes. She died a total of two times. My entire family watched in awe as she tore through the game and made it look easy. The fact that she could conform to Shadowgate logic so quickly says a lot about how strange she is.

If you look in the sphinx room there are symbols on the stairs representing how you have to move the levers.

Not the torches, on the staircase. In the sphinxes room there are four discretely hidden symbols hidden there that show you the order. It's hard to see when you first enter the room because the design looks like bricks.
