Yes they did actually. Apparently the EMA director had to do some digging around to find the answer. Purdue's sirens are the only sirens that run on the county's "old system of activation", whatever that is. The guy who ran the test had never activated the sirens by way of the new system before and when he attempted to and was unsuccessful, he reverted to the old system and only Purdue's sirens sounded. So the problem was with the training and not the technology.
Hopefully that does not happen during a real emergency. I find it interesting as to why the Purdue sirens are not on the newer system of activation. It would make more sense to have all the sirens on the same activation system. And it's good that they responded to you in a timely fashion. Again, great recording!
Purdue's system, I'd say, Is likely much older than the newer county system. Lafayette annexed a bunch of the surrounding towns' sirens when TEMA came around. Also, because Purdue can operate their sirens independently of the county, a system-wide upgrade (on Purdue's end of things) might have to happen before they can be merged onto the county one. Notice that Purdue's sirens are always last to wind up...
you are hearing correctly. there is a video of this siren that someone else recorded here on youtube: watch?v=ibHWK-AFHbU. there is discussion in the comments section regarding what may be wrong with it. I personally like the sound of it. the low tone carries far as you can hear in another one of my recordings that was shot from 3 miles away: watch?v=fxYVpO54Bh4
I'm sorry to hear that. My camera is pretty old and it's been through a lot. I stood out in the pouring rain with it to film a funnel cloud and it still works.
at 1:09 you can hear that the sirens are loosing their strength

Nice sound. The harmony when they start is really cool. Add some chorus and pitch-shifting, and you have a great indie background sound to layer on.

Has the county EMA gotten back to you yet as to why the rest of the county system was not functioning? Awesome recording by the way!

If I'm hearing everything correctly, It sounds to me as if the STH-10 is *awfully* low-pitched, almost like a Screamer or Federal 2 HP.
