@321boileranimal Ironically, Nuclear fusion power, the nuclear energy source that I am most interested in, has not nuclear waste. It's completely different than fission. There is no waste that must be housed while it decays, there's just theoretical nearly limitless energy since we have theoretically nearly limitless fuel. It's the same reaction that takes place in our sun. Check it out, I encourage you to research it.
@AwesomeIvory No, I don't. A year ago I let a friend stay over and use my computer. He used it to troll many videos, including yours. I get reminders of this by offended parties all the time. I find it aggravating, and am constantly horrified to learn how many videos he managed to troll during the six hours he was allowed near my computer. Never again. I don't even understand the McDonalds thing he posted, and yet there it is. Gaaaaah.
I stand by my original comment, there is simply too much politics at work in the US for Nuclear Energy to play a major role. It is not going to happen here. Sorry.
Check the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics web page and see for yourself.
There are only 16,000 NE's employed in the US and the projected growth is lower for Nuclear Engineering than it is for 8 other engineering disciplines: most of which have a much larger current labor force.
@halocrate lol there is a growing need for nuclear engineers, thats why the only job in the navy thats needed is SEALs and Nuclear engineering, im a nuke and getting my degree thru MIT, Bill Gates even stated in a conference at MIT that nuclear power is the most cost effective and power providing energy source. lol nuclear energy is a growing field.
@Duckygangsta92 The field has been over-hyped by the media and now NE programs have swelled resulting in job shortage. In reality it is 2-3 graduates per job. Remember that most engineers working in the nuclear industry are not nukes, I would think carefully before selecting this major because there isn't anything else you can do with it. You may want to consider an engineering degree in a discipline with wider job options. Check the BLS web page I mentioned.
@Duckygangsta92 It was also a very misleading statement by B Gates, if this software man in fact said it. Nuclear is only competitive when plant construction costs are subsidized by the government. Utilities can't afford to build plants without government funding. So far only a couple new plants have received funding through the Energy Policy Act of 2005. More may get funding in the future, but keep in mind that it takes many years to build a plant.
@halocrate Nuclear Energy is one of the most demanded engineering jobs. I am currently a junior in a Nuclear Engineering program, and this field is far from dead.
all the people working there are working due to regulations and rules for the dose they are exposed to and it is with permissible limits that don't harm them
UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO IT HAS A FULL SCALE NUCLEAR FACILLITY.
it has a full scale fuel prep center, fuel usage and disposal, Medical applications, plant operations and maintanance AND UI IS PIONEERING THE NEWEST NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS for civilian usage and new navy power plants, and for NASA UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO IS TO ONLY WAY TO GO FOR nuclear, becuase its mainly a science facillity school.
MIT IS OK BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE FULL FACILITIES to get hands on. its all on tiny scales.
U Michigan. I went to University of Illinois and there is not a (working) reactor there (fuel got taken out years back). Make sure you get into a school with a reactor or else you will just be reading what you should be experiencing.
@VolaveruntMercadal I'd say Purdue University in Northern Indiana. That's just my opinion, but I plan on going there. They have a reactor and are rated very highly on the national charts.

Anyone know what is the grade average to become a nuclear engineer in high school? Thanks
shadow9Ox 2 years ago
Kansas State University's reactor is actually student run, with only one full time staff, and the rest undergraduate students.

"2-3 job offers per graduate" - nonsense
You'll be lucky to get even one. Nuclear energy is DEAD in the U.S. Maybe you'll get a job if you speak Japanese, Chinese..........or Farsi.
If you want a job become an Electrical Engineer.

you get more radiation flying from new york to los angeles than you would working in a nuclear power plant for a month.

The only Risk is not to be high trained that u don't do all the right precautions , safety and Radiation protection while you are working .
and if u considered this every thing will be just fine and with benefits
