I used to live in a medium class area, near Favela Of Boréu (one of 800 favelas of Rio), and was crazy, sometimes I was afraid of LOST BULLETS, u known, but I survided. Two Blocks away I had the Beach, and then was a different story, way better and calm. That's Rio. It is worth the visit.
