What really ruined the film for me was the fact it wasn't in German language and the actors weren't German which I couldn't understand why they didn't use German actors. Only one of the actors in the film was German and that was Thomas Kretschmann. I think they should remake the film but this time with German actors just like in Downfall and Sophie Scholl.

The movie didn't do it in the most accurate sense. But it was an eye opener.

I saw this movie because I love and respect Bryan Singer - talented director. "Valkyrie" was ok but I didn't feel the atmosphere of that period in our history. "Enemy at the Gates" (2001) and "Black Book" (2006) were much better films. I actually enjoyed Tom Cruise's performance but he did not take the lead as strongly as he should have. His non-German accent was not an issue it was the strength that he displayed in his performance that was disappointing to many. The supporting cast was superb
Tom Cruise acctually is very similar to a man he was acting... Hm... interesting. And I feel so much irony that a man who was acting nazi party lyder was british, when at true WW2 britain was biggest nazi enemy (before Hitler thought to destroy SSRS)
That thing he said about tension being gone also applies to Hurt Locker. I mean, the main character, who we know is not going to die, is one of only two people in the movie that actually disarms bombs. Like I said, no tension.
2 things that threw me off this movie: the accencts and the smoking. NO ONE in the whole movie sounded remotely German. And just about every Nazi that was on screen pulled out a cigarette and lit up. Nazi Germany was ahead of the world in anti-smoking laws, and anyone in the same area as Hitler couldn't even have one cigarette on them.

HAhah, it was funny how they said Cruise and Brannagh couldn't act very well, and right after that they show the preview clip where Brannagh says "we have to ACT, now.." =D
Especially Brannagh was a big let down in this movie. For me as a German it was awkward to hear all this accents. It is like a movie about the American civil war with soldiers speaking German. We had enough good Stauffenberg movies here in Germany made during the last decades - there was obviously no need for an American version of our history. But the movie is not bad I guess and a lecture for all those who did not know about Stauffenberg and his comrades.
Can't believe it's directed by Brian Singer and written by Christopher McQuarrie. They did The Usual Suspects which has a better script and won an Oscar for that.
i gotta disagree. Its like Titanic where you know how its gonna end but the interesting stuff comes from how it falls apart. Plus, Tom Cruise did speak very good german at the very beginning which fades into english. What more transition do you need?

It wouldn't have killed Mr. Scientology to polish things up with an accent though...you'd think he would at least TRY, the way Keanu did in "Dracula," which is a horror story in and of itself. Ehh, I still think he's the best Lestat though.

Fromm was important but with so many impediments they had to stick to the plan and risk. also is a real fact that Stauffenberg didn't used the second explosive. this amount could killed Hitler instantly.

Will you Americans get over this "British Accent" thing. There is no such thing as a "British Accent". There is an English Accent, a Scottish Accent, A Welsh Accent, etc. There is no such thing as a "British Accent", it does not exist.

Cause i mean think about it, what if they had all dug around and waited till they found more people to participate in the assassination, then the people behind the 42 failed assassination attempts could have gotten together to make one successful assassination.
I really don't see why characters that are speaking English should fake German accents anyway..if they aren't speaking German then why fake an accent , who cares..it was refreshing that they didn't do that , as for the movie overall good not great ..interesting enough..point missed is that this wasn't just another attempt on his life..they had a total PLAN to take over the whole COUNTRY once he was out of the way, and surrender THAT'S what it's about !!
I honestly found this film intriguing, because the build up of tension was quite good. It was not action packed and stuck to the plot, unlike many new movies today.
They weren't stormtroopers lol! I actually did feel a lot of suspense during this movie. Even though I new Hitler wouldn't die, I didin't "know how it would end" as you say. I was intrigued to how, or if, they were going to escape. It was definitely worth my time and money at the movies.

Yeah, while Bryan Singer makes good movies, he really doesn't know how to direct actors very well. Just look at the first X-men movie- everyone is just so dull in that film. I still really enjoyed this movie a lot- and I'd give it full price.
God, you guys are really stupid.... Stauffenberg could not blow himself up with Hitler because he was in a high military position that was vital for the success of the whole Operation Valkyrie. Or to make it easier for you to understand: No Stauffenberg, no Valkyrie. And there had been some assassination attempts before where German officers really tried to do such a suicide bombing, but Hitler was always saved by coincidence. So read a history book or shut the fuck up.
im just throwing this out there... if stauffenberg would've stayed by Hitler with the bomb and blown himself up, the Valkyrie plan would've succeeded so they wouldn't really need him anymore...
These reviews I usually agree with and enjoy alot, but this is the first one I really disagree with. I thought it was a great movie. Thought it may not be better than sex, I would say it's worth Full Price. I mean, you know their mission was doomed to fail, as history shows, but as the movie escalated in the back of your mind you're just thinking; "Man, I wish they killed Hilter. In the beginning Cruise is speaking German, and it segways into his normal voice, implying they are all speaking German, and it is being translated for us.
This movie wasn't as good as i thought... but toward the end the suspense was there a lot imo. And I enjoyed kenneth branagh's and bill nighy's performances. I even thought Cruise did well! But I was bored a lot more than expected...
I love these guys review but they really need to know there facts here, they stated that this was one of 15 times they try to kill hitler, the reason why they are made this is because it was the most successful operation to kill hitler.
Definitely full price. True the accent thing is a little distracting but the acting and the story is engaging. I know of the actual event and this film really sticks close to the facts. This a side of the story that we don't see much of in films. Usually Germans are portrayed as the villains. This movie shows that they were human beings. The directing is strong too. It's amazing how interesting Singer can make the quiet moments. He does great with building tension.

Close to all of those assasination attempts happened near the end of the war, so the Jew killing was just fine, when things were looking well I guess. But that's what Nazis are, cowards and oportunists at best.

For one thing ye this was based off a real attempt on Hitler's life, but you kind of ignore the more intricate plot details as to how they planned the Que/Rebellion against Hitler at the time.
And also being bombed doesn't turn you in to a pirate he lost an eye and got a hook, artificial limbs weren't great in 1940s or so.
Finally Tom Cruise WAS good, you should give him more credit.
This was a boring movie the only part that was suspenseful was when cruise was trying to get the bomb in the bag with his one hand and couldnt do it and i agree with cyrus if this was on the history channel i'd watch it its a rental my friends

This one - I thought was a bit harsh. Obviously we knew the outcome, but I don't think that the tension suffered too much. There was a lot of sympathy created for the characters, because of it. Because we knew they were going to fail - I felt it was a slight 'shout at the screen' type movie.
I will give you that the accents were a bit weird. But thank you for not saying that they should have been German!
there were actually 42 or 43 assassination attempts. and those are just the documented ones according to the history channel special. one nazi officer actually did try to become a suicide bomber, which was a completely foreign concept to them so it was a big deal. I forget how it didn't work I think the targets left so he deactivated his bomb.
It isn't the best WWII film though I'll admit. I'd say Saving Private Ryan and Letters From Iwo Jima were the best. Or that one film from Germany about the girl making newspapers about the war. I forget the name of that. One thing I noticed tooo though: THere were like 3-4 guys from Pirates in this film!
It was fun. A little too much like Mission Impossible. But it was pretty good. I liked Defiance more though. I'm not sure why they released those two films so close to each other, but both were interesting.

Today we can find info on whats really going on in the war and what they are doing. But back then they had no idea.
The Germans weren't stupid! They were some of the most cultured nations in the world at the turn of the century, so of course they *knew* that jews and non-whites probably weren't all bad, but they were willing to go along with it for the most part (so, yes, not all of them) because they were unhappy, their country had been reduced from former greatness and needed something to put their faith in. For them it was Nazism, but it was Communism and Facism in other similarly defeated countries.

I really don't see why characters that are speaking English should fake German accents anyway..if they aren't speaking German then why fake an accent , who cares..it was refreshing that they didn't do that , as for the movie overall good not great ..interesting enough..point missed is that this wasn't just another attempt on his life..they had a total PLAN to take over the whole COUNTRY once he was out of the way, and surrender THAT'S what it's about !!

I honestly found this film intriguing, because the build up of tension was quite good. It was not action packed and stuck to the plot, unlike many new movies today.

They weren't stormtroopers lol! I actually did feel a lot of suspense during this movie. Even though I new Hitler wouldn't die, I didin't "know how it would end" as you say. I was intrigued to how, or if, they were going to escape. It was definitely worth my time and money at the movies.

Yeah, while Bryan Singer makes good movies, he really doesn't know how to direct actors very well. Just look at the first X-men movie- everyone is just so dull in that film. I still really enjoyed this movie a lot- and I'd give it full price.

I said earlier in this video about how I reckon this one of few movies Tom Cruise is half decent.
I still stand by it after getting the DVD and seeing a pic of Stauffenberg in the documentary.
They tried to be as accurate as possible and I like it for what it is.
It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. movie, it didn't DESERVE rental rating.
I would've given it a matinee.

God, you guys are really stupid.... Stauffenberg could not blow himself up with Hitler because he was in a high military position that was vital for the success of the whole Operation Valkyrie. Or to make it easier for you to understand: No Stauffenberg, no Valkyrie. And there had been some assassination attempts before where German officers really tried to do such a suicide bombing, but Hitler was always saved by coincidence. So read a history book or shut the fuck up.

These reviews I usually agree with and enjoy alot, but this is the first one I really disagree with. I thought it was a great movie. Thought it may not be better than sex, I would say it's worth Full Price. I mean, you know their mission was doomed to fail, as history shows, but as the movie escalated in the back of your mind you're just thinking; "Man, I wish they killed Hilter. They have too, their plan is flawless. Stupid history!" Then we get the sad truth of it all. Oh well, your opinions.

Definitely full price. True the accent thing is a little distracting but the acting and the story is engaging. I know of the actual event and this film really sticks close to the facts. This a side of the story that we don't see much of in films. Usually Germans are portrayed as the villains. This movie shows that they were human beings. The directing is strong too. It's amazing how interesting Singer can make the quiet moments. He does great with building tension.

The details about the main characters was interesting but would be better if shown on the history channel. For one thing ye this was based off a real attempt on Hitler's life, but you kind of ignore the more intricate plot details as to how they planned the Que/Rebellion against Hitler at the time.
And also being bombed doesn't turn you in to a pirate he lost an eye and got a hook, artificial limbs weren't great in 1940s or so.
Finally Tom Cruise WAS good, you should give him more credit.
Other critics did actually.

I love spill! Think that you guys get it right almost all of the time.
This one - I thought was a bit harsh. Obviously we knew the outcome, but I don't think that the tension suffered too much. There was a lot of sympathy created for the characters, because of it. Because we knew they were going to fail - I felt it was a slight 'shout at the screen' type movie.
I will give you that the accents were a bit weird. But thank you for not saying that they should have been German!

there were actually 42 or 43 assassination attempts. and those are just the documented ones according to the history channel special. one nazi officer actually did try to become a suicide bomber, which was a completely foreign concept to them so it was a big deal. I forget how it didn't work I think the targets left so he deactivated his bomb.

Yes, but you also got to look at what I was like back then. There was no internet, so propaganda really worked back then. As far as alot of the german people knew, Hitler was right, and that Jews and other non-white people were evil and causes of all their problems. Today we can find info on whats really going on in the war and what they are doing. But back then they had no idea.

The Germans weren't stupid! They were some of the most cultured nations in the world at the turn of the century, so of course they *knew* that jews and non-whites probably weren't all bad, but they were willing to go along with it for the most part (so, yes, not all of them) because they were unhappy, their country had been reduced from former greatness and needed something to put their faith in. For them it was Nazism, but it was Communism and Facism in other similarly defeated countries.
