honestly seeing that there was a pile of other chips at the end kind of ruined it, it would have been just as impacting, if not more so, if that had been the only one he ever met. and you would assume from the reaction he had when he saw his friend die, that it would not have been a common experience for him, as we now know it was from seeing the end.

Sad, yes. But here is an ending that goes onto the end of this and makes it a happy ending that I thought of. There is a thunderstorm and the "dead" robot is struck by a bolt of lightning that reboots its system. The alien notices it says "Please insert disk" and goes on the long journey to the pile of disks and comes back with it. It puts it in the drone and then they "live happily ever after."

That was not as sad as I expected. I don't know if I'm over thinking it, but he only knew the spaceman for a little while. And he's been living alone on that planet for probably his whole life, so the death of the spaceman probably wasn't that bad for him. Bad, but not like someone he knew his whole life died slowly from a terminal illness. Plus, the spaceman died happy. Whatever. It was pretty well animated.

It doesn't matter that he only knew the spaceman for one day. The point is that he finally had someone there to be with and keep him company, a friend. And just like that the happiness was taken away from him. :( And judging by the amount of chips that the robots left behind when they died, he has probably been let down like that many times before.

I feel as though you're meant to make up how you think the animal would feel. My ... imagining of his pain would be "God, I'm so tired of having no one. And this is like the one millionth time this would happen", and a complete break for him emotionally. Or, you could imagine that the animal is very naive, expecting his new friend to last. But he only realizes at the end that the spaceman is just like the rest. You're thinking is too closed off and perfectly logical not emotional.
