Brilliant! I never understood why Dave Edmunds gave up doing great guitar solos once Love Sculpture broke up, instead focusing on much more mundane stuff like I Hear You Knocking. I guess he just got lazy quickly.
UNDERRATED?That ain,t the word.I was introduced to this track by my dad(Ray Phillips/Ex BUDGIE Drummer)at about 8 years of age.And it has allways been my goal as a guitarist to master this song on guitar. For the main part(At 38 years old now)I,ve cracked it but.......I have never managed to nail the solo with the attitude Mr Edmunds has got and in my eyes thats what puts him at the top of my list for best guitarist in the world. You can keep your Vai,s and Satriani,s.Dave and a boss pedal ROCK!
hawkmoon, i see your point, but Sabre takes it for me, by a nose as they say in horse racing.
I was 15 when it came out, on Peel's Top Gear, and he played it twice. Then it was a hit single. Not that long after the Nice did "America" so as a classical cross over it was in good company.
@thewordofgord I remember that Peel session too. It was such an incredible sound and he played it again at the very end of the program. Hadn't heard him do that before. Rondo by The Nice was even more classical crossover, fabulous live at the Marquee.
You say the day is kind of dragging and things at the office are moving in slow motion and the girl in the next cubicle is in a coma and your boss is getting ready to conduct a meeting about next month's sales goals....THEN PUT THIS BAD BOY ON YOUR LAP TOP, CRANK IT UP TO ELEVEN AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!!
Wow! Dave Edmunds was doing neoclassical guitar shit long before it became fashionable, paving the way for folks Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and many others...
@groundhog713 Dave was quite a pioneer in many ways. Although, Jeff Beck was doing Bolero about the same time and peter Green did something similar with Oh Well. Then there were the Beatles, Moody Blues and ELP who were also connecting classical with rock. But check out Dave's live performance of Saber Dance here on YouTube...the one he performed in Seville, Spain. Incredible.
Wow! I was impressed enough when I heard "In The Land Of The Few" on the "Nuggets II" box set. Didn't know Dave Edmunds was such a guitar hero. I mean I knew he was good but this here is really ahead of it's time. He was taking on that shredding style before it was in fashion.
Astonishing competence. Flawless technique. Fabulous improvisation... I once saw Love Sculpture in 1970 in a small seaside ballroom. Dave Edmunds broke a string during Sabre Dance and barely missed a beat. Despite that brilliance, and as a guitarist myself who uses Farandole as a warm-up piece, I have to rate this as his best solo ever. Matchless!
...Opened for James Gang in '69 at the Grande Ballroom...; he & Joe Walsh played off each other for about 20 min. throwin' licks back & forth...Absolutely awesome; they were both about 23 then...I was 17... kids today have no idea what they missed in the 60's.
You lucky bastard. To have seen these two classic bands at their peak in 69 at the historic Grande Ballroom...Wow. Was only 8 years old then but have good memories of my parents coming home from the department store with classic heavy rock lp's Cream, Stones, Zep, Cocker, Steppenwolf, Winter etc. I'll gladly live in the past with this great music.
My radio station in Detroit played this; WABX. Long gone now. Anybody remember Uncle Russ? Anyway, Edmunds a VERY underated guitarist. This album came out in Hendrix's heyday, and consequently went overlooked for the most part. I don't think there was any album I listened to more than this... at the time....
This melted my face off!

Dave Edmunds is one of the most underrated guitar heroes ever. I believe I read somewhere Hendrix was a fan. I believe it.
