  • I enjoyed this video very much. Thanks for posting!

  • People had class back then...dressed to the nines to go on a trip,no baggy pants or sideways baseball caps in those days!!

  • @cumbco That crowd were dressed up all the time, even at the beach! Their offspring, my parents and us kids were like that up until the late 60s, with the exception of dressing up to go to the beach!

  • Great video, what a nice view into past times....I love Sandy Cove.

In fact we did a feature on Brier Island very close to were a lot of this was filmed.

  • Thank 'lipwak' for sharing a really interesting video. What a beautiful coastline, compared to these days. Pity the 'developers' cannot go inland and build their ugly architectural disasters, and leave the beautiful coastline unmarred for people to enjoy.

  • love nova SCOTIA

  • awesome footage, A+++++

  • @canadahistory Thanks!

  • Awesome!! I just visited Digby area for the first time this summer. Visited Sandy Cove. Thank you for sharing.

  • I'm from Nova Scotia and this is awesome to get a glimpse of what my area looked like in 1937. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thats grand! I live in NYC on the seaport now but I lived on the east coast of Canada for the last 5 years. I miss it all the time. Thanks.

  • I think that lifeguard was John McCain.

Thank you for the video. I am putting it on my Facebook page, for auld times' sake, and posterity, and novelty factor.

The film was a dynamic postcard of their trip, and a snapshot to a bygone era. me likee. thanks again, and kudos to the G-parent's.

  • Thank you. Glad you liked it. Where is the lifeguard you mention?

    Cheers,

    John L

  • oh it was pure "ageist" joke on McCain. I saw a pool but no lifeguard. :)

  • thanks for the old film. heck, even my dad weren't born yet.

  • what a great video! thanks for sharing!!

  • Omg i work at the pines xD i see the pool hasnt changed, it has the same walls and everything!

  • Very enjoyable...thanks for sharing.

  • from blairkm

I think your family video is actually arriving in Digby Basin from Saint John and then ending with the Saint John harbour, not Yarmouth , perhaps I'm wrong but it looks like Saint John, Partridge Island etc , Could I be right about this , I have done this trip countless times and have so many photos to compare .

Really enjoyed this , thanks for posting it .

  • The scene just before the Pines Hotel is from Digby and what today would be near Sydney St and 3rd Ave. Before the Pines golf course opened, there was a 9 hole course in that part of town.

  • Oh hell I never even thought about that too. Sandy Cove is in Digby Co. That has to be the Pines!

  • Great. I love knowing more about these scenes!

  • I think that the some of this was taken in Digby, Nova Scotia as well because the resort they are at resembles the Pines Hotel.

I've read about how popular it was for people in the US to travel by boat to Yarmouth, and then take the train down to Digby to stay at the Pines. Babe Ruth started coming over after his retierment to fish in a well known (although not to me) Yarmouth area, and to golf at the Pines golf course. They've still got his score cards at the pro shop I believe.

  • ya it does look alot like yarmouth nova scotia and i think they were in our harbour

  • (From a note to me by Dave in Yarmouth)

The small island like lighthouse is called the Bug Light and is on the eastern side of the entrance to Yarmouth NS harbour. A lot of the scenery looks familiar to me but I can only guess.I am curious about the person being carried aboard ship but I guess that story has been lost through time. This vid was shot well before my time but nice to see. Dave in Yarmouth.

  • I don't know where Bunkers Island is in the footage or the Yarmouth Bar. Can you point out when they happen in the time?

    Thanks.

I don't know about the person being carried. It could be they were fooling around. They did alot of that but it could be that the woman was really paralyzed. We may never know.

  • Thanks for puttig this on.Some of it looks familiar. The Bug Light and bunkers island for sure and maybe the Yarmouth Bar

  • Where are all those? I'd love to know where any of these scenes are. Thanks!

  • Which town?

  • man ,almost 80 years and this town still looks the same lol meh it aint so bad lol
