Oh, I remember blowing into the cartridges! And into the NES itself! And the spit (which I was never comfortable with). Now if only I could get my copy of 'WALL-E' (special edition) to work. They do something to DVDs nowadays that makes them not work right.
I've heard of blowing on the cartridges, but using your tongue? Come on GameJew, that's so unsanitary!
I heard that you can also push the cartridge a little to the side (I forget which side?) after it's pressed down and it will work. But the best thing to do is either replace the 72-pin connector or buy the remodeled NES. That one is so much better than the original model because Nintendo fixed a lot of problems in the remodeled NES that the original had. It never gave me trouble.
Wow! Thats great! Thanks Gayjew. ...... Wait, its Gayjew right? .... Oh, sorry, I mean GameJew. Well, you can understand why I might have made that mistake.
OMFG...the ol' cartridge tricks! so many memories of playing old cartridge systems, put it in, it doesn't work, blow a little and still doesn't work. then my friend takes it and blows harder and it doesn't work...then suddenly we lock eyes in a stare that says... "you're on..." and we have a contest to see who can get it to work first. and yes NEVER give up!
OMG I DO THAT TOO!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!! I had to do that with my grandma's... it crunches every time haha and works. WOW, and I thought I was... :( original.
Anyway, the key is to make sure the connectors are, well, connecting. Blowing helps get dust off, and everything else is just making sure the connectors on the cartridge touch the connectors in the NES itself. I've found wiggling the cartridge in the NES helps.
Hey there GameJew. As much as I love the idea of finally being able to communicate directly to you, I don't think it's such a great idea to make an account with a shared password. Someone might change it, and that wouldn't be good.
Sorry for double commenting Gamejew, but when I was a wee gaming lad the reason we blew into out carts was to remove any dust that may have gotten into it. Of course, you never questioned these things when you were young ^_^ But yeah, we also used to play into the console themselves, like with a Megadrive or a SNES where you just push down the flap thing.
(Youtube doesn't allow more than 500 characters at a time, and I have a lot to say ^0^) But yeah that's the reason why we did it. But there's one more thing. One unwritten rule of blowing into carts as a kid was to NEVER allow any sort of water vapour come from your mouth into the cart. As we were under the impression (probably from too many cartoons) that even the slightest bit of water could completely frazzle anything electronic. And I as horrified for a moment to see you doing it.
Now, is that really safe? if you say so, then I'll have to try it, I currently have a Super Metroid cart that I'm having trouble with.
And by the way, Ask GameJew is a lovely idea that i'm really excited about too! And I do have a "problem" with Super Metroid that I'd like to ask you, but my camera is currently on the fritz at the moment, so we'll see ^_^
VHS > DVD.
DVDs are always so unreliable compared to g0od ol' tapes.

Licking the cartridge could help the contacts conduct better. So it might actually help. Great new segment.
My question, Game Jew, is where did you get that outfit?
