A perfect example of what the unquenchable fire means is revealed in 1 King 18:33-38 where they poured tons of water over the altar of the sacrifice which was to be burned, and the fire "licked up" the water. No amount of water can put it out, while it burns. However, it will not burn forever.
Thank you for your work Gerry. My family and I are reading your book now. We have believed as you for years and it seems like the Internet is booming with those opening their eyes to God's truths. :)
Since youtube changed its format, all your scripture references are cut off at the bottom of the screen. Is there anything you can do on your end to reframe the video so the scriptures are visible again? By the way, I have your book on Kindle, and it's amazing. Bell's book is so vague hypothetical. Yours is meticulously based in scripture and research. The evidence you present is overwhelming. But more overwhelming is that so many still believe in a "loving" God who tortures billions eternally.
Hebrews 9:27-28: "Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him."
From this we understand:
1) We die once. We are judged once.
2) Christ brings salvation for those who are waiting for him...only those who are waiting for him.
3) Judgment is not correction, but a concluding ultimate verdict.
@darkhorserunner The scripture does not say "only." "When your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness." Isa 26:13 "Oh Lord, you have appointed them for judgment...you have marked them for correction." Hab 1:12. He refines us as silver, lays affliction on our backs. We go through fire, but He brings us to "rich fulfillment!" See Ps 66:10-12 Read Hope Beyond Hell for a comprehensive view of what judgment is. Not enough space here to adequately make my case.
There are principles about God’s judgment that Heb 9 does not address but is clear in other texts. See Is 26:9; Hab 1:12, Ps 66:10-12, Ro 11:33, Ja 2:13… etc. Yes, salvation comes to those awaiting Him in this age, but how can you conclude it won't await those awaiting Him in the next in judgment? Heb 9 does not state “only.” Judgment is “until” the last cent is paid. Mt 5:26. For much more evidence, read Hope Beyond Hell free online. May God open our eyes to His truth.
Torment is from basanizo also translated tossed toiling pained vexed in KJV. Fire is 1 of numerous metaphors in Rev and not eternal. Everyone will be purified with fire (Mk9:49GNT) Jesus said we won't get out of [Gehenna] prison "until" the last cent is paid Mt5:26 Rev 20 shows it's according to works. Judgment is eye for eye tooth for tooth -always measured (Mt 5:38,7:2) not infinite. Brimestone is sulfur - purifying agent. See Hope Beyond Hell ch1 & App V #1. God is not a monster.
Rev 14:9 And a third angel followed them, saying with a great voice, If anyone worships the beast and its image, and receives a mark in his forehead or in his hand,
Rev 14:10 he also will drink of the wine of the anger of God, having been mixed undiluted in the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented by fire and brimstone before the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.
“Eternal” life is defined 3 ways -as knowing God, as Christ, and as Father's command. (Jn 17:3; 1Jn 5:20; Jn. 12:50) None of these concern duration but a quality of essence. The knee jerk reaction that unless eternal punish in Mt 25 is forever neither is eternal life, does not apply. Their durations are not related. Jude 7 does not mean “eternal”. See “Terms for Eternity” by David Konstan. For more on “eternal” see Hope Beyond Hell Amazon E book $1
Sorry to post another message. But this contains a correct to a mistake I made in my previous message. I didn't mean αἰών in the beginning. I meant αίὠνιος.
In Jude 7, αἰών is used in the same sense as in numerous other passages. The lexicon BDAG gives the meaning "pertaining to a period of unending duration." Matthew 25:46 "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Here, the same word (αἰώνιον) is used to describe both punishment and life. They're used in the exact same sense in order to draw a contrast. If you say that punishment is not eternal in this verse, then you cannot say life is eternal.
@hopebeyondhell I'd very much like to believe what you believe, but I'm having some trouble. Maybe you know things that can help Biblically support this all. What about the fire in Revelation that the Devil is thrown into? Is that a good fire as well? And what about those who are thrown in with him to be tormented day and night forever and ever?
@thechrisiacovetti The Greek of "forever and ever" is literally "into the ages of the ages" and is referring to what will take place in the consummation ages of all time. Jesus said the judgment prison was "until" the last penny is paid in Mt 5:26 and that judgment is "measured" in Mt 7:2. "Until" and "measured" do not support a "forever" judgment. Neither does the justice of God. For much more Biblical evidence for this read "Hope Beyond Hell" - Amaz E book Kindle $1 or hopebeyondhelldotnet
Please restrict questions to one text at a time and no more than one in a day. It is extremely difficult to explain even one seemingly contradictory passage in only 500 characters. I must disallow questions which I cannot adequately answer in this limited space. Please understand it is not because I am avoiding any questions. Most questions I get are dealt with in "Hope Beyond Hell" which can be read free on my website of the same name. May God lead us into all truth.
I appreciate your question. To best answer, I refer you chapter five of my book: Hope Beyond Hell which talks about the purpose of predestination. You will find it has nothing to do with escape from everlasting suffering, but instead to receiving glory in God's kingdom in a position of honor and great responsibility. It is sad that the doctrine of eternal hell causes us to misunderstand so much of the Scriptures. See Mt 15:6 and Mt 6:22-23.
Romans 8:30 Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.
Romans 8:33 Who could bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who justifies.
God graciously chooses some to rescue from their self-inflicted destruction. "Choosing" carries the concept of others not being chosen. To say that these will eventually be saved is to say either that God's initial plan was too weak, or that he changes. Both are fatal.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, having, in the same way as these, given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.
Saying that everyone will eventually be saved, even out of Hell, renders void and meaningless such biblical concepts as Election (Rom 11:5) and the "Eternal Sin" of blaspheming the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:29).
@DoulosEudoxus Eternal fire is not accurate. YLT= fire age-during. CLT= fire eonian. Rotherham= age-abiding fire. Online Greek Interlinear= FIRE eonian. Diaglott=fire age-lasting. "Eternal” and “age” are opposits. Biblical fire is often a positive thing.God is a consuming fire. Everyone is purified with fire (Mk 9:49 GNT) Election is not from an eternal “hell” but to great privilege in God's Kingdom. The Bible does not teach “eternal” sin. Read Hope Beyond Hell for much more detail on this.
I subscribe to Jesus' own words first and foremost. And pray for understanding and wisdom. Pray that your own words will fall off if they are not in line with Jesus'. I pray everytime I speak it is His truth in love.
“Then they will go forth and look On the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm will not die And their fire will not be quenched; And they will be an abhorrence to all mankind.”
@Freedomremoved This text does not refer to spiritual states of being, but to earthly carcasses. The only reason it is offered in support of endless punishment is because it contains metaphorical references to the worm and unquenched fire traditionally associated with hell. These terms and this phrase are examined in "Hope Beyond Hell" chapter eight and Appendix V #1 and do not prove unending chastisement; only that punishment attains its goal.
Was Paul lying when he wrote: "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. (1Co 1:18). Surely "to them that perish" are those who do not end up in heaven because they reject Jesus and his cross. Everyone who rejects a literal hell is in fact rejecting Jesus because He actually suffered the pangs of hell on the cross to save those who believe on Him.
@lessingtom This passage more accurately refers to those who "are perishing" and who are "being saved" in the present sense. This is a present action and the CLT brings this out. The Gospel cannot be received by those to whom it is not being revealed. But there will come a time when it will, if not in this life, in the age to come. Perishing is the same Greek word for "lost." Everyone is "lost" or "perished" until they are found by Christ. There is no eternal hell. Please read Hope Beyond Hell.
If there is no eternal hell (eternal separation from God) there cannot be an eternal heaven (eternally present with God). How can there be any hope beyond hell when there is no eternal hell? You may as well then say there is despondency beyond heaven.
@lessingtom The fact that there is no eternal hell has no relation to heaven. Hope Beyond Hell is simply a phrase to make the point that God's judgments have meaning and purpose. I can see where you are coming from. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to you.

Gerry, Another great video! Rob Bell is getting the exposure of the spotlight, but you present the case for ultimate reconciliation much better than Love Wins! Keep up the good work! ~Grady
Gerry, I was taught 33 years ago that hell is a myth. I was fortunate to not have a perverted view of God. I pray God all the false Christian teachers understand that they will want forgiven when they find out they are teaching a false doctrine, that they are blaspheming God to say he doesn't forgive. He will even forgive them and they will love Him for it, for love wins.
Thank you for this video. No other theology satisfactory answers all they questions that plagued me most of my life concerning the Gospel of Christ. "Maybe God Isn't Such a Bad Guy After All."
I know it cannot last,...His refiner's fire will purify as driss from silver, like fullers soap we shall be washed, made white as snow.
Just like the edelweise,...small and white clean and bright, you look happy to greet me! Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow,...forever!
Dear Gerry. Wow! Fantastic video! Amazing how much information and solid scripture you manage to cram into 8 minutes... and in such a gentle and humble way! I'll post this on facebook for sure! Thanks again. Blessings from your brother Eric in Norway :)
Thank you so much for this, Gerry. If only people would take the time to confirm and study the scriptures that you have presented, many eyes would be opened. Bless you for studying to show yourself approved. You have done the hard work, it doesn't take long to look up each of the scriptures and see that you speak the Truth.
Your book continues to hold a second place on my shelf. I no longer fear or worry about where I will go when I die. I long to show others the Truth as well.
Wow. I am going to share this with my family and friends. It is so hard to explain that God is willing and able to save every person to people who have been taught the doctrine of eternal punishment. This video does a good job of explaining that God's judgement is remedial and corrective in nature. In the end, everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the GLORY of God.
A perfect example of what the unquenchable fire means is revealed in 1 King 18:33-38 where they poured tons of water over the altar of the sacrifice which was to be burned, and the fire "licked up" the water. No amount of water can put it out, while it burns. However, it will not burn forever.

Am I more "saveable" than someone else? No ! If God can save me, He can save all.

Your book is wonderful. I recommend it on a regular basis. A friend of mine came to know Him through your testimony of the truth in this book.

Blessings always!
