  • is there any way we can see the whole ken burns documentary baseball on youtube?

  • Why are the other Ken Burns docs available on YouTube, but not this one?

  • i <3 satchels! its not a man purse... its a satchel. indiana jones wears one... the hangover!

  • Ole Satchmo.

  • NIce

  • he's a G.O.A.T, no doubt

  • cool. i did a report on him for my project :D

  • Great shot of Wrigley field @ :47

  • One of the greatest of all time.

  • Satchel Paige, is one of the "Greatest pitchers of all time!"

  • thats sucks anybody an other idea

  • Satchel, which has been given as a nickname to Leroy Paige as well as to Louis Armstrong ("Satchmo" is a contraction of "Satchel Mouth") and as a name to Woody Allen's son, is a word from the Middle English, derived from the French, "sachel" and also from Latin "sacellum" which means "bag". When I looked up MY first name in an old dictionary, it said, "Celtic. Of unknown origin."

    Sigh.

  • @gilgamess Armstring got the same Satchmo when a British club owner mis heard Satchel Mouth over the phone and used it on a poster. He was supposed write the by line 'old Satchel mouth himself' but wrote 'old Satchmo himself' Louis liked it and kept it.

  • he got the name as a boy carrying lots of bags for people at the train station for money.

  • To RedTurtleMania:

Satchel worked as a luggage handler and they nicknamed him 'satchel tree', I guess for his height and the luggage he carried. The name stuck.

  • my name is satchel and i want to know what it means anybody an idea?

  • It means "small bag." Cool name btw, mine's generic but I like it like that.

  • what video is this

  • It's an exerpt from Ken Burns' PBS Series, "Baseball"....

  • ¡Fantástico, a favourite of all ages!!!

  • 0:50 "a strong arm with no muscles.."

but i think he got muscles...

  • Maybe, Sandy Koufax can NOT be over looked.

Tiger Woods plays chumps, put Woods in Jack Nicklaus group and Woods would have a much bigger challenge.

Lance Armstrong. Marshall Taylor, you must be high.

This is a tough one, but the only one's I think could match Ali were Jack Johnson and Marciano.

You can have Wilt, I will take Jordan.

More of the same as in you only see Black? Need to wake up.

  • Jordan was a much bigger winner than Chamberlain (who was great nonetheless). Pedro Martinez in his prime is the best starting pitcher I've ever seen and Pujols and Bonds (before steroids) are the best position players I've seen.

My grandfather played briefly in MLB in 1932 and said Lefty Grove was the best pitcher he faced.

  • Bonds (before steroids) was one of the best you've seen?

He was good before roids of course, but have you compared his stats before and after roids?

  • His batting average, home runs and on-base % went way up. His other skills declined (defense and base-stealing).

When I wrote "before steroids," I just meant that he was the best all-around legit player I've ever seen. Of course he was amazing after steroids but lots of players were amazing on steroids. The #s put up from 1999-2007 (or maybe 1999-2004) by Barry Bonds are tainted and, thus, not worthy of consideration IMO.

  • Your account is closed!

    Yippie-ki-yay motherfucker!

  • It's true Paige dominated against many of the white major leauge players in exhibitions,

He also got knocked around by them at times.

Jimmy Foxxx hit a couple of monster homers off him in a game for one small example.

Everyone including Satchel has thier ups and downs.

Satchel was still the best pitcher ever.

Nolan Ryan speed with Greg Maddux smarts and savvy.

Doesn't get much better than that.

  • im smiling because u coulcnt hav put that bettr

  • he was da best pitcher in his day.. he would of dominated the majors if he played in his prime

  • I know Paige was a great pitcher but I want to see the stats that says he had more wins then Cy Young and more Ks then Nolan Ryan.

  • The didnt keep game scores and records back then but he pitched for a long long time. He did win a lot of games and struck out many a batters though. Too bad he didnt play in the Majors.

  • Yeah I mean it's pretty obvious that he was a great pitcher but to say these stats like they are fact is kind of ridiculous when no one has any actual proof

  • Well a lot of baseball historians, Black and White, saw him pitch. And when he pitched against the white major league players, he'd dominate. DiMaggio said that Paige was the greatest pitcher he'd ever faced. That's JOE DiMAGGIO would said that.

  • Like I said I know he had to have been a great pitcher but when Dimaggio faced Paige he hadn't even been called up to the major yet

  • Okay...you obviously don't know much about the history of Major League Baseball. Because of the racist white major league owners didn't want Blacks playing in the majors, they would opt for a

exhibition games sometimes before, during and after the regular baseball season. So, YES: Paige pitched to DiMaggio and all those other great players many times before Jackie Robinson arrived in 1947. Seriously, what do you know? You're like, what? 18? Shut the fuck up and read a book.

  • Trust me I know about the majors asshole I know all about the "they didn't always keep the stats" thing but I hear these numbers that he had 1,000 wins and a trillion Ks how CAN YOU PROVE IT? is all I ask....Because of what people say? Yeah that can't get blown out of proportion quickly.....I'm not trying to start any thing with you or discrediting Paige I just think these numbers shouldn't be thrown out as facts

  • Why not? He pitched for almost 4 decades. 4! And many players who witnessed his skills agreed to what they saw and many historians felt the same way. Riddle me this Batman, if it wasn't true about his skills then why the fuck is he in the Hall of Fame?

  • sigu655. He did pich in the majors.Look it up,

Made his debut when he was over 40 years old,

Didn't pich alot but was still quite effective.

  • Even earned a WS ring as well. What his career numbers could have been if given a chance we'll never know...

  • In 1965, 60 years after Paige's supposed birthday, he took the mound for the last time, throwing three shutout innings for the Kansas City Athletics. Joe DiMaggio called Satchel Paige "the best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced". His pitching was amazing and his showboating was legendary. His career highlights span five decades. Paige compiled such feats as 64 consecutive scoreless innings, a stretch of 21 straight wins, and a 31-4 record in 1933. For 22 years, Paige mauled the competition

  • *patooie

  • was never given a good chance could have been the best pitcher ever

  • Comment removed

  • I wish he were in his prime today so I can see him strikeout A-Rod.

  • and almost every single batter he faced............ even Pujols

  • Great pitcher. Not as good as Ryan, Ford, Koufax, Feller, Gibson...we can keep going, but Paige would have been in the discussion had he been allowed into the majors sooner.

  • He was striking out guys at 47 in MLB! If he would have come up with 42 he would have passed Cy Young!

  • Yes I'm serious! Are you.....because I have no idea what your comment means? "A Paige to the white man"???

  • He would have been better than all of the above if he had the opportunity.

  • The man was 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA as a rookie in 1948 at the age of 42. Feller, himself says we don't win the pennant without Satch. Imagine if that 42 were 22. In my opinion, the best of all time. No disrespect to the greats you named

  • You may want to read about Satchel Paige and then rethink this comment. He was, without a doubt, the greatest pitcher ever.

  • you stupid whit racist bastards caused him from making the mlb sooner

  • Paige won many more games than cy young. the only thing, they didnt always keep stats. BEST PITCHER.......EVER

  • what film is this from? I'd like to watch it

  • whitey ford was better

  • His great grand daughter is my bffl!!!!Jamlea Pagie

  • best pitcher ever.

  • He was a great pitcher in his era....but He wasnt the best ever

Not even top 10 all time

  • he blew away the major leaguers as an old man. if he'd been younger, he'd have more no-hitters than nolan ryan. the best ever.

  • He tore the MLB up as a old man ??? are you just saying this cause he is black, cause if thats the case its sad...

He went 28-31 in the majors, with a 3.29 era, and only 288 strikeouts...

Granted he played in a different era, and spent his prime in the negro leagues and cuba. He was great, but not a nolan ryan...

And its clear that you only brought up nolan ryan cause hes white....Stop the reverse racism

Read facts on a guy before you compare

  • They'll read the facts if you can stop presuming. We're watching baseball, not talking about people pulling the race card.

Thanks for the stats, but not thrilled about the "clear" finger pointing.

  • the thing is my name is satchel lol

  • May have been the best pitcher ever. Too bad we never got to see him until he was in his 40s.

  • awesome shit!

  • my name is Satchel Jay Rose and i was named after Satchel Paige.

He got the nickname Satchel from when youst to have a job as a kid carrying peoples satchels at a train station

  • i saw him in a pic with walter dukes, a 7 foot nba player, and he didnt look short, how tall was satch?

  • 6'3''1/2

  • I asked Yaz what he thought about facing Paige in '65: "Oh my god".

  • wheres the full video at? anyone know where i can find it?

    thanks

  • i'd hate to bat against that gentleman. Scarey scarey stuff

  • Imagine if Satchel had been allowed in the Bigs from the start. No telling how many wins he would've racked up.

  • and by the same logic, imagine how his ERA could have skyrocketed had he faced big league hitters.

  • he didn't balk he just threw good

  • if he was in the majors coudve been the worlds greatest pichter now im going to type randoml dhfjekwhdjkewqhdjkwehfjkwehjkdbnjkeherukewhcdjewkfuwehbfdjkwehjkrewhjdwehrjk3wehdjewhrjkhejkfbhejkrhjewkhfewjhrjkewhkjwehrjkerhjkwerhjkweyrhukewnfjkewrhueeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhwjedhnjmfnhjsfjdbjbdsbdjjjjjjjjjjjjjksshbjkfsjkbdjssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  • I won't even comment on your comment. But did you ever pitch three scoreless innings in the Big Leagues when you were 59 years old, like Satchel did in 1965? Or could you when you get to that age?

Forget it. You wouldn't know the Big Leagues from your bunghole.

  • ryanGoat, you are the scum of the earth.

  • ryanGOAT needs a Satchel Paige fastball right between the eyes.

    you absolute piece of garbage

  • i have a baseball timeline that shows all records of the best baseball players 1865-2000. Satchel paige threw a fastball that a batter didnt hit. But the catcher didnt find the ball in his glove. the umpire and the batter never found that ball..

  • dude.....he's not dumb

  • Sachel pitched 55 no hitters in the negro leagues! WOW!

  • IDK how it got to hitters and babe ruth, but i have to say beer and hotdogs were the steroids of that era :P

  • he was paralyzed

  • this is my grandpa

  • the best pitcher EVER! all the best players in MLB history were in the negro leagues. Josh Gibson would have put Ruth or anybody else to shame

  • He reminds me of Dontrell Willis...but not all liquored up. Satchel Paige was one of the greatest.

  • we ain't gonna forget ya satch

  • the reason he was so great was because he tricked batters...he balked...the stuff he did back then would have been well against the rules now

  • The balk rule has been in place since 1898

  • Paige's "hesitation pitch" wasn't outlawed until Paige was in his mid 40s.

  • Why does everyone want to know about Josh Gibson?

    Mike82

  • Josh hit more home runs than the Babe.

  • Possibly because he hit over 800 HR's

  • Too bad 1)that's an estimate, and 2)the Negro leagues often played high schools and thrown together local teams, so it's not like he was hitting 800 home runs (supposedly) off of the top talent at all times.

  • Unfortunately, everything pre-1947 was not against the best competition for either the Major or Negro leagues. In my opinion, baseball truly became the National Pastime in 1947. How could it have been prior with exclusions.

  • That's true, but the major leaguers still faced better hitters.

Bottom line is Babe Ruth retired with twice as many home runs as the closest guy. Considering the ground rule double being a home run (in bigger parks though) and not facing black pitchers, that'd still be like someone hitting about 1000 home runs today.

Also, no roids, and he was drunk off his ass, so I still say Babe is the best home run hitter of all time.

  • No question! Babe Ruth was the best player of all time. I say that because he had HOF pitcher ability aw well. No one else can say that. However, with that being said, Baseball as a whole became better when Black and Latinos entered the game. I don't think that can be disputed. 1947 in my opinion is when MLB became the TRUE National Pastime.

  • no way he isnt some of the best players in the history of base ball came from the negro leagues and possibly the best player ever was cool papa bell

  • No knock on Ruth. I have one of his autographed baseballs, along with Gehrig. [If Cobb had also signed it, I'd be a zillionaire.]

But as great as these guys were, they played only half of America's greatest baseball players in major league competition. The rest just had to make do, where nobody started to know who they were until 1947.

Not blaming The Babe. I'd take a 296 right field fence anytime.

  • if that was how many he threw, then all of them were the best fuckin pitches ever

  • wow ure a retard

  • He lied about his age by about at least 12 years .My great grandpa coached him in the mexican league but he had to make anglo league believe he was younger than he was for performance hype.

  • who was the guy in teh sunglasses?

  • if i can ever learn how to upload dvd clips onto youtube ill get some stuff on josh gibson

  • thanx bro, anythang i can see on Satchel makes my day

  • would have been good to see how good he was against mlb players of his time in his prime

  • He would slaughter them.

  • Fantastic video, thanks bud.

  • does anyone have any history on josh gibson

  • satchel paige rocks! wowwzah!
