i have the original on vinyl. i saw so many great bands at keil for so little money. those were great times in america, that's when k-she would play 18 minute songs on the radio. never happen today.
OMG, this takes me back; skipping school on a snowy afternoon and spending the day in a friend's black light lit basement getting stoned out of our ghords listening to this record. For you youngin's; a 'record' was a the shiny black vinyl disk that spinned on a phonograph.
Nektar was an English band. However, the current keyboard player, Klaus Henatsch, and bass player, Peter Pichl, are German. They are touring the states August/September. Check their webpage for details.
LETS GET IT RIGHT, THEY WERE AN ENGLISH BAND WHO LIVED IN GERMANY OK SAW THEM A NUMBER OF TIMES IN FACT I HAVE A FILM OF THEM I TOOK AROUND 74/75 ONSUPER 8
There was one English member of the band, Ron Howard the drummer. It is a German band. What is the deal with comments that are without any connection to accurate history from bands' eras or indiginous music? This pseudo Tube does sound like the L.A.er's that have no time or acoustic and flew a lot with accent on misheard accents.
This version sounds like it has been remastered. Organ and piano much stronger in the mix than before. Also has the highs boosted a bit. Liked the original mix better.
yeah yeah tripped to this in 79 or 80can't forget it seems so tame now but don't know who i'd be without this little nugget in the back of my mind.they say it takes a lifetime to understand the things you write when you are young. Progressive Rock Lives Again-This is a "Taste" of the Progressive Rock the '70's. Anyone into this music-pass it on to someone younger than you, so we can keep the "torch" going-this is not the stuff you're going to hear on the radio-but remember why Sly Stone said at Woodstock, "If it was good in the past, it's still good" Amen to that.
Wow, phenomenal classic, Hearing this again reminded me of the scene in the movie Almost Famous when the kids sister leaves home and leaves all her albums behind and tells the kid to listen to Tommy with just a candle lit....it will change your life......I was fourteen at the time, I think this, and hearing Yes Starship Trooper for the first time pretty much solidified my musical taste and direction.....Wow....I'm sure I was listening to this with the blacklight on smokin the hippie lettece..
@porgy I was there with you. What an awesome band at a point in my life.St.Louis was one of their biggest fanbases in the U.S. thanks to KSHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is recorded from the quad mix. You can barely hear the guitar. Get the LP or the 2002 remaster. I have this version on the 1st released cd It needs to be tossed in the trash.
bdonald Scott and Steve you were part of my little heaven remember the Santa Monica Civic, Roy was one of the best, and we shared that little bit of heaven, Its bands like this that make me glad Iam me.
Saw 'em at the Roxy in Northhampton, PA in '7o something. Great show, still remember it. three video screens, great sound system...ah the good old days!
If you have followed me from mgmt -kids, shiny toy guns- mjr tom, sniff'n the tears-driver's seat, captain beyond- sufficiently breathless. I am out of Crown Royal and have brought out the Petron Silver. My musical taste is as eclectic as is my taste for liquor. I have no lime. Life is so hard. Moving on to spirit- I've gotta line on you. It could get interesting in a little while.
Progressive Rock from 1973-how many musicians do I have out there that remember this-if you were into this, you must have also been into King Crimson, Yes, PFM-remember them-the Italian Prog Group, Shadowfax, Gentle Giant, Genesis-when Peter was still singing, Gryphon, & Jethro Tull-Passion Play.
thats funny cause today i bought this album in a psych rock category and liked the artwork thats also why i bought the first captain beyond record what a good choice that was!
@eastcoastguitardude Interesting comment - bluebird was the name of a mind control program in the late sixties. Steven Stills dad was involved. Butterflies and Bluebirds suggest attempts at mind control....many elements of rock are based on mental coercion systems,,,,
Had a little cult of your own? Good for your friend and you! I mean, "good for you guys" for doing back then what came quite naturally to those of us raised on this kind of music. Of course, jumping forward across the decades, your question "what was wrong with us"? is perfectly reasonable.
The music itself still sounds quite good, doesn't it? It's survived our really intense liner note reading.
@eastcoastguitardude you are a pinhead.....so fukin funny. I took this out from the library when I was 12? or so....it bleu my little pea brain>>>> great music...I am now 52 and it is still nice to hear
in the book "search for the manchurian candidate" is described how the cia introduced lsd into the university scene from where it spread through the whole world. they did a fine job - without it musik like this would never have been crated...
Quite right. The Passport mix (US) and early Bellephon (Germany) are Nektar approved. In the 90s Bellephon released on CD a mix that the band (and fans) greatly detested- a complete abomination.
I'm not sure if they had the same problem with Tab.
This band had a great sound, one they truly could call their own.
Roye and Ron are still active- See Nektar and you won't be sorry.
Oh this music sends shivers down my spine. Saw them quite often in Germany, lots of shit was smoked at the Otto-Bernd-Halle in Germany, Darmstadt. You did not need to buy stuff on your own - there was enough smoke in the air.
Pick up their new live CD, "Fortyfied" celebrating Nektar's 40th Anniverary from the website, nektarsmusic. And listen to "Where Are You Now" from "Book of Days"...it's the finale to Remember the Future (also on "Fortyfied")
erm, uhm, ah when the frag did this mix happen? Where'd that keyboard come from? This is like desecrating a temple or something. Blasphemy! Evil doers! Away with your noodlings! Remember, the future is coming and the next generation needs the Bluebird's 'unchanging' message too! Seriously, if the guys did this themselves the thought of making it better for the fans is appreciated but you just can't mess with a classic. Even if it's your own! Axe this. Peace.
Back in the LP days, there were 2 different mixes of this album available. The same thing was true of their Tab in the Ocean LP. And the Horslips album Book of Invasions as well, the Irish folk prog classic.
ah, I did not know this. The small group of Nektar fans I knew 'back in the days' all had the same mix of both Remember and Tab. Were these different mixes possibly released in different countries so that the US only saw one of them?
My LP collection is in cartons, so I can't confirm easily. From memory then, the US LP Tab is *very* different from the German and British LPs. US is "sparser"/"leaner". Like the mix brought down a lot of detail to make a cleaner album more like normal rock. I personally always preferred the Euro version, but a friend (Bob) liked the US. A different take on the same material, but both valid.
With RTF, the differences are more subtle. I have the German Bellaphon LP; it's possible I never owned the US. Obviously therefore I must prefer the German! This matter gets discussed in detail out in cyberspace somewhere.
This brings back a LOOOOOT of memories and some of the best memories of my life. I'll never forget as long as I live, this was when people actually cared and wanted peace and love for everyone.. Thanks so much for sharing..
Too bad no one has posted both sides w/ the newer remix ..I'm still listening to the record I got in 75..excellent work but like a Floyd album you need to here the whole thing..This remix does it no justice..
This sounds like the original CD release which had the keyboards WAY up in the mix & the guitar way down, which is the opposite of the proper way it was originally released on vinyl. It has since been reissued on CD with the correct mix!
in my mind this album has the distinction of being one of the last of the great head trip albums, about 1973. its aptly titled in my mind. after 'wish you were here' came out in 1975 my high friends dispersed. and the golden age ended.
Nektar was a great band....it's too bad they didn't achieve the kind of success as, say, Yes did. The mix here is a bit weird, but a great track nonetheless.

German band? They were Britons who wound up in Hamburg looking for a gig. The band was Roye, Derek 'Mo' Moore, Alan 'Taff' Freeman and Ron Howden.
Off subject, Alan Freeman should be ashamed for cutting out the guitar in this mix.
