I had a grandpa with a similar situation to yours, though I would say I was a tad closer to him than what you describe. Not by much, but a tiny bit none the less. I tried to visit him with my old man a few years ago shortly before his death, but he was pretty much out of it and asleep, so we let him rest and moved along. I wanted badly to see him again, but didn't get the chance before he died. It is sad to this day, but I am glad that I tried to see him one more time. Good video.

Maybe there is something you see in your own grandfather that reminds you of your ownself.

If you can get passed the depressing part of the old folks home it might be worth it.
