@Chrissss698 I guess I would describe a sample as something that is made by hand in the waveform generator. An instrument would be something that you import, which may sound like a guitar or drum. Kind of like the words clip and magazine. They are different and have different meanings but as far as i'm concerned whichever one you use i'll know what you mean.
@Chrissss698 Simply. A sample builts the basic of an instrument. Like in a Piano. The Strings are the Samples and the resonace board is the Instrument. Tchnical the instrument lays an modulation over the sample. It is called ADSR (A)tack, (D)ecay, (S)ustain, (R)elease. and somtimes panning, too.
@Chrissss698 Think of an instrument as a set of samples. Samples are recorded at a certain note and since "music trackers" change the frequency/pitch of the sound to reproduce a different note, some sample sounds do not "fit" well when played at higher (or lower) frequencies, that can be solved thanks to instruments. With them you can set different samples of the same "sound" but recorded in a different note to make that particular sample sound more natural.
"Utterly helpless" barely describes the overwhelming feeling I got when opening up one of these programs for the first time. Finally thanks to an actual good tutorial compared to other shitty ones around here, hopefully i can move on from garageband.
PS... Using samples is not looked down upon, except maybe in the chiptune scene (?) Most old mods from the 90's used samples.
I saw you used Renoise for your newest tune.. You should checkout SDcompo sometime, it's a monthly tracking competition. Most people there use Renoise, including myself, but other trackers are allowed as well.
very helpful. I still have one problem, however. Whenever I record a melody with an instrument, The sound of the instrument will not diminish until the next note. For example, If I entered one note in the first space, the note resounds for the whole song. Any advice? I could really use the help.
@thechsradio My newest tutorial (where I talk about the volume envelope has a few solutions to your problem). The easy answer though would be in the volume section of the channel (the first five dots being the note/octave/instrument, the sixth and seventh being volume, and the last three being effects) you can change the volume to 00, or hold down the minus key for a fadeout.
Hi, I have a simple question about MilkyTracker that I can't seem to find the answer to. When I go to draw in the sample editor, the wave sort of snaps into place and I can't make small adjustments to it. Is there an option somewhere to disable this? I feel like I've searched everywhere.
@marcusAbraham88 It sounds to me like the sample isnt long enough. When you make a sample, try making the sample size around 500. It should let you be more flexible when trying to make small adjustments.
This was extremely informative. Thanks a lot. But next time, make sure your voice is audible. I turned my headset ALL the way up and could barely hear you.
That was very helpful, Thanks :)
