This is first one I started but I assume they keep getting started because you seem like the type of guy we see who could drop dead at any moment, even though you're not as old as you look. Hope you don't, but just an observation.
Hi Urgelt... long time no talk! I just came back to this video and was instantly reminded of a song (which did not exist at the time of this video's posting) called "Human" by The Killers.
In it, the topic of being "human" or "dancer" is discussed, with the former representing freedom in movement and choices, and the latter representing synchronized assigned steps. I think you might find it worthy of listening to... it's right here on YouTube!
The idea of dancer as puppet contrasts with the idea dancers have of themselves. It's an Hegelian antithesis.
Sometimes it seems to me that the global conversation is full of echoes and reverberations, themes and variations on themes which keep resurfacing, riffing through possibilities, arguing. Memes: always evolving, never the same, always struggling for dominance.
You truly have a hypnotizing channel! I was hanging on every word and watching every second of this video..... As an artist, who is a reluctant dancer (wife drags me and I oblige out of love:), I can see how some people can use dance as a medium to communicate to the world. But, dance does not communicate to me. I have observed musicals and left unsure of the kinesthetic message and relied on the words. I choose visual art to communicate b/c it makes the most sense to me. Your essay was enjoyed!
Communication is funny. Even words - especially words - do not perfectly convey a thought from one mind to another. Distortions, gaps, mistakes, misunderstandings, incomprehension - they all creep in.
But we keep trying, don't we? There are few human needs so basic as the need to be understood.
Dancers have an unique and dynamic vocabulary, and with it, they speak. Sometimes, I think they speak important truths. But it's not always easy to know.
I haven't been on You tube much these days and see that you haven't uploaded in a while... still it was nice find this little gem that hadn't seen before. And you link to AsertyDances was delightful.
I believe that when one accepts life the way it is, one is in harmony. It is a matter of allowing oneself to accept what is around oneself and not to question that which is beyond words. One begins to understand the true meaning of patience and understanding. One begins not to fear, one begins to really love. The more we know, the more we find out what we do not know.
The way I see it, we 'dance' less and less, more and more we choose to merely, exist.
Language evolves. In the youthful African-American community, "nigga" has nearly come full circle. It's sometimes used as a synonym for "brother," in the fullest sense of the word - someone like yourself, someone you can trust, someone who shares a heritage with you.
Jordans03 is saying he feels soothed by my essay, though he's not quite sure about the point I'm making in it. Fair enough; this is by far the strangest and most obtuse essay I've fielded here.
It's been my experience that about half of the commenters "get" the irony of this essay.
The rest simply do not see it. It is as if they were colorblind, and bored by the monochrome which is all they can perceive.
That isn't the viewer's fault. It's mine. I knew when I made this video that in our literal culture, irony is a dying sport. When we wish to mock, sarcasm is the tool of choice now, not irony.
I would have refrained from the attempt, but AsertyDances can be very persuasive.
Urgelt. First of all, your voice is fantastic. And i agree with Garland81, you should be "The Sage of Youtube". You make it a better place. You do things for people like talking about your life, of personal subject and best of all: You read poems and tell stories. You deserve an award for the service.
As for "sage," I think I have something in common with the "wise fools" sprinkled through Shakespeare's plays. They're still fools. But sometimes they say something worth hearing anyway.
Urgelt, you are mysterious i am sure that thousands would love to know more about your story. Some background information or maybe just some stories that would better create an image of who you are and how you came to be that way.
I'm fascinated by ideas. I like to discuss them. That's my focus here.
Occasionally I will let down my hair a bit with a regular correspondent, but I see no need to expose myself to strangers. There's no upside to it - unless I want to flog my channel's popularity.
You have the tongue of a cult leader. Your solitude which was once a gift of introspection and synthesis has now grown too potent. It poisons you. You validate too many of your delusions. You will forget to make use of your falls, when the world is too slippery. The triphammer turns to zero.
In this video, I've undercut my own narrow argument at every turn, in every phrase. My intention was to convey a sort of ironic self-mockery, and to broaden our sense of what dance can be.
Whatever I intended, once art is created, any response to it is valid. It becomes a Rorsarch ink blot. There is no right answer, only the answer you bring with you.
Its instinctual grandfather, overanalysis or realization of the instinct, disengages the mechanism. Like breathing intentionally, if conscentrated on, will "disengage". Its obviously not a rational function, that is, how we typically define rational, but no doubt as I see it, a reproductive function, if a sophisticated one, it a way to test our instinctual rythems on or with others, to innitiate attraction, or propper matching. Or not? You make the hair on the back of my neck raise up.
I don't perceive a need for apology. You heard me out, then politely expressed your reaction. If we're here to do much of anything else, I've yet to figure out what it is.
Beautiful, again, Urgelt! Sounds like you've been dancing wherever your life has taken you. ...and I remember those days of 'shuffling' on the floor, in 1973. =)

The pieces of work I have heared from this man has given me hope. There esits writers with something interesting to say. That you-tube is not just a dumping ground for video's about people eating things they shouldn't, or doing other silly things. thank you.
I just now realized I might have got that wrong. I think what he infact said was that art is the physical manifestation of emotion and that dance was this manifest by the body.
I really enjoyed your Sam McGee poem by the way. My grandad would read that to us when we were little right before bed. He was a greater fan of Robert Service than mother goose. I did that same piece for a performance class.
Art as emotion? That's a fairly workable definition - though I have to wonder if any definition of art imposes limits on what is essentially limitless.
One thing I learned when I posted "Sam McGee" is that Robert Service's remarkable legacy is still intact. He's much loved by a great many people.
Most people are interesting to me. There's so much variety in how they tackle life, endure its pain, celebrate its pleasures, how they learn and what they believe, the mistakes they make and the things they get right. People are endlessly fascinating.
It's about regretting being unable to experience ultimate profound joy. To dance in this sense is to feel ecstasy, to soar, to be alive, to feel the universe running through you like an electric current. And it's also about the realization that now it is too late to dance, that no matter what other pleasures have been experienced in life, there is one ultimate joy which was never attained and now can never be. To dance is to be alive. It's bitter sarcasm when he says it means "not much".

Well, that's a request that is easy to satisfy. Go to my profile and click on "The Raven" trailer. In the video text block, there's a link to the full video. Mejpye created the film, I supplied the narration.
Yes... the essay is intended to be ironic, poking fun at a too-narrow definition of dance; it refutes itself. And makes me the butt of my own joke, heh.
About half the viewers seem to get it, which is pretty good, I think. I have to remember never to underestimate the audience here, lot of smart folks in it.
I've noticed a lot of Hollywood people enjoy dancing for exercise... actors especially. Grace, suppleness and endurance seems important in filmmaking, particularly for actors.
I think the same way, except I don't use poems as you do. What use is the poems? What use is dancing? What are you trying to say here? Do you feel you lack right-side brain characteristics? Do you think you're too masculine? Emotion isn't much for you? You're too analytical? I think this applies to me. But what use is the poem?
i love the way the educationally undernourished have to reply with punative insults such as 'hey he looks like gandalf' or 'he uses big werdz, plz help me'
you seem to be a really nice man. Im gonna look through all of your videos for more gold. I want to advice you to read a book called "hash" by a swedish author named Torgny Lindgren. I got a feeling you would like it.
Will you marry me!? YOU ARE SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU USE SUCH BIG WORDS! my GAUKY ADDELENCES BODY ON DISPLAY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! YOU ARE ME FREAKIN HERO!!!! you even threw parties. I swear you are god.
The essay along with the way you verbalize your feeling into it-Wonderful! Maybe for those of you who are leaving brash comments-U should go watch something a little more on your level, like cartoons
wow, no offense or anything but this is really boring, sorry it's just, not funny, not interesting and just not something i would wanna watch, but by the comments it's pretty popular, lol. Good Job! for talking the long about 'dance'
And another thing, the last time I checked Jewish men weren't the only ones who sported beards. For example, my Uncle Kenny - a Catholic French-Canadian - was possessed of a thick, rich, luxuriant set of chin whiskers, the kind that catches the soup before it hits the shirt. Shows what YOU know.
all my respect 4 ppl like this man ......i can see that he's an intelligent person, with a lot of experiance in life .....just BEAUTIFUL ...ART .... not only a simple speech ....
At first, I thought I was listening the same voice that appears at the beggining of "The Name of the Rose" film. This fact kept me watching and listening. Since then, I looked up for the rest of Urgelt´s videos, and I really enjoy each one of them. Finally, same as Adso de Melk, I think I´ve found a guidance teacher. Thanks Urgelt.
Well said, you find the simple pleasures in life and that's what is more important. In your voice, I hear pain and wisdom. A lifetime of joy, sorrow and insight. That is what your essay is to me, a simple observation and how it fits into your view of the scheme of things. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Such contradictions used to flow easily from the lips of king's fools, or so Shakespeare imagined.
The Bard showed us how a fool could become a vessel for art. I exist, foolishly, deep in his shadow.

Can you please read "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe? Perhaps in a hollidays special.
BatShakerJami 4 years ago
Well, that's a request that is easy to satisfy. Go to my profile and click on "The Raven" trailer. In the video text block, there's a link to the full video. Mejpye created the film, I supplied the narration.
Hope you enjoy it!

Ah...but your words are dancing! Lovely poetry. I'm so glad I found you.
ProfPiffles 4 years ago
Yes... the essay is intended to be ironic, poking fun at a too-narrow definition of dance; it refutes itself. And makes me the butt of my own joke, heh.
About half the viewers seem to get it, which is pretty good, I think. I have to remember never to underestimate the audience here, lot of smart folks in it.

Urgelt, i love you videos! By the way, i love your voice and you would be an amazing for a very long poem. Gratz man on the honors and awards =D
Magicianxox 4 years ago
I disagree. You are, in fact, dancing.
It's only when you think about it that you cease to dance, like a butterfly, touched, ceases to fly.

Hi Urgelt, Like your essay. For me, Dancing vigorously is great exercise. Really helped me to stay in shape and keep my weight in a manageable range
"cat"
dadhiltonmps 4 years ago
I've noticed a lot of Hollywood people enjoy dancing for exercise... actors especially. Grace, suppleness and endurance seems important in filmmaking, particularly for actors.

This is certainly my favourite video you've made.
Very clever.

This is a dance for the blind. If spoken words could be seen, this would be one for the ages.
Beautifully sad

This is simultaneously the saddest and most joyful description of dance I have ever heard.

what up good essay but can be long it can be in a book,i didnt watch it all but i still wanted to coment nicely so if i didnt then sorry

7x5Blunt 4 years ago
As far as I can tell, it's to make people happy. I know this particular poem puts a massive smile on my face.

did you have that jewish beered when you had that girlfriend in college?

"beered"???
robtran 4 years ago
And another thing, the last time I checked Jewish men weren't the only ones who sported beards. For example, my Uncle Kenny - a Catholic French-Canadian - was possessed of a thick, rich, luxuriant set of chin whiskers, the kind that catches the soup before it hits the shirt. Shows what YOU know.
