  • Starts like a slower version of God given. Interesting.

  • This isnt under rated. I rate it 10/10. Im sure most of you do too.

  • @khitchary Thats still underrated

  • i love this song!i dont have a word!!

  • The beat of this song is amazing

  • why don't nin videos have more views? that piece of shit bruno mars song grenade has around 300 million. ah well. more NIN for us haha

  • I use to play the crap out of World Of Warcraft while listening to this album. When this song would come on I would turn it up and be glad I was (zeros and ones) running a dungeon.

  • We Are Internet, We Are Zeros and Ones... And I like it!

  • Underrated as fuck. It should have 7 billions views.

  • Gotta love the outro. Heaven.

  • shame on us, doomed from the start. May God have mercy on our dirty little hearts.

  • This song refers to a "zero/sum game" which is any game where there is a clear loser and a clear winner. This is reflective of a very primitive and dualistic state of consciousness which humankind has found it difficult to escape from. This tendency within us may very well destroy us. The zeroes and ones is a reference to the losers and winners that result from opposition against each other. We do this instead of finding a way where we can all win by realizing that we are all one. Shame on us.

  • @spacecase8888 We are not all one. This is the fucking point. People who push for this idea of '1', trying to unite us under their own ideas of what is right for everyone are the enemy. NOT INDIVIDUALISM. NOT FREEDOM.

  • @maxdamagus Every government in the world realizes and understands the concept of one body as a sum of parts. How do you think big wars are coordinated? Surely, it's not because you're fighting for home and country. You fight for your Masters. Go ahead.

A slave who doesn't know He's slave hates being called a slave, but a slave that realizes it's a slave has the capacity to free itself from enslavement.

Human resource management is the game, and you're a resource. Do you continue being one?

  • @bluephreakr Nations. Not the entire races of humanity. These same nations have been co-ordinating and inter-mixing to numb this disparity and trying to forcibly forge this more maleable 'one'. It is not natural, and it will never succeed. If anything humans become, in pockets, more genetically diverse over time. You've gone a bit off tangent with the fighting thing. I am free. You are the consipiracy nut, trapped by invisible walls.

  • i'm depressed but suprisingly this helps.

  • Probably the saddest song I've got in my collection. I'd say it's even more devastating than Hurt

  • And did you ever really find, when you closed your eyes, any place that was still, and at peace?

  • The album is a story. This describes the 'end of the end' where as the begining of the end is the start of the album. I would say the turning point would be The Warning.

  • Even though it is about the end, there is still something so very optimistic in it. That through the chaos of the de-reformation and theocratic dictatorship, a humanity appears that is kind, aware, and enlightened. I can't wait for the sequel.

  • On my Ketamine infusion playlist... ;)

  • Year Zero is such an underrated album.

  • @remywood81 Yeah, It's true...

  • When I ate 9.7 grams of mushrooms this song was playing when I saw an asteroid hit the earth. It was the scariest thing ever

  • @miceskin i would have started singing :')

  • @miceskin Epic.

  • Shame on us.

  • May God have mercy on our dirty little whores!

  • @BWD4Life "Hearts" not "whores".

  • since i feel i relate to everything... this song gives me peace.....thanks nin

  • 8 people dont have dirty little hearts

  • @Saloptus you mean do xD

  • Incredibly moving song. Thank you.

  • Zero Sum, kinda reminds me of humanity, how the further we keep going the further we seem to decline, its like we're going in the wrong direction. We think having more money or having a prettier wife or having no children at all equates to better living but it all sums back/up to zero again. We even think traveling into space will solve our problems but you can't escape nature. because nature is everywhere. It sounds like a sad song but its actually a pleasent song, because now we can begin-

  • @ERiiK98 going inwards...

  • feels like an apology to me and my raped thoughts. but that's just me

  • 0s and ones like nothing and somthing. dark and light but its also binary code wich of course we all know that also egyptians used a binary code math sytem along with all there other brilliant systems, things are going to change guys like the like no one has seen, its the 1930s all over again

  • LONG ASS INTRO.

  • It might be just me, but I've always felt that the chorus of this song is HIGHLY reminiscent of A Silver Mount Zion, particularly the Horses in the Sky album.

  • This song represents my feelings about the life I threw away for so many years down the spiral of drug addiction. You dont feel the pain you cause until you get clean and then its almost too powerful to take on all the emotions you blocked out for so long.. I think that might have been what trent was feeling also

  • @StickyInADarkBlueCut "you are the reason, why I'm not afraid" :)

  • You know what I think this song is about? Teddy bears.

Shut the hell up people, who cares what it's about. : |

  • @KellehChu What it's about is why people love this song...

  • Zero sum means that when all is said and done, it all sums to zero. All gains equate to losses later. Population growth is the real culprit. Our economy is a product of that (Garrett Hardin). Even if you we rid ourselves of wealth hoarders at the top and welfare leaches at the bottom - it doesn't matter because it would still be zero sum in the end. Nothing about our economy is sustainable and people don't understand the exponential function and how the end is tragically unavoidable.

  • if you wanna know more check out

"blood diamonds" by Lupe Fiasco (a real artist doing hip hop)

or just read up on venesuela (pardon my spelling), or look at what many argue to be a "war for oil" in the middle east.

This is why the world is starting to hate the USA, we get fat and actually have to try to avoid consumption (because we are programed to do so) while the rest of the world just wishes they still had clean water to drink and something, anything, to eat.

    Shame on us.

  • NIN is a religion to me

  • @Hackmoune Your "God" is dead and no one cares

  • this song refers to the economic theory of zero sum.

If the money you invest in something eventually only meets the sum of your debts, the total equals zero. therefore, nothing won, nothing lost.

    a zero sum game.

reznor is comparing life to this theory... he's saying that there is no point. we're born, we live, and then we die. he is very pessimistically saying that we gain nothing from life. as if, we don't go anywhere when we die. we're simply terminated.

  • @taiyajarva Well we either go one way or the other. Heaven or hell. I personally plan to go to heaven if you dont mind :D

  • @jamesdrummerman

who the fuck are you to say we go one way or the other, the africans say we go to the volcano, the chinese say we go to buddha, the hindus say we go to shiva, the satanists say jesus looses, the mormors say all other christians go to hell, the pagans believe we return to the earth mother, and some people say you die and your life starts over again, and muslums say allah.

what if you're wrong about shiva or allah? then you go to hell along with me for following the wrong god

  • @jamesdrummerman As the heavens will fall, we will be together soon, if we will be anything at all.

Do you hear that? Even Heaven's got to end. Which gave me the conclusion, after a time, there will truly be nothing, not anything resembling what we see, anyway.

The future sure looks bleak, doesn't it?

  • @bluephreakr heavens meaning the sky, the clouds. That will end. But even though I try to reach out to you guys, you constantly turn the other way. You don't even try it. Who am I to judge though? My faith is with me and with others, you believe what you believe. It is a free country after all.

  • @taiyajarva

actually a zero sum economy means that basically, it's a closed system.

if you take 3/4 well there is only 1/4 for everyone else.

he is condeming the USA for sucking up the world's wealth and leaving the rest of the world with nothing.

  • @traebarlow Actually what this song is saying is that in the grand scheme of things, we think we're "something special", but at the end of it all when the world ends we are nothing. Life is a zero sum game.

  • So someone told me that in the line before the second chorus, he says 'we will be together soon... if we will be anything at all' but underneath he also simultaneously sings '...and we will be invincible.' i can kind of hear it but i dont know if thats just because im listening for it or that its really there. Does anyone else hear this or can back it up?

  • @ricosuave3355 I bought this the very day it came out and heard a lot of shit throughout the album that made me rewind to make sure if I heard it or not haha, I do hear words in the background though, I'm not sure about that though.

  • @ricosuave3355 I can make out "we will be..." and I hear another b sound in there. It's very possible.

  • i came

  • life runs on numerical codes wether human or artificial.

  • I'd have to believe it means that we've went from the start to the end; reaching a sum of zero(Aka the world has ended)

Then again, I dont pay attention to all the complex binary :|

  • This is a beautiful song.

  • Yes it is.

  • Zero's and One's are binary (base two math), On/Off. In the context of the song Zero's and One's means Positives and Negatives.

  • or in correct order in relation to the lyrics Negatives and Positives.

  • Comment removed

  • what do you think, boise2009? are we quadrary?? while computers are binary and thus we are way cooler?

  • you are trying to comare humanity to a useless number system?

  • useless number system......says the person on a computer that runs on a bunch of one's and zero's. anyone else see the irony here?

our lives are built around computer systems. our lives essentially depend on computers that are full of useless numbers.

  • We're definitely way cooler than these pieces of junk.

  • 0's and 1's is a reference to nano technology and the fact that everything has a code of zeros and ones.

  • yep, PJRock, just to add to it i like to think of how our code is in 4's, Quadrary"?? 3 is tertiary? i think. computers are binary, and we are twicw that, A,G,C,T? geez community collage was a while ago. Anine Guanine, .....shit, i forget, but we are twicw as cool as computers, check out "The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the origines of knowledge." that book is scientifically documented very well and if it doesn't bring questions to the reader to ponder for years, they are a sack of nails.

  • So I've been thinking about this 0's and 1's lyric. Could it have to do with sex? I mean, its like we are programmed to have sex, to reproduce. and 0's and 1's represent some obvious things.

    "shame on us

doomed from the start (born with sexual impulses)

may god have mercy on our dirty little hearts (we shouldnt be ashamed of our impulses like RELIGION says)

for all we have done, and all we ever were.

Btw, I'm not saying thats what I believe, quite the opposite actually. imo what those lines mean

  • Best song of Year Zero. Gives a modern war-like twist to Hurt.

    5/5

  • my fav song off year zero

  • The line "And all we ever were , Just zeros and ones" keeps bugging me cause I don't know what it means!

    Awesome song tho!

  • It means we are living in an ancestor simulation.

  • do you know a little bit about it?

Id be curious as to what information you can share with us on that particular matter.

  • Basically, it's likely that we're all living in a computer simulation run by the progeny of our original selves.

  • I don't claim to know the "correct" interpretation but I liked someone's suggestion that it wasn't the obvious, "computer/binary" related. But rather zeros and ones meaning people who count (us here in the US) and people who don't ("brown people" in other countries).

  • you're a fucking idiot. he wasn't talking about "how to count", he was talking about mattering. this is a concept album in the first place, so any racism is just part of the world it's from (see god given).

btw, i hear there's a period shortage. might want to cut down a bit.

  • @ConcreteSky21 well apparently not if you think that racism is the meaning behind this song

  • Not that I can pick a fave NIN song but... sometimes I like to just call this my fave. :)

I'll be playing it in my head when the world ends, if I'm not too busy.

  • agreed

  • lol, "I'll be playing it in my head when the world ends, if I'm not too busy"

    XD

  • @ratexla Well put.

Before I was born this section of the Universe was formed over a period of many billions of years, yet I felt nothing of it, it is as though all creation happened in an instant. When I die, the Universe will literally collapse and time will cease to exist. What a sad truth that is, nothing matters except that we do our best to make this life livable.

Be brave in this unknown we have been thrown into!!!

  • I love this song too :) Trent is genius

  • is no one listening to trent's words in this album its all about the new conspiracy and aliens

  • i completely agree with you, Ghosts is a great release

  • 911 was a contolled demolition

  • Then why are you listening to it?

  • this song is great if you listen with headphones

  • that wasnt an insult idiot

  • This will be the song we sing at our final hour.

Wondering how they get the drums like that...

Anyways, listen to the remix on the year zero remix cd. Much better I think.

  • We don't have to accept a final hour or Trent would not have published the CD. Fight! For whatever it is you're talking about(of the many issues) you need to fight! Be aware of the laws being passed around you and at the national level. If you care about the environment, act accordingly!

  • well said. i do think we need to fight, but i honestly think that well only be prolonging the inevitable. but ill stand in the lines fighting for our rights.

  • ill be right beside ya bro!

  • "we're all just zeroes and ones..."

  • lol, i wasnt insulting them.

  • Truly a devastating song. The lyrics sneak up on you as you're swept along inexorably to the end. It's all the end.

  • omg ur liek gay n stuf cuz u hav a dif opnininion 2 me!

I agree however, the music itself was tedious and the lyrics were equally unimaginative. However, Trent appeared to have nailed his target audience of the slightly masochistic, depressed middle-class teenager.

  • Tedious? I never said it was tedious. Weird.

I love the song, myself. The lyrics are of the carpe diem type that people need to hear every day of their day-in-day-out lives. Devastating is a compliment. =D

  • LOL I really like NIN and defend em everytime but your comment was pretty fuckin funny.

However it is highly likely it will not be respected by others so take your comments and shove em up your arse you sado-masochistic fucker! lol

  • If you ask your schools nicely, they might just give your parents a refund.

  • LOL I roffled.

  • Oh dear. I hope that wasn't too painful. :)

  • as opposed to extremely narcissistic, sickly-ecstatic high-class cheerleader?

great music, great lyrics. and the deal clincher? relevance to our times : )

  • Oh amen, christ! I don't understand listening to things that are chirpy twerpy paeans to consumerist "love."

The wind beneath my wings was supplied by bloody beans!

  • yay blood-fart-spurts!

  • Thank you. I try.

  • ttthhhee hhaannd ooff ggoodd

  • ok ive been doing this alot today...

    IM TRENTSINTERN!!

HIT ME UP SPIRALERS WOOT WOOT!!!

  • This has got to be one of the best songs on year zero...

  • love it!

  • great

  • this is my favourite song of the new album .

    yum.

  • NIN has never ceased to amaze me

  • yeah you have the reason!!...

    ... he's really white

  • In fact it makes my eyes hurt...or maybe that's the burning aura of greatness he emits?

  • NIN= souless beat (very good thing), beautiful melodies, strange sounding syntheziers that are carefully used to sound amazing, and some of the most deep and honest lyrics i've ever heard, that could move anyone.

...that's a bit more accurate. even if you don't enjoy nine inch nails, you can not deny trent reznor is a musical genius.

  • i notice you use the words "rich" and "white" to try and make him seem like a less credible person. well, i don't know how the cencoring works on this site, but i'm white and i find it really offensive that you use my race as an insult. i would say something but i dont think the site would let me.

and he's only rich because of his music, idiot.

that was all for xlledx by the way..

  • your a fucking idiot, what do you listen to fool? rich black guys, most everyone in the business is rich, and no one is stopping you from being rich, except that GED hanging over your 10 year old computer

  • what makes you say the things you say, what is behind it?

  • Honestly i think you have it all wrong, and you have a distorted view of trent and rock all together, by the way what does him being white have to do anything with his music

  • who said anything about him being happy? anyway.. i enjoy his music despite what somepeople might think of him.

  • Actually a happy Trent Reznor wrote With Teeth, and this album is a concept album, not one about his personal emotional experiences. So you are quite wrong. Do a little reasearch before blasting someone. Yeah, he was addicted to drugs and what not from Pretty Hate Machine-The Fragile, but he cleaned up and was "in a good place" when writing With Teeth.

  • you = whiny child, grow up, NIN is pure art.

  • You sum NIN up in 14 words,

I sum you up in 1 - CUNT

  • Your reply says far more about you than anything else, O1.

  • What the fuck are you talking about? I came on this video and saw this cunt slagging NIN off so I wrote this message to tell him to go fuck himself however you can go fuck off and suck trent reznors cock you fuckin faggot

  • Again, your sterling qualities shine through.

Well done, little man. Well done.

  • hahaha little man.

    Okay dude whatever.

You've made 'zero' (no pun intended) videos on youtube and give people like me who sticks up for their favorite band shit, soo that makes me little? As I said go fuck yourself

    Thanks!

(go to page 2 of the comments and check that 'little' dudes comment motherfucker!)

  • If you're utterly unable to speak to the merits of the song, you are indeed little. Bravo for proving that yet again.

  • Haha

    Bravo?

Hows about you stop being a Zero!

    Bravo moi, flicken du

  • No, darlin'. I'll leave that to you. You are, it would seem, the self flicken expert here.

  • woah I must admit it I got owned by an 87 year old

  • Don't worry, sonny. Next time, I'll take my teeth out.

  • This song is so beautiful. Every time I hear it I just fall into a trance. Zero Sum is one of the best songs off the Year Zero album.

  • beautiful. how I would love a shade more volume on the vocals.

  • Well the beauty of the multi tracks released is you can turn up the vocals yourself. Recently I listened to just the vocals and piano....I got quite emotional.

  • beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

This song leaves me with an emotion I can't quite explain. I agree with voodooval down there.

  • the fun of it is that only very few get it...hahaha! Good work Trent!

  • check out my music video for zero-sum....

tried to capture some good visuals to snych with trent's amazing track

  • i'm a long-time hardcore NIN fan and i love this album. it's very different but still has the amazing indie-rock sound and genius social and politial message i have grown to love. so glad nine inch nails didn't lose its charm

  • Impressive song.

This is the kind of song, that(in my opinion) everyone should hear. Even though, some old NIN fans might find hard to swallow that Trent's rebellion has passed. He's now matured, expressing on his new cd, as if there is no tomorrow, forcing him to see what really matters, and talking about things in a manner that is not longer meant to shock.

In short words: This man is truly a genius.

  • I never thought it would be possible without some external influence (like drugs) but i experienced a panic attack the first time i listened to this song.
