One of the Best Lead Vocalist of his time and even nown because there's nothing to campare with to day. The Lead Vocalist on this piece his name was " Smitty"
This song brings back so many memories...before Luther Vandross and any other wedding song, this was it. My cousin (he's deceased now) played the record and sung this at his wedding and it puts a smile on my face because he couldn't carry a tune from here to there, but you couldn't tell him that...it was so funny...thanks for posting this song...it brings happy tears to my eyes...
To bad this is the only Can I on YouTube cause of all the background noise the person recording it is making. Very distracting. This is a classic great song otherwise.
Thanks so much for this. LOL Just listened to it live at a Gerald Alston Show here in DC; took a pic w/him & he autographed my "Gerald Alston Sings Sam Cooke" CD. Great time was had by all... he brought down the house w/"Turn Out the Stars."
I was 19 yrs, and she was 17 yrs. We had been dating about 2 months. Other than a quick peck on the lips, when parting...we had never really kissed (she took great pride in being a "good girl" lol). One Sunday afternoon, while she sat in my lap with her head on my shoulder.."Can I"..came on the radio. OMG!!! Our lips became magnets! We lip-locked through the entire song, stopping only to gasp for air! Afterwards we were almost embarrassed at how "it" came upon us so quickly! Sweet youth!! LOL
@riverjrdn ...Thanks to the Manhattans' "Can I", I'm sure there were a lot of "Good Girls Gone Wild" ! When all else failed, you could always pull out The Manhattans! BAM!!! LOL
@CheckMate657879 Yep! I always find what I want on Amazon, as well. And, you're right. They aren't crooks - orders arrive fairly quickly, too. And, for the reply below. You're welcome. (smiley:wink)
This song is my all time favorite. I was a teenager in the '60's and this song made me stop in my tracks and I became so emotional. Never before had I heard a man honor his bride to the fullest as this song suggests. . . . "and every little road that we stop at, it's gonna be our lover's lane. . . ." -- oh my. Smiles.
Oh my God this song bring's back such good memories of my early teenage years of the middle to late 1960's. I saw the Manhattans show @ the Uptown theater, in Philly when this song was out; they were phenominal. And I saw them recently @ the Philly Dell East. And they still put on a great show ! Here's to the ledgendary, Blue Lovette, Gerald Alston for all the great music; Thx. for the post.
Please post my favs, "Alone on New Years Eve", "This time of the Year" I have them on 33 but no turntable anymore. I've been a Manhattans fan since 66.
never heard this song until yesterday on Sirius Satellite radio! what a classic. I've listened to it many times since then! Never heard early Manhattans until now.
Does anyone remember "baby I need you?" I think it was flipside to 'follow your heart' .If anyone has it can you PLEASE post?? I can't find that anywhere. Thanks:)
@chico1250 Spent a lot of time in Wyandanch, knew a lot of girls there. Although I graduated from West Babylon High, I also went to Wyandanch High prom, with Debra Martin. Went to a lot of partys, also lived for a while on north 22nd street, hung out on Booker, Davidson, Mount ave...Yeah I know Wyandanch
This song definitely brings back memories of days past. House parties, blue lights in the basement and, most of all, good time. A tip of the hat and a smile to you all.
This definitely brings back some very good memories. House parties; blue lights in the basement; and, most of all, good times. A tip of the hat and a smile.
Absolutely my favorite by this historic group. The rat-tata, rat-tata is pure Shep and the Limelights on "Daddy's Home" and the Heartbeats on "You're a Thousand Miles Away".
Doesn't get much better than this. Another one of their classic soul sounds on Carnival, featuring the great lead of George Smith. Smooth harmonizing!

Each time this song comes up on my play list - I must listen to it about 10 times.
I had this song when I was in the 10th or 11th grade.
But, to hear it now and still appreciate the Doo-Wop - perfect 5 part harmony - knocks me out.
