The disorder a couple people have referred to is called "Dissociative Identity Disorder" in the DSM-IV. fizzgig1 is right on the point that it does require having several distinct personalities in the same individual. It's very rare- much rarer in real life than it is on TV, it's usually result of severe abuse in childhood.

Schitzophrenia is often confused with D.I.D. It's often hard to diagnose because in its beginning stages its mild, and the factors that bring forth both problems seem to be similar in regards to environment. A person with more than one personality would have sharp shifts that are noticeable and forgotten time lapses. A person with schitzophrenia seems to become confused at times of timesand suffer from episodes of delusions and extreme, disorienting creativity. Both would be common in prisons.
