  • guess this is also his best in a grandslam after the 1992 US open. 96 French with Chang comes close

  • Nadal & Djokovic would have NO CHANCE against Edberg.

His volleys are just WOW - out of this world.

I`ve never seen anybody volleying at this level -ever!!!

Even Sampras wasn´t that good at the net...

  • horrible!! you can't take Edberg out of the net!!! he is like a wall!!

  • Muster was a living nightmare to opponents. But never to Edberg.

  • He has to be the best volleyer in the game. ever! Fantastic stuff.

  • @Stormsearcher75 TRUE.

  • Muster looks like Bradley Cooper !!!

  • nadal = improved muster

roger = improved edberg (on the baseline because how the fuck can you improve edberg's net game?)

  • ya hez my favourite sportsman of all time, slightly ahead of Sachin Tendulkar and Liverpool Football Club.... Cheers Stefan..

  • Surprising result considering Muster had a solid back court game.

I would love to see a Nadal-Edberg match with modern equipment on the 90's grass.

  • He plays so elegant tennis!!!

  • his approach shots are amazing - don't see that in tennis these days

  • You know that you are old when you remember seeing this match live!!

  • Makes me all melancholy. Apart from his forehand,I've never seen anyone hit anny shot more beautifully than Edberg. I was never a fan of anyone like I was a fan of Edberg.

  • didnt muster win the french open in 1995?

  • I think Edberg would have done fine against Federer. Agassi was the ultimate nightmare for serve and volleyers, yet Edberg's record was fine against Agassi until he was about to retire. 95 edberg was very very far off from his fine form. Besides Federer's record against top notch serve and volleyer, especially likes of Rafter, is not so good. I do not think Federer's slice return would be much of a threat for Edberg.

  • I love this video!:) Noboby could play with more class og dignity than Edberg!:)

  • Truly a lost art.

  • Muster didn´t know how to play against service volley players.

  • Muster was always easy for Edberg, beat him 10 times, never lost.

  • Edberg´s volleys were more elegant than both Federer´s and Sampras´, I think. His low catch at 5:46 is pretty amazing.

  • If Federer is the King, Edberg is definitely the Angel.

  • Edberg was great.

  • Wonderful tennis from Edberg.

  • stefan's masterclass at te net.............

  • i think edberg would have taken nadal apart on a hard court. devastating serve and volley game.

  • woulda taken ur lover federer apart too, aggressive players always have, especially great players. He woulda taken him apart on grass

  • @quiet1234 i think mirka is his lover for the time being...you may have to take a number if the marriage goes sour.

edberg is a wonderful player on grass but i'm not sure he would have handled fed's speed of shot, devastating angles and superior serve. edberg had difficulty with agassi and andre is federer-lite. bad match up for the old swede.

  • Edberg's serve motion was the most perfect motion for the serve and volley game.

It allowed him to be right at half of the way to the net when the opponent was responding to the serve! Never get tired of seeing it!

  • Meanwhile wide frame racket came along, which helped baseliners and returner too much. Back when likes of edberg played, off-centered shots were punished. These days, they make winners off mis-hit shots from the baseline. Volleyers are technicians that force mishit shots before putting them away. These days, it is tough to do that. Overall, no more greater serve and vollyers. Of course, racket companies make huge sales off these sticks on steroids, so they are fine with it.

  • of course absolutely fucking brilliant but u forget one major thing. Wide frames werent as deadly as the new strings, even in the old frames these new strings give a shit load of control thats why shots why the worst hit shots still stay in "guys can take cave men swings at the ball"-- Roddick. they get away with too much, its one of the biggest reasons for federers dominance, He has always just put the ball back in to play and waited for errors when he gets outplayed

  • JimAsian1,

well it is a huge mess now. Ultimately what they tried was to stop big-serve wonders, which I agree they were making games really boring to watch. So they slowed the ball and court. But they realize that it does not really make much difference. What is the difference between 150 and 120 mph serve at T's in real matches? Not much.

  • RF R Hi, it doesn't make sense what they're trying to do. I mean they make the rackets more powerful, yet they try to slow the game down with bigger balls. Wouldn't it make more sense to stop

trying to make the rackets more powerful?

    Peace Respect

  • if you are being thrashed that badly, you've got to change up your game...muster must have been satisfied with his performance from the baseline.

come in, drop shot, use slice, anything but what you're doing.

  • Wow, I remember this match - I was there that night ! After all these years.. - Edberg made it look sooo easy - too easy

  • 7:03 shot is that a regular slice but no backswing?

  • they both have this weird moving before return of serve.

  • poor Muster, he never won a match against Edberg!

  • Ahah "beaten like a drum", I had never heard of that but that's too funny ..nothing to take away from Muster though, he was a great player.

  • Stefan Edberg won the Junior Grand Slam:)

  • Watching Edberg play here is like poetry in motion. Such a beautiful and artistic style of tennis that you just dont see any more. Amazing stuff from my favourite player of all time.

  • Thanks a lot for this clip. I have heard commentators (Drysdale, McEnroe) speak of Muster "getting beat like a drum" against Edberg, et voila!

  • this agressive tennis by edberg ...wow

  • great video - love Edberg soooo much. He is kinda like how I see all serve and volleyers - essentially a Jedi Knight who insists on using a one handed backhand and volleys. Anyone can use two hands and sit at the back of the court, it takes a Jedi to handle this kind of pressure play like he does.

Watching him makes me wonder why more people on and off the tour dont employ serve and volley tactics more often. it's just lethal.

  • its because they dont know how to, they are trained specifically for back court play, if a good serve volleyer comes along such as rafter, edberg etc they would wipe the floor with the majority of players out there atm.

  • No they cant technology is against them, it is just too phyiscally demanding, serve volley tennis is destructive on the body and even worse when serve volleyers have to play like endurance atheltes thanks to technology and change in balls and courts. guys stay back and they do half the work they used to.

  • waaaaaaaaat?

serve and volley is long term easier on the body it is easier once you get better at it, the reason no one is serve volley right noa is cuz 10 years ago everyone decided to start playing from the baseline

  • The courts are slower and balls are heavier and slightly bigger then before. :(

  • the ICEMAN! awesome edberg

  • million thanks mate for another out of this world volleying from the master.. i want more more :)
