  • Why did you do this whilst driving? Not very safe!

  • Saved ;p

Check out 'FastBreak' on our channel

The NBL is still inspiring it's fans; it's still alive : )

  • Yes but unfortunantly AFL is a prime sport in Australia and I don't think most aussies are into Basketball, Most true blue Aussies are into AFL and rugby because....

    I don't know I haven't lived here long enough....??

  • Come on you Austrailian basketball fans. Basketball in your country is dead. As an die hard american basketball fans I think your league is gay and fruity. I watched your PA intro for your final last year. Boys and girls?! That's so family like. Come on it needs to be more die hard okay!. Stupid family stuff. Anyways go Lakers!

  • @DanYanks Australians are like this with every entertainment now. Entertainment/sport is apparently only for children and "families". You are very lucky to have some smart, wealthy people in the USA who are not complete fucking idiots like here in Australia. No cheerleading here in Australia either etc. It's utterly retarded.

  • @Salsien

Yeah I don't know why that is the case but it's probably got something to do with the culture.

  • @Dimitri0809 Australia is a fucking nanny state for all whining bitches who can't handle freedom. I fucking hate this bitch of a country (that is the people and it's government). they are inbred faggots who have no respect for freedom.

  • You want to save the league then there is really only one way.

1/ Investigate forming an ASIAN super league, if Australia can take part we would gain a huge media market (China) which would make possible raising of the salary cap.

2/ Raise the salary cap so we can import some REAL TALENT as well as lure elite Aussies at College home. Even if this means we only end up with 2 or 3 teams in the league.

  • 3/ Connect the ABA/ABL with education opportunities through Universities, forming a league similar to US NCCA. Allowing players to be developed and educated. And also insuring that the nepotisim of association basketball plays no part in player selection.

4/ Get rid of the AIS - its a hub of elitism in sport

  • Basketball in Australia has reached the state it has because of 2 things.1/ Racism and envy of African American players. They want them here because they need them to win but at the same time they resent their natural ability and treat them as if they have an unfair advantage. Has anybody ever wondered why after 30+ years of these players having kids here, none except for CJ have played in the NBL or for Australia?.

  • 2/ Nepotisim at the association level that sees the kids from the right families get all the development opportunities, in front of those who might be more talented. The US system finds and develops talent regardless of family politics or issues of race and class. AUS ball by contrast is heavily political and protective. The end result is a boring came of sub-par athletes that nobody really wants to watch.

  • Only if more Aussies said it like you then we might have had a greater league.

The thing I can't stand is the amount of bitching players do on court. If half of them got their head in the bloody game instead of whining to the refs their skill level might improve and the crowd might actually enjoy watching.

  • Hey venue - I have seen the above going on since the late 80's & it still happens today. In QLD there are many young athletes of islander & indigenous backgrounds being excluded from elite basketball opportunities, in spite of being better athletes. Primarily because their families aren't on the clubs board or financially able to support the cost of rep basketball. These players given the shot would raise the bar of the sport here, but they get excluded all the time.

  • I am thinking about possibly trying out for an NBL team. does anybody know how good the league is and how high caliber is the league? I play Division 2 basketball in the United States right now and I want to play ball after im done and i know im not gonna be good enough for the NBA or anything. thanks!

  • NBL is about the equivalent standard of division one colege. There are a lot of former college players playing in the nbl who didnt cut NBA so it would be worth a shot :)

  • mate, can i give you some advice: don't record your 'brain dump' with a shaky little camera at an awful angle right under your chin whist driving. it's very hard to watch and listen comfortably. also a bit of editing to tighten it up, so you're not rambling or repeating. structure!

the thing about basketball in australia is there's a 'community', in as much as its still one of the most popular sports for young australians to play. the nbl has lost touch with this community, but its still there.

  • Just an idea... why doesn't the NBL forget about free-to-air TV coverage (and foxtel) and film all games live and stream them over the internet (Games could also be archived for later viewing). Each team has a pretty good website, combine that with live games and revenue from advertising and you've got a hope. Many people in Aus have broadband, and it's only going to get faster. The internet is the future of entertainment, the NBL should jump on board.

  • Or even develop something at the ABA level so ppl can watch players develop and follow them into the elite level of NBL

  • PS. Sorry, no free to air as well, ha ha,. Even the lawn bowls has free to air!!

  • NBL is dead, period. How many teams need to go into debt just to realise this? Kings, Bullets, Slingers have gone. Spirit, Taipans & the Hawks are about to. What will the playoff picture look like? If you have enough money to make it to the end of the season then you are in the play-offs it seems. We just don't have a Basketball culture in Australia any more unfortunately, it is no longer like the golden 90's.

  • bloody sad state of affairs. Just look at the AIS now. It seems the way to go now is to play footy long enought to get a shot in the NFL. sad.

  • The NBL fell apart when CEO Bill Palmer was sacked. Its too late for my team. I supported the Brisbane Bullets for 23yrs and no thanks to Eddie Groves we have no team. He marketed the game to 3yos & his girlfriend and not the schools. If the girls can get Free to Air TV Coverage, why not the men??? Even late at night. I saw the Bne Bullets in 1985 on ch10 after 11pm and I was hooked. Only 25% of Aussies have PayTV.

  • I played in NBL I hope they can get it together!!! Tee Wilson Wollongong Hawks-98-99 season!

  • nbl is good should put back on tv please free to air tv gwn win tv abc i buy it put money on it

  • I gave you a shout out in y NBL rant video.

    Check the video response.

  • too bad the people on BA board dont seem to be in touch enough to even look at things like this or other forums, they are more out of touch than politicians

  • They do have a look. And have a great LAUGH around the water cooler.

  • very good video great understanding of what the NBL needs to promote itself to the people of Australia.

  • this is what we need! if you are from the nbl board, watch this movie and start acting dumbasses

  • I remember meeting lots of Kings players at many different events, Dean Utoff,Bob Tuner (coach) Matt Neilson twice, Issac Burton (who was a really cool guy) and a few others who I can't recall.

  • Just to add I was a Kings fan and back when it was on after the late news I remember Kings games were on most of the time (for me)so I guess ch10 programmed the games to suit where it was being shown. When the NBL moved to ABC they'd hardly show Kings games so that was a big reason why I lost interest.

I remember going to a few Kings games in '94 and the entertainment center used to be packed and also the Kings were always doing stuff at schools etc.

  • I believe the downfall started way back when NBL and Ten parted ways.Growing up I remember watching games shown in prime time at like 8:30pm of Friday nights and then they got moved to late nights after the late news but I still would watch the games and Ten had that basketball show on Saturday hosted by Steve Carfino and Bill Woods. Then it was shown on ABC for a while and Foxtel but it became really confusing to know when games were even going to be on so I just gave up.

  • Well Said Buddy,

I am studying the Economics of Professional Sports at the moment and intend to write an assignment on this topic. If I come to any worthwhile conclusions I'll let you know!

  • AiRcAmErOn - You should interview Pete for the mag...

  • Yeah, totally agree....

  • Check out Hoopcity Magazine (not trying to spam), it's trying to help basketball in Australia.

  • Great video, I agree!
