The main problems with the French was that they didn't know how to make allies so they ended up with everyone killing them. Also they didn't know who the hell was their leaders. For example they had a massive rebellion to crush the monarchy, then straight after that Napoleon becomes emperor (dictator) which is the monarchy.

im a huge fan of total war but after i bought empire and installed it and it didnt work all was just white screen and cursor i dont know if i should buy any more total wars if im gonna spend $50 on a game that doesnt work

Nationalism is that every nationality (nationality as defined by having the same common culture, history, language etc.) should have there own sovereign nation-state. It is an idea that mostly has it´s roots in the Naponionic Wars. This was because the wars called apon patiotism of the soldier, and his devotion to defend the homeland which are key values of nationalism.
