my god strallen, in all respect, I couldn't think of a better orchestration for this song. The string writing is almost perfect in balance with the singing. To strip it down of any rhythm section and orchestral instruments heard in other places (exception of the harp) on this recording was perfect. Bravo, Mark Shaiman- great tune/ arrangement! (Harry wasn't so bad either :) )
First time in 16 years i've managed to listen to this song all the way through again! One my Dad's favorites that will forever remind me of him. For Dad. xx
A truly wonderful, insightful, painful hymn to every breaking heart that ever was - but I always feel that the slightly over-lush Nelson Riddle type orchestral soft-centre in this original version slightly denies the right for "Drifting" to become the absolute classic world-beater standard it should be and the one so many other people manage to do in their cover versions
This song absolutely makes me melt!!!! Sigh.....

I grew up with Carol Kidd's version. Very different , and I like both versions - one from the perpective of a man and the other, a woman.
Search for drifting carol kidd on youtube and enjoy
