This song was written by my father and Rudy Tombs in 1956. This cover was produced by my father as well with teenage Protege Beverly Ann Gibson. This is the beginning of that gospel sound in R&B. Song was produced in 1958.
I thought this was going to be a girl-group version of the Gene Pitney song of the same name. But this song must predate that one, to judge by how it sounds. Nothing in common except the titles, obviously.
Betty's was released as VeeJay 610 but did not chart on the Top 100 or R&B, which is very odd. Don't know the story behind the failure to chart. It came between "I Can't Hear You" and "Getting Mighty Crowded" - all from 1964.
And, of course, you know that Annie Laurie had the big hit with this in '57 on the R&B charts (only going to #61 on the Top 100 charts).
