  • Apollo Creed!

  • 1:40 the officer that blows his whistle and approaches Roy also plays as Lando Calrisan in Star Wars!!

  • Comment removed

  • @RTPye117 Actually, the soldier that talks to Richard Dreyfuss around 1:45 is Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies. Lando was played by Billy Dee Williams.

  • i saw this scene 1 time when they showed it in 1982 on hbo. it was a little over 2 hrs. the only full scene they did not show was Air East taxiing to the gates and the agent requesting the film and recorders from the passengers.

    great post

  • I always see Carl Weathers name on the credits list but I've never seen him before in the movie, thanks for the video :D

    Thumbs up

  • Carl Weathers.. !! (Or Wethers?) Predator/Happy Gilmore..

  • "the only bad air around here is you guys fartin' around..." hahaha, classic tough guy line!!

  • Carl Weathers. LOL Close encounters has link to Predator and Aliens - Lance Henriksen eventually in 30 years time a both these frenchise will cross over.

Just love it. A film about aliens eventually links with other alien films.

  • this film... great as it is... just makes me angry, based on... hes driving the complete opposite direction of where hes going... when hes going to moorcroft hes actually heading toward carlile... when they are going toward the tower and they make the left turn off the dirt road, they are going the opposite direction... i live there and it makes me laugh every time, and irritates me.

  • Carl Weathers...cool. I reckognised him at first as apollo creed form the rocky movies.

  • This movie is silly. Three fingered beings are suppose to be able to engineer these highly structured sophisticated space machines? Not with their frail bodies and lack of proper articulation due to having only three fingers and being built like a 7 year old. Also, if they're able to function in the same environment as humans, that means they must exist in the same environment , and there's no way these beings would survive.

  • @timcp1 If you had actually watched the movie, you wold have noticed that the aliens have 5 fingers.

Guess which finger I am pointing at you right now?

  • @timcp1 First of all...it's a movie, not a documentary. Second of all, who's to say the aliens didn't have telekinetic powers which they used to create their space machines OR maybe they came to Earth to harvest new SLAVES to build the craft for them. Third of all, why couldn't they live in or have the same environment? Were they examined by a biologist? FOURTH of all...I grew up with this movie and NEVER saw an alien with three fingers. I believe you're thinking of "War of the Worlds".

  • @shizukesa65 Of course it is a movie, but this movie is a result of Roswell events eye witness accounts etc. and placed in a fictional setting. Telekinetic powers, like something out of Fantasia? Where Mickey Mouse waves a wand and all the dishes clean the kitchen by themselves? If that is what you want to believe I guess. Weak bodied, fragile, aliens with elongated fingers whether 3 or 5 doesn't make sense, any slaves could easily resist.

  • @shizukesa65 And as for environment, if they were able to leave their ship and function in our environment, that means their environment would have to have the same physics. In which case, their fragile bodies and elongated fingers with lollipop head would not allow them to function in such an earth as ours. In any case I believe there are beings that far out perform the depicted aliens in every way imaginable. Check out the video: UFO's a Worldwide Control System.

  • This is what's missing from modern movies: thousands of extras crowding the frame.

  • This is all on my dvd. What was supposed to be lost?

  • dillon YOU SON OF A BITCH

  • i'd like to get a hd version. how can i do that to download

    thanks

  • NOTICE - on 12-12-2012 be at -----} 44.589N. The longitude is -104.696W at 012:00 hrs.

  • @JetRanger0007 the co ordinates in the film take you to denver airport...

  • In those days, blockbusters didn't come out every week. This was a great film from a great decade for films.

  • "the only bad air around here is you guys farting around!" - great line :)

  • i know he in the rocky movies and predator 1 and force 10 from navarone

  • Ha! It's Carl Weathers. (Did I spell that right?)

  • Wow, thanks for providing us with this! I've been wanting to see this lost footage for ages!

  • Hey, editing mistake! A 0:48 and 0:52 the same red car apears on different take. You welcome.

  • Remember that scene in the original movie. However the second time viewed also in a theater that part was cut out. Also the ending was different in the second one, showing Roy Neary going in to the space ship. I liked that ending better. I have the DVE but the part was not in the DVD I have.

  • I have the DVD should have read. Not the 30th anniversary DVD sorry to say.

  • I wouldn't buy a bird from the guy from deliverence! Hey, it's apollo creed! Cool! I remember that shot where they first see devil's tower very well! Very impressive on the big screen, and especially on a cinerama screen! of course it was only the middle section, but still! those screens were huge! I later went to devil's tower in the late eighties! That was very impressive! I still to this day have a rock I pulled off the side of this massive monolith (shhh, don't tell anyone!)!

  • looks like one of the cows was getting it on.

  • zeey belong here more zan wee...

  • Thanks for this!!!!

It's a shame that the truly original theatrical release will never be released. The blu-ray is close, but there are some differences.

  • I always miss the scene where the technician turns and yells right at the audience, "you tell Municipality were goin'to candle power in ten minutes!"

Haven't seen that since the original theatre release and some TV showings of it.

  • IIRC that particular scene (the power plant scene) is available on the Blu-Ray but is an add-on. I'll take a look at my copy tonight to confirm.

  • "It's just a rental, Officer!"

  • You can tell the music is John Williams and Boston Pops...good stuff. Spielberg prefers Williams to conduct music for his movies.

  • Carl Weathers of Rocky fame.

  • Spielberg is a master of suspense film making, no one builds up tension like he does in films. If aliens were to happen in reality, i imagine this is how it would be, and he gets it spot on how the government would react too. this is the kind of stuff they would do in terms of cover ups. its just a shame alien movies just arnt popular among the youth today, cus SFX is so groundbreaking now (TF) that some really epic alien sci-fi films could be made. (dont want to know bout Distict9)

  • What a film. So underrated!

  • Underrated? I believe this is considered a masterpiece pretty much everywhere. Right?

  • Oh of course! In my circle of friends, im the only one who understands this film. I honestly believe this to be spielbergs at his best - even though its a bit flawed. Beautiful.

  • @leon327 you are damn right !

  • @leon327 UNDERRATED??? HOW?? It is one of Steven Spielberg's biggest hits

  • Spielberg is a grand trickster. Watch for the real thing comming to a community near you. Just don't get on board.

  • lol 7:44 XD 'Farting around' lol they have their handy tanks ready to shoot anyone in the face >>

  • they didn't have GPS those days, like TOM-TOM

  • Wasn't the soldier from the movie 'Predator'?

  • Carl Weathers, also played Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies.

  • Ahh yes I see. But wasnt he in Predator too?

  • Yep.

  • whats the filming location?? His neighborhood?

  • epic movie. my fave scifi movie. i wanna be there when we make contact

  • to late

  • @kylkoneski Yeah, so we can unload machine guns on those gray alien bastards.

  • I loved this movie. I had a t-shirt with Close Encounters on the front and Star Wars in the back, ultimate nerd at 12, but I didn't care. I hated the special edition. The original is the best, always will be. Spielberg is a genius.

  • I always found it strange how they suddenly stop and climb the hill and see the mountain. I've been to Devil's Tower, it's surrounded by flat prarie land and you can see it from 30miles away.

  • its a movie

  • Wow, I didn't know Apollo Creed was a member of the National Gaurd! You learn something new everyday...........

  • Thanks for posting this.

It was so sad that they cut scenes from original the theatrical release- especially the extended version of Roy tearing apart the yard to make his model of Devil's Tower. Stupid Hollywood. :-p

  • That actor would be Carl Weathers. What is funny about that cut scene, is the fact that Carl Weathers continues to be credited in the movie even in versions of this movie where that particular scene has been cut. That explains only too much.

  • aww you know Apollo...I ain't lootin'. Mick would have my ass, ya'know. I'm just lookin' for this tower, dats all.

  • Thats about the best damn Rocky impression Ive heard anyone do in text! =)

    Thumbs up!

  • rednecks in india ?

  • Who the hell said that this is India? It's Wyoming!

  • OMG it's a movie... an old movie!

  • Actually thats not the scene that was lost thats in the movie, its the Dreyfuss with Carl weathers scene, where hes being threatened.

Unless youre crying FAKE at a movie...which your not...right?

  • No, it's definitely "lost" in that its not in every edition.

  • I'm no sure what you mean.

Actually, after reading my own comment I'm not sure what I mean either. =)

I've owned a few copies of Close Encounters and this scene, where everyones on top of the train, is in the movie as far as I know.

I could be wrong though, I'm not a serious fan.

BTW, there are 2 "e"s in Wookiee =P

  • What I mean is that I have the "Collector's Edition" and I'm pretty sure it cuts out the Carl Weathers portion of the scene.

As for "Wookiee," I realized that *after* I picked the name.

  • Oh okay I thought we were discussing this scene in particular.

And your name is fine, I think I wanted to point out my nerdiness in knowing how to actually spell it.

From one Star Wars lover to another, howdy! =)

  • Yes, I recognize the actor. It is Carl Weathers who played Apollo Creed in Rocky I-IV (after dying in Rocky IV). I too have wondered why this scene was cut from later versions. Then, what is weird, is Carl Weathers still ends up being credited in the movie even though this scene has been deleted. If anybody knows just let me know.

  • I so agree with you. I saw this when it first came out and I was 11 years old. I never had a movie affect me the way this one did.

  • It's a good movie. I was only a baby when it first came out, but I grew up with this Steven S. flick the same way like I've done w/ E.T. However, I remember E.T. only too well back in 1982.

  • OMG!! Appolo Creed is in this!

    1:46

  • I have a queston to all, I never saw this movie but i remember I saw about 10 years ago a very good alien movie too. I dont know the name but it starts like this : A group of people are in a truck in a wood on their way to hoome but they stopped when they saw blue light coming from the woods, 1 guy stepped out and I think he fanished at the bright lights after that you saw the guy was naked at the restaurant near it ..

Please hep me and tell what movie this is PLS

  • Kenanlambo, if the movie you're talking about came out around 1992/1993-ish, I think you're talking about FIRE IN THE SKY. Starring D.B. Sweeney and Robert Patrick.

  • I believe the movie you are referring to is called Fire in The Sky. The guy who played the kid in "ET" was in it. The movie was supposed to be based on a true story.

  • I missed the 77 release, but caught the

1980 rerelease at the age of 12. I left that

theatre so amazed, so moved that at that

moment I could not have put what I was feeling

into words. As I walked toward our car, I could not stop looking up at the stars above

my head. I am now 40yrs. old and I am still

to this day amazed how deeply this film

    touched me at that time.

  • You are so right! This film made such a tremendous impact on me as a kid. I saw it in 77 when I was 6. The whole film was a metaphysical awakening for me. The whole concept of communication with a higher intelligence being facillitated through music made me a musician. It is a deeply spiritual film. Very similar to 2001, but to me this film has more oomph! And the final meeting with 'Them" is deeply moving,

  • I'm also a musician and I saw this movie in 1977 at age 4... sconvolgente! (in italian)

  • I was too young in 1977 to remember such a thing. However, I too have grown up with this movie. I don't like how they removed a bunch of scenes from 1980's special edition. One who never saw the previous version would wonder how Richard Dreyfus' character got the material to build the sculpture. I guess, like it says, it was made just to show the inside of the ship. I could watch it over and over again. It was well made knowing it was not filmed in Indiana as it says and GOOD.

  • True. I was 14 in when the 77 feature landed and all fantasies went on "what did the main character see in the UFO"? 1980 came the solution: impressive, but the death to all my fantasies. Both moving and a pity at the same time.

  • Yep Carl Weathers

  • I was so annoyed by the glaring cuts made to the 1997 anniversary release that I had to go back and re-watch the ABC television broadcast I'd taped in the 80's.

  • I remember that broadcast. I had it on tape for many years until I recorded over it. On the ABC version, there were even more scenes which never made it on any of the theatrical prints. I did not like how they removed a bunch of stuff (i.e. Roy Neary throwing dirt, plants, and such through the kitchen window to make the sculpture, scenes from Devil's Tower, etc.) from 1980's "Special Edition" though.

  • I've never seen that part with,I think it's Carl Weathers, but I have the photo novelization with a picture of him or maybe it was one of the bubble gum cards, anyway thanks for posting.

  • For that time the interior of the mother ship looked great, but I always like more the original theatrical version. May be the 30 aniversary edition on dvd gonna have all this goodies.

  • Yes the 30th anniversary DVD does have "all the goodies", I just saw the package here in Australia. Send me US$ 60.00 and I will post it to you LOL :)
