Anyone realize that THX 1138 is star wars version of earth there was a novel meant to come out to explain that people from this version of earth ended up in the star wars galaxy and populated it with humans hence humans are not native to the star wars galaxy.
I wonder why the workers need to be told what to do in a job they presumably have done for years, perhaps here the film is saying even peoples inner voice that guides them through tasks has been replaced by the state?
@sequence130 Because they are monitoring all the time, everyone, to make sure they are taking there daily drugs and for other common offenses. Once THX screws up a bit here then they start to monitor him more closely and that's how is gets found out.
They do this scene so, so right. The radiation rods are creepy, the magnum-cell chatter is so surprisingly tense, the corporate chatter wonderfully detached...

At last here's a technology that has useful real world applications. Wouldn't it be just fantastic to mindlock folks just at point when you know they're going to piss you off. And you can also get some lefts and rights in retaliation free as a bonus.
@James25H It's about an underground society in the near future (the surface is presumed to be a wasteland) ruled by order. People are dehumanized and aren't allowed to have a sense of identity. They're allowed to watch holographic porn but aren't allowed to form natural loving relationships with each other because, since individuality is outlawed, everyone is an expendable cog in the machinery of society. In George Lucas's words, "society itself is the prison."
I remember watching this scene with GL's commentary. The bureaucracy almost causes a disaster through the application of its own convoluted rules. Then they deny responsibility for it. Then they use THX as a scapegoat even though they put him in that situation to begin with.
Yo! this isnt something that is coincidental. THX 1138 mindlock....Lucas has used the THX at the begining of all his movies, That is a mindlock! THX sound design??? wave frequency inputting data???
PS: Dont bother replying if your just going to say "Its just a film, jeez, paranoid"
THINK ABOUT IT, the amount of drugs prescribed, medication, The Phantom Menice and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Freedom are being turned into VIOLATION!
Unlike Star Wars, a lot of the changes in the Director's Cut of THX actually improved the film. In this scene, the eyes rolling into the back of his head is extremely effective.
THX-1138 is more comon than you think. What cell block was princess Liegha in? THX-1138 (Star Wars Ep:4) A battledroid in in Star Wars was unit THX 1138 the cerial number you see on the flying wing in Indiana Jones is THX 1138. A licence plate in American Graffiti reads THX 1138. The theory is is that THX 1138 was once George Lucas's phone number.
@WarGamerHistorian I love that theory. Poetry. A man trying to connect with the world through film connects with the world through film and ultimately seals himself off from the world. Through film.
The weird, fascinating atmosphere of this movie shows that George Lucas had something special as a young director than lost his touch when Star Wars episodes 1-3 came around. I'm not sure why.
Everyone has that raw talent in their youth, most artists in any profession usually turn out their best work, in early stages of their carrer. This film was Lucas saying to the studios, I've got something different to offer.
Money. He was already incredibly rich before he started production on Episodes 1-3, but he knew he could make movies which would make a new generation of kids buy action figures and merchandise for billions.
1) THX's eyes rolling back is an added effect. In the original, he was simply staring straight ahead.
2) The radioisotope he's manipulating is glowing orange and burning through everything in the new version - in the original movie, it was just a tiny grey capsule that just... sat there... when it was dropped. It's still apparently dangerously radioactive, but there's absolutely no /visual/ aid to indicate that in the original version.
The Director's cut is a better version indeed. I hope George Lucas won't resort changing many things like he did in the original Star Wars trilogy. The original THX was supposed to be 5 minutes longer but he was forced to cut some scenes out. In the Director's Cut, Lucas was free to add them.
I saw the new version of THX 1138 in a theater. I agree that while I don't mind the new footage in this scene, some of the modifications George made to the movie are just annoying. If you want the original version then get a VHS of it.
I can't wait till the digitally remastered bluray edition comes out, including wacky new characters such as Cutesy Wootsey the wise cracking beaver from Planet Shitsmeoff.
How can you say the new version is ridiculous when you don't even have the original? Please people, watch the original first, then voice your opinion! You'd be surprised and will appreciate the effort Lucas has put into the new version.
The lead character is attempting to insert a radioactive element in a robot when it is noticed he is "suffering" from insufficient drug intake. This automatically leads to him being paralyzed (or "mindlocked") so he can be arrested, but the attempt almost results in an industrial disaster because, being paralyzed, he cannot handle the radioactive element. The mindlock is stopped in time to avoid the disaster.
I thought they'd just added a few CGI bits but this scene has been cut very differently to the original. And not only adding things but deleting little bits here and there. eg. at 2.10 the original dialogue has the conflicting orders coming through 'Hold, hold' 'Proceed'. In this version we lose the 'Proceed'. Ugh. It wouldn't have been too hard to release the original version on the same DVD.
I bet Lucas waits a few years, until everyone has bought this CGI version, and then releases the theatrical version of THX 1138 on DVD as "The classic original version", just like he did with Star Wars!
cgi wasn't out yet, plus cgi expanded directors ability to develop a story, how could you say anything bad about a man who revolutionized the film industry with cutting edge graphics and sound

There's a good bit of CGI in this scene.
1) THX's eyes rolling back is an added effect. In the original, he was simply staring straight ahead.
2) The radioisotope he's manipulating is glowing orange and burning through everything in the new version - in the original movie, it was just a tiny grey capsule that just... sat there... when it was dropped.
