I still remember Friday nights we'd sing this song back at Camp Ceder Lake. When I was there it was the late 70s. So long ago, but I remember this song - I always loved it.
This is beautiful. I am not Jewish, I'm Christian actually, but in university I had the opportunity to go to synagogue with some of my classmates. We sang this song, and it was one of my favorites; when I got home I wrote down the title so I could remember it, then looked up the meaning of the Hebrew lyrics, but I have not heard the song since then. Thank you so much for posting this so I could hear the song in full. Wonderful words and lyrics, and great performance.
Imagine my surprise, after learning this melody from Cantor Perryne Anker (also from Chicago) and many years of singing it with my congregation, to find it was co-written and "popularized" by my AZA brother, Jeffrey Klepper.
Yasher Koach, my friend.
And delighted to see the 12-string is still your "instrument of choice" 4 decades later!

I sang with the Zamir Chorale in New York, back in 1983. There was another melody to Shalom Rav that we sang that year, and for a moment I thought this was that one - which I've always wanted to hear again. But then I realized that this is the Jeff Klepper melody - which I also like, and have heard a lot in recent years.
I sure wish I could find a recording of that other Shalom Rav that we sang in '83, though.

Here's the Shalom Rav video that we spoke about at Rosh Hashana. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Yes, the guy on the right, with the guitar, is Jeff Klepper. The other soloist Rabbi Dan Freelander, who wrote the melody together with Jeff.

Umm, wow. Came across this by accident, but one of the most lovely recitations of Shalom Rav I've ever heard.

absolutely beautiful -- could listen to it again and again and still not tire of it!

The song was written on and for the guitar. It was a staple song at URJ Kutz camp in the late 70s and early 80s

That's probably Ben Steinberg's Shalom Rav. I think it's been recorded by Transcontinental Publications.
