great interview, good questions, so interesting to hear about things from this director's perspective. It's about time Tom Hooper got the recognition he deserves, keep up the good work, WTF!
He probably had some good comments, but all his stuttering made it hard to listen to him talk. Just about every 3-6th word he stuttered. Perhaps he made this film as a reflection of his own personal struggles with speaking.
Well, for Mr. Hooper to say "everyone" knows Obama cares is really offensive to me. This is a man who has kept our illegitimate wars going and has recently started a brand new one. I guess Mr. Hooper doesn't "connect" with this sort of issue. What's the big deal about a few illegitimate wars when you live in lala movieland.
This man is a wonderful director, but if he thinks Obama is genuinely and passionately connected to the issues he is completely inept at reading people. Obama is a vapid teleprompter reader. How obvious does it have to be? Tom Hooper wears rose colored glasses.

Its a FUCKING DISGRACE that an amateur like Hooper WINS AN OSCAR when a genius like Nolan not even gets a nomination. OSCARS ARE A BUNCH OF RETARDED FUCKHEADS!
Great interview. As a film buff (64) to listen to a young eloquent film maker with such achievements, also talking to his links to those who inspired him. I liked the reference to Barry Lyndon, which is a very under rated movie. What do he think about Dr Strangelove, one of my great favorites. I really look forward to what is next in this young mans career. Its great when you see this kind of success, with real SUBSTANCE.
This such a treat however I need to see the movie first this discussion is a bit too much and premature imo for me...at this point. I shall return! thanks WTF!!!!!:)
Good interview Kim. When you guys can afford a second camera, would be great to see the interviewer while they ask a question! Sometimes sounds a bit distant.
@jakobdrewaut thanks! I plan on using two cameras more in the future. I actually had two cameras with me for this interview but wasn't able to use one of them since we were in the lobby of a hotel and they actually thought i'd just be using a flipcam.
I'm glad to see WTF expanding their coverage like this. You guys are serious film buffs and thinkers, unlike the poseurs and idiots that make up the majority of that business.
I think Tom Hooper is dead wrong, leaders where always the same. In the time of feudalism the king had to be a good speaker and relateble, too. Not to the common man, because they had no power, but to the lords and the other nobility.
So no leader didn't change. A stuttering leader would have been unsuccessful through out the ages in every culture.
Having studied Latin American history, and having some knowledge of monarchs and how they operate. Your half right. Speaking was definitely important maybe until the rise of the favorites. Where executive powers were delegated to trusted advisors. This happen when the feudal contractualism was on the decline. There have been plenty of monarchs who avoided public engagements in favor of more nuts and bolts of running an empire.
Sounds plausible, but I think it's just a shifting of the problem, now the kings trusted advisors had to be good with people, my point was, being a good speaker, good at communicating and manipulating peoples emotions was part of politics, even before we were humans.
This didn't come up with the media age the media is actually pretty unimportant in the picture, this came up with the shift of power to the people, which then triggered the media age.
Both him and James Cameron won the Oscar. Spooky...
