Thanks mate, but way too fast. I didn't get what you were saying about inversing the black mask. Something todo with ctrl +I ? Thanks for taking the time anyway.
I appreciate you taking the time to make this tutorial, but as many have said you need to slow down and concentrate on the "simple" use of layer/vector masks. wayyyy too much information for a tutorial.
"And I'm going to name it crazy sheep" I love your accent man. Thank you very much for the video, cleared up a lot of questions I had about the masks :)
Maybe someone can explain their uses for this. I've been working with Photoshop since I knew how to use a computer. I've never found the need to use masks at all. Anything that I've ever needed to do (including what he's showing us in this video), I've been able to do with multiple layers...and it keeps you from making mistakes.
Can anyone tell me anything that can only be done with a mask?...because I haven't found it yet.
@drumguyrobc Ha ha. I'm completely with you on this one. I'm freelance and this tutorial feels alien to me. Always found that using Digital mediums are enough of a shortcut and that unless you're on a tight deadline, you're only cheating yourself with actual hand/ eye skill. Personal preferance here, but yeah.
No different to when you get bands that just HAVE to make a wall of sound with distortion but it's completely unnecessary more often than not
@drumguyrobc Oh, yeah, other than goin through After Effects or Flash, I can't see the need myself... This may not make sense if the first part didn't get sent to you... Sorry, I'm Insomniac. Ha
@drumguyrobc The man just said, you could erase something, but it will still be there. So for example you want to hide something behind an object, you could use layer masks instead of the eraser. If you make a mistake with the eraser and realize that further along the process, there`s no going back. It`s like a safe erase.
I did something wrong! When I use black color (not gray) in the vector mask, and I use the brush in the picture, it's only a lil transparant! I need to click several times to brush the picture away? Anyone knows this problem? Thnx!
can anybody tell me why when i want to use mask to change hair color or eyes instead of changing hair/eyes color i change everything outside the mask and hair/eyes stay the same?!? please help! :(((
@p0k0r0 I almost didnt view this tutorial. I always read the video responses. To see if the videos are worth watching. The previous video had all kinds of responses on how the vido sucked. Cus it was only 13 seconds. Till I read your post. Thanks! I actually subscribed. Tutvideos has some of the best explained tutorials. !
No offense, but I've been using Pshop forever and you managed to confuse ME with this video. If you want to show people how/why to use something, here are some tips: 1) NEVER forget what it was like to be new. Talk to that person. 2)don't talk so fast 3)Use Real examples. The big black circle and other shapes you used would make no sense to someone new to masks. I think I'll do a vid on it and try to clear things up a bit.
Is there any advantage to using a mask instead of just duplicating a layer? For example: If i was retouching a face, i'd duplicate the layer and apply a blur filter, then erase over bit i didnt want blurred allowing the original (non-blurred) layer to show through. That seems to be the same as applying a mask, the only diff being that with a mask u use a brush rather than an eraser.
when erased you cant get it back. with a mask you can add things you masked easily. with a duplicate layer, you would have to start over just to add 1 pixel.
Picture you apply a blur filter on an image and you dont apply a mask to it to get rid of the effect at certain spots in the picture. you are working on your blur filter applied image. you will need to use your eraser tool to get rid if it which is going to destruct your image. if you use a mask you dont destruct your image and you can simply redo things by switching the color from black to white to revael the effect again. ;)

Cool guide. I only wanted to know how to do clipping masks, but I learnt more.
For future reference, don't use the black circle to teach bitmap layer masks. It got a little confusing when you did the black to white ramp gradient on it in the mask. Next time use a coloured circle.

You lost me half way through (with the vector masks). From that point on I wasn't sure what you meant (like with the paths bit - I don't even know what a path is).
Thanks for the video though, the one on curves was very useful. I use a curves mask to adjust all my images.
You should have done this tutorial on useful ways to use the masks...people would understand better if you showed them reasons why to use the mask.....watching a black circle disappear and reappear is not only boring, but pointless...
the video is okay, and I know masks are important, but you should have made the tutorial more useful...
He talks fast, but personally, I understood everything he said. And masks are not that difficult to understand, just look around some website if you didn't understand.
So, basically, bitmap and layer mask are synonyms ? and they work the same way as 'alpha channel' when texturing on a 3d model.
Pretty good video, but if you make a mistake then take it out of the video. The amount of times you correct yourself on the video just makes the whole thing confusing, especially when you start confusing Vector and Layer Masks.

Can't see the point... masks seem to be completly useless.
