  • Surprise! I quickly upgrade the Photoshop technology tips Web site: pss.nn.cx

  • Someone likes to listen to himself talking.

  • I'm having trouble with making vector masks and curving the lines with the pen tool. Know where I can find a tutorial to explain it more?

  • Great video!

    really helpful...thanks!!

  • You idiot viewers the resolution he set it to was a the default Youtube resolution, but is meant for full screen. otherwise it would be widescreen

  • Me too, I do not know much about masking, but I guess it acts just like a mask.

  • I still have no idea what a mask is used for?

  • Sweetie, you are the bomb...

Nearly a year of watching videos and walking away totally confused And Then

    Came You!!!

    Thanks so much for sharing.

  • Thanks a ton.

  • CHECK OUT MINE : /watch?v=01I1gMpoe_w

  • 1 in 50 of these videos do I actually "get" and understand and do correctly grrrrrrr

  • Omfg i cant watch ur tuto , ur voice is so fucking funny for me ... well great job xDD

  • One of my most favorite channels ever....tutvid

  • Too fast, confusing, too much talking, not applicable examples.

  • great tutorial !

but you need to take a deeeep breath and slow down !

  • Thanks mate, but way too fast. I didn't get what you were saying about inversing the black mask. Something todo with ctrl +I ? Thanks for taking the time anyway.

  • Perfect tutorial

  • Thanks for taking the time! Always grateful for people willing to help for free!!! Best wishes to you.

  • Is anyone else tired of all that talking..?

    Show more, talk less!

  • I appreciate you taking the time to make this tutorial, but as many have said you need to slow down and concentrate on the "simple" use of layer/vector masks. wayyyy too much information for a tutorial.

  • someone please count how many times he says masks in this video

  • Confusing at moments when i was not using the FILL function ... but i learned alot :D... im a newbie photoshop person

  • What screen recorder is this?

  • Thanks, learnt a few tricks with masking. PS is like a treasure box, you never really know what you can get till someone show you.

  • You do realize you are talking too fast right for this lesson right?

  • Maybe if u were talkin` slower this could be usefull.

  • Thanks

  • great video, learned a thing or two, i think that could be use full.. :)

  • WASTE OF TIME WHY DONT YOU DONT YOU MASK OUT THE TREES OR THE ROCKS WHAT IS WITH THE DANG SHAPES WHY DO YOU HAVE A PHOTO OF A BEACH!!!!!!! AHHHHHH

  • Very clear! Thanks!

  • Io can't select my layer masks after 've deseected them. pease hep!

  • "And I'm going to name it crazy sheep" I love your accent man. Thank you very much for the video, cleared up a lot of questions I had about the masks :)

  • thanks bro! :)

  • best tut's on youtube!

  • Thank you! It was comprehensive. Need to rewatch it later to process the whole thing, though XD

  • fast talking award...wooooo boy

  • nice post

  • Maybe someone can explain their uses for this. I've been working with Photoshop since I knew how to use a computer. I've never found the need to use masks at all. Anything that I've ever needed to do (including what he's showing us in this video), I've been able to do with multiple layers...and it keeps you from making mistakes.

Can anyone tell me anything that can only be done with a mask?...because I haven't found it yet.

  • @drumguyrobc Ha ha. I'm completely with you on this one. I'm freelance and this tutorial feels alien to me. Always found that using Digital mediums are enough of a shortcut and that unless you're on a tight deadline, you're only cheating yourself with actual hand/ eye skill. Personal preferance here, but yeah.

No different to when you get bands that just HAVE to make a wall of sound with distortion but it's completely unnecessary more often than not

  • @drumguyrobc Oh, yeah, other than goin through After Effects or Flash, I can't see the need myself... This may not make sense if the first part didn't get sent to you... Sorry, I'm Insomniac. Ha

  • @drumguyrobc The man just said, you could erase something, but it will still be there. So for example you want to hide something behind an object, you could use layer masks instead of the eraser. If you make a mistake with the eraser and realize that further along the process, there`s no going back. It`s like a safe erase.

  • hes talking way to fast

  • Great info and tutorial. Now I got a clear idea of what masks are about. Thanks a bundle

  • great tutorial, been doing photoshop for a while and always wondered bout masks! learned some great stuff thanks!

  • Great, but blurry. Could you please add some clarity to the output?

  • woo this helped :D

  • then why did you watch this?

  • I did something wrong! When I use black color (not gray) in the vector mask, and I use the brush in the picture, it's only a lil transparant! I need to click several times to brush the picture away? Anyone knows this problem? Thnx!

(By the way, the video is only 13 sec.)

  • wtf?

  • 13 seconds of ass!

  • i dont get it? why did everyone thumbs up u ? :S

  • @bloodykizzy i think i said this because his first video was 13 seconds long LOL.

  • HELP!!!

can anybody tell me why when i want to use mask to change hair color or eyes instead of changing hair/eyes color i change everything outside the mask and hair/eyes stay the same?!? please help! :(((

  • accidentally clicked a negative on your comment, sorry!

  • after you select all click on invert.. and then u can change color..

  • oh its cause your retarded.

jk lol im not good at photoshop

  • Comment removed

  • Noow I`m REALLY confused :-(

  • i want to know ho he is!

  • how do i turn this vector mask off, everytime i start a new layer and put an object, the vecter mask always shows up ????? whats going on ???

  • just turn off high qualit

  • you sound like chris o'donell. your tutorials are the best on photoshop

  • You Idiot Viewers ! turn off the High Quality mode to see the full video ... ^^,.

  • @p0k0r0 I almost didnt view this tutorial. I always read the video responses. To see if the videos are worth watching. The previous video had all kinds of responses on how the vido sucked. Cus it was only 13 seconds. Till I read your post. Thanks! I actually subscribed. Tutvideos has some of the best explained tutorials. !

  • 13 Seconds ???????

  • same here!

but where gonna start the view point with sombodey! LOOOOOOL!!!!!!

  • I'm only getting 13 seconds of video. Somebody made off with the rest!

  • It was Bernie.

  • 13 seconds long lmao

  • you need to watch it in HD to see the full video

  • o thanks buddy

  • Love your tutorials! Learnt a lot from you bro. THANKS!

  • this video was way to long..

you need to stay focused on the subject and stop talking so much..

i couldn't watch the whole video because i fell asleep

  • ahaha me too i was almost sleeping :D

  • Too much talking, at times I got confused. How about showing us some helpfull uses for masks?

  • Thanks :)

  • I couldn't listen to all of his talking to get through the whole thing.... so I'm back to looking for another video....

  • You said earlier in the video that you can retreive the original pixels years later.

Is this still possible if you save your file to a 24 bit bitmap? Doesn't Photoshop save the mask in the Alpha Channel?

A 24 bitmap file doesn't have an Alpha Channel.

  • thanks

  • I did learn a few things, I'm a newbie and very visual...Seems like there should be less talk more showing...Thanks

  • No offense, but I've been using Pshop forever and you managed to confuse ME with this video. If you want to show people how/why to use something, here are some tips: 1) NEVER forget what it was like to be new. Talk to that person. 2)don't talk so fast 3)Use Real examples. The big black circle and other shapes you used would make no sense to someone new to masks. I think I'll do a vid on it and try to clear things up a bit.

  • how could u make a 21 min video on íyoutube?

  • must become a reporter status.

  • wrong. it's because he is a partner

  • Partner status, I stand corrected. lmao

  • does anyone know how many times he said MASK.....?! xD (i lost my count after 374)

  • Very nice tutorial

  • Is there any advantage to using a mask instead of just duplicating a layer? For example: If i was retouching a face, i'd duplicate the layer and apply a blur filter, then erase over bit i didnt want blurred allowing the original (non-blurred) layer to show through. That seems to be the same as applying a mask, the only diff being that with a mask u use a brush rather than an eraser.

If that's retarded, please explain why!

  • when erased you cant get it back. with a mask you can add things you masked easily. with a duplicate layer, you would have to start over just to add 1 pixel.

  • how the fuck do u upload a 22 min vid??? i use beta..is that why????

  • say masks one more time

  • But i still don't know why you'd need to use one.

  • Picture you apply a blur filter on an image and you dont apply a mask to it to get rid of the effect at certain spots in the picture. you are working on your blur filter applied image. you will need to use your eraser tool to get rid if it which is going to destruct your image. if you use a mask you dont destruct your image and you can simply redo things by switching the color from black to white to revael the effect again. ;)

  • well thanks [:

i always just did that by making a copy layer of the things i didnt want blurred lol

  • Nice video :D helpfull. - masks, masks, masks, masks, and masks. :D!

  • very helpful for people who want to know what masks are about

  • what practical applications do these masks have? can someone give me an example where you would use them?

  • Too much information for the beginner and confuses or "masks" more than reveals.

    Try again.

  • I HAVE CS 4 AND I CANT FOLLOW ANY OF THIS. none of the options matches what youre saying.

  • almost every single bit of this is exactly the same

  • THX

    GREAT TUTORIAL

  • I'm in love with TUTVID! Awesome teacher.

  • Thank you for this great video

it is realy great thank you

  • cool tutorial, really good! But honestly what am i supposed to do with these masks...where am i supposed to apply them? any advice guys? :)

  • I agree on great Tutorial, and also on their applications. I fell like this could all be accomplished with regular layers.

    Correct me if i'm wrong.

  • Another amazing tutorial - thanks for that! =D

  • great style of teaching x)))))

    very funny

  • Nice stuff, 5/5

lolz, i was so proud of myself coz i knew how to use clipping masks b4 this vid,

  • 4:58 - 5:06

    brightness/contrast of mask

i followed the video exactly. nd when i get up to this point, my mask (and thumbnail of mask does not turn gray at all). it is selected and everything. i did exactly what he did. what is the problem.

    im using photoshop cs3 extnded.

    please help.

  • hey.. whan i use quick mask.. i select everything exept selected.. Freeze mask shit.. help me please...reply comment!

  • select the rectangle option, right click your picture > select inverse or something :P lol

  • nice... great!!!!thanks dude... keep posting great stuffs

  • Thanks for posting this video.

  • Cool guide. I only wanted to know how to do clipping masks, but I learnt more.

For future reference, don't use the black circle to teach bitmap layer masks. It got a little confusing when you did the black to white ramp gradient on it in the mask. Next time use a coloured circle.

    I'm only nitpicking though, thanks.

  • Thanks very much for this very "hands on", practical guide, man!!

  • how do i get rid of my vector mask image on the layers pallette?.. as soon as i open my new document i and draw a circle , by default it features a vector mask and i have been struggling to get rid of it..i must have checked something somewhere..pls help. thank you.

  • you have a generous way of rendering your teaching skills...nice quality. ..and yes Black reveals!..LOL.. Pls. make sure you have a water next to you..i can sense the dryness in your throat as you teach...

  • Thanks you answered a huge question I've had forever about image adjustments. I couldn't figure out why everything was changing in my collage. Because I was change the layers adjustments

  • your tutorials are the best I have found online, you don't assume know-how, that's the key.

  • Good tutorials, but you could do it in half the time.

  • THANK YOU!

  • And again very helpfull. Thanks a lot!

  • Very nice tutorial, thx.

  • great tutorial, so black reveals??? lol

  • I think I'm getting a head-ache watching this.

  • Black CONCEALS White REVEALS - I think is the term you were looking for. ;)

    Great tutorial.

  • If you dont want his help then dont watch it and stop complaining!

  • you are such a helpful human being, i apreciate your teachings i`ll always give you credit for that

  • great tut, but you really could do it in half the time.

  • A really great tutorial, I wasn't familiar with vector and clipping masks, Muchas gracias!

  • very awesome thanks

  • your photoshop tutorials are the best! i can't believe people complain about something you do as a favor.

I couldn't do the brightness/contrast thing you did on the layer mask. is there a different way to do this in cs3?

  • you talk too much..but it helps

  • wow ur so great and ur info is so detailed... thank you so much = )

  • stop talking at the start! good lord.

  • Ive been using photoshop for a long time, but i never really used mask, ty for the tuts

  • Ive been using photoshop for a long time, but i never really used mask, ty for the tuts

  • how would you go about posterizing a single layer? Everytime I posterize its applied to the entire image.

    ???

  • good job i must say with stupid people with stupid comments .if they were paying for it they would have been very happy .free stuff is hard to digest i guess.....lol.........hey just KEEP IT UP ........

  • For years I've been confuse on how masks works. I'm glad I stumble on this tutorial. I understand now. Thank you. Keep it up.

  • Thanks for the video. However, it was unclear as to what you were doing. Were you just giving possibilities of a mask or were you actually doing a project to illustrate a point. I don't know masking so I'm not sure that this is for me. Thanks for putting it out there though.

  • Thanks a lot, this is just what i wanted to know!!!

  • I don't understand why you have to use the black ellipse?

  • you dont HAVE to it was just an example

  • Great vid Vector masking will solve my problem

  • now that we've seen what they do id like to know how they can be used. good tut =)

  • You lost me half way through (with the vector masks). From that point on I wasn't sure what you meant (like with the paths bit - I don't even know what a path is).

Thanks for the video though, the one on curves was very useful. I use a curves mask to adjust all my images.

  • Nice work! Come check us out sometime :D

  • spanish!!

    u.u..

    (:

  • you are the best tutorialist on the web. Thanks a lot. I understood everything perfectly.

  • man this is the best vector tutorial i've seen, all the others just go so fast i dnt know whats going on thanx allot

  • i am not kidding at all: i started using these techniques BEFORE I FINISHED WATCHING THE VIDEO! (Pardon my excited caps.)

Non-destructive editing of images is so brilliant - i hate that i didn't start this sooner! My PS file sizes are even smaller!

  • You should have done this tutorial on useful ways to use the masks...people would understand better if you showed them reasons why to use the mask.....watching a black circle disappear and reappear is not only boring, but pointless...

the video is okay, and I know masks are important, but you should have made the tutorial more useful...

    good luck with future videos.

    ~peace~

  • Great!!

  • seriously, can you get to the point? You talk too much in between.

  • he was trying to say "word 'mask'"

  • how many times did u say the world "mask"?

  • Great video man! Keep up the good job!

  • He talks fast, but personally, I understood everything he said. And masks are not that difficult to understand, just look around some website if you didn't understand.

So, basically, bitmap and layer mask are synonyms ? and they work the same way as 'alpha channel' when texturing on a 3d model.

  • You talk too fast...and sometimes slur a bit too much...it gets hard to understand you...

  • you making it more harder to understand ,I'm gonna cry ;(

  • Pretty good video, but if you make a mistake then take it out of the video. The amount of times you correct yourself on the video just makes the whole thing confusing, especially when you start confusing Vector and Layer Masks.

  • Can't see the point... masks seem to be completly useless.

  • great work :)

  • hey does this work for photshop elements b/c im having a hell of a time the toolpalet isnt like the one u show can i get it like that??

  • meh. I hate masks. haha

  • you are great ^^ =) 5*
