Nice work bro! Are you still getting new PRs on this workout? I've been getting new PRs for 3 months after using this method but now my reps have gone down by a lot since springbreak. What do you do when your not progressing like planned?
@lllogical Thanks man. I followed 531 for more or less 7 months with a couple of resets and did very reasonable gains. (1RM) DL +15kg, SQ +20kg, BP +12,5kg, MP +15kg. I started to break down due to a busy competition-schedule last year though, which resulted in injuries. So I had to cut way back on the volume and apply some other training principles. When I stalled I usually reset the program. I have been experimenting a lot. I tried to raise the volume from cycle to cycle in order to force
@lllogical my body to adapt. But I went a little to far. In the final cycles I was close to a total work volume of around 100 metric tonnes a week. Which is a lot for a almost 30 year old who doesn't train for a living. Recovery was hard and I usually trained when I was beat up, battered and bruised.
@SMSBJM1981 I agree with you to the full extent of the phrase. 5/3/1 has revolutionized my training and my progression curve. If this is slow progress, I'll choose this over rapid progress any day of the week. I have never developed this rapidly before. Being on my 7th cycle this year, I am now confident that I will continue with this program as long as it takes me towards my goals.
@elohim666 You said it, the best part about it is that one can shut their brain off and be confident they will progress. I love to look ahead and see that if I train consistently and eat as I should I will be lifting X-amount of weight down the road.
@SMSBJM1981 I am an analytical person and i use the triumvirate approach for my assistance work. I.e. my assistance work template changes approximately every two cycles. I like the approach of steady and fixed increments in the main lifts instead of percentage based increments, as the program progresses, a percentage based approach would be very hard for an advanced lifter. Jim is a smart man.
You have a stronger deadlift than I, but may I humbly suggest that you work on locking out your hips more on the deadlifts? If you are currently in the habit of not locking them out, doing so will help you get your glutes involved in the deadlift more.
Anyway, keep up the great work. I'm in the 3rd week of 5/3/1 myself.
Yeah, I'm working on the issue. When I go all out on a set, each rep usually gets a little sloppy. When I pull singles in a meet or in training, I make sure to lock out. But anyhow, thanks for the heads up.
You are one strong mofo.
What is this song? It is awesome.

Just wondering about the 5/3/1 program. For the four main lifts, do you rep until failure for each set or do you follow Wendler's guidelines?
MrAsianGinger 9 months ago
@MrAsianGinger when i did 531 i tried to not fail in the main lifts. Failing during training is something you shouldn't do.
elohim666 9 months ago
@MrAsianGinger
you're only supposed to go to sub-failure in the last set of each exercise.

What!? No curls, this program sucks. JK, great work. 5 3 1 is awesome. I wish I had it when I started lifting.
