Side question. I thinking of replacing my MIM Strat with prewired seymour duncan ssl-1 set. Can I take the bridge ssl-1 out and put ssl-5 or is that going screw up the rest of deal?
@PrsFenderJackson1980 inquire to the person selling you the set about how that may effect the ratio of the output for the whole pickup set, often time ssH configs are calibrated for a good output ratio so one pickup doesnt stand out too much or too little in a blend. i dont know for certain though so ask around, and definetly ask the seller. hope this helped.
you're right, it's a sloppy cover...but i rated you ''OK'' because of the sound you created and then your playing is good, if you try to re-do it again i'm sure it would be nicer! ;)
@horsecoollover19 Sorry, this is just a Green Russian Muff demo. Not trying to demonstrate any killer playing or anything, just what the Muff sounds like.
anyone here agree that gilmours comy numb tone on the album had absolutely no hint of electric mistress at all? it was all in the revolving wem cab that he half mixed with the regular cab. elec mistress was only on live shows. heres what i think: guitar>muff>slight overdrive>little delay>one regular 4x12>the other, revolving wem cab
I have never heard of a revolving WEM cab, but the album tone was likely an Alembic F-2B preamp powering a Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker cabinet for the modulation, and a Hiwatt DR103 head with WEM cabinet housing Fane Crescendo speakers for the unmodulated tone. This is the gear David had at the time, and producer Bob Ezrin has indicated this is what he had as well. David had a Mistress too, but if he used it, it was mixed very low in the mix.
Also, if you go to my website, linked in the get info section, you will find a page about Comfortably Numb that has David's isolated guitar tracks, so give it listen and see what you think.
I have several Muff and they really need volume to sound their best. For living room playing I suggest a ProCo Rat. Not exactly the same Muff tone, but it gets you in the ballpark at lower volumes.
you could also consider getting a cornish fuzz.. you know gilmour doesnt use the big muffs anymore, usually only the cornish fuzz'es into a hiwatt amp.. i have a few videos with cornish g-2 fuzz into my hiwatt custom 50 amp.. also had the green sovtek muff here, and it does rock for sure.. but check out whats out there before you drop too much coin ;)
Well, sorry to say the modern USA Big Muffs are not the most ideal pedals for Gilmour's Muff tones. Vintage V1, V2, or V3 Muffs, or a good Muff clone like a BYOC Large Beaver, are much better. By hum I assume you mean the RF interference noise. That's just the nature of single coil pickups, unless you are saying you have more hum now than before you installed the SSL-5? If that is the case you may have a wiring problem or a bad ground.
Don't get me wrong, I love the current USA Muffs, they just don't sound as Gilmourish to my ears as the V1, V2, or V3, or even the 1990s Sovteks. I have actually gotten decent Gilmour tones out of them though. I can't post web links here, but go to my website link in the 'get info' section of this page, then click on the 'Big Muffs' link, then 'Big Muff Sound Clips'. You will find clips of every Big Muff ever made playing the Comfy Numb solo for comparison.
um not really the sans-amp was used live the ds2 was used on in utero and the ds1 was used for nevermind but he did use a big muff for some of the songs for nevermind
hey i checked out your site showing how you made your Gilmour guitar and i got a question. How is the SSL-5 when it comes to excess noise. I'm thinking about putting one in my stratocaster as well
Sure it is. It can be just as subtle or as heavy as you want it to be. I prefer the trem over using my fingers when playing my strat as I have been playing that way since I was a kid. But this was a more of a demo of the green Russian Muff tone that my average playing skills.
your muff sounds really smooth.i have the same one. how far do u crank ur twin reverb? i have a fender bassman '59 LTD which gilmour has also used atcually. lol i found out after i bought the thing. still cool. i havent tried it outside my bedroom yet, so i cant crank it really far or the roof will blow off. how far do u crank? if u switch off muff, do u still have a clean tone or is it distorted at that input level?
I keep the Twin volume around 6, but it sounds good with the Muff at lower volumes too. Even at 2 the Twin is loud. The amp tone does not break up at all. It's always clean, which is what I like with my rig. The Bassman is a good amp for Gilmour tones.
yeah my bassman doenst break up either until like 5-6, but at this volume its soooo loud. i absolutely love this amp. its the best ive ever had. it sounds so fucking good!!!
mine is loud also at 2 lol. im considering buying the fender princeton recording-amp which has power attenuator. its said not to even touch the tone even though its at low volume (attenuator-vol). but i dont believe it. im gonna try it on sunday. if it sounds good, im buying.
By noise, I assume you mean hiss? Mine don't really make much noise. The newer USA models are a bit noisy, but I don't use one of those. My Russian Muffs and Ram's Heads are fairly quite. If you have a Muff that is really noisy when the gain is turned up, you could cut the gain to 40 or 50% and then add a slight boost from a Tube Driver.
Yes, I'm talking about hiss. And running a boost into the pedal doesn't make it any more quiet. Let me ask you this- do you ever crank the amp up loud? That's when it gets bad. And I've tried the USA Muff, Skreddy Pink Flesh, and a byoc Large Beaver. They all make a ton of noise when cranked. Bummer, because the tone is great.
hmm...that sounds like an RF noise problem. Yes, I play my amp very loud. The Muffs sound best through a loud, clean tube amp. Are you using single coil pickups?
I love the Mistress, but it is way too dominant for this IMO. I was never a fan of the live Wall sound with the Mistress all over it. I like just a little modulation.
The Little Big Muff and the current USA re-issue Big Muff sound practically identical. The re-issue sounds a bit fatter, but - neither of those sound like the older Russian made green Big Muff. Similar sound, but the Russian ones have more sustain and pickup harmonics better. The USA Muffs are a bit buzzier sounding and flatter to my ears.
fantastic i think a part from sum notes go quite on the upper strings bt i get the sam problem bt cus u please tell me wat exactly u are playin through
The muff distortion is actually wide open. I can get a bit more crunch with my BK Tube Driver, but the straight muff tone is exactly what I like. Of course, you are not hearing the true sound. Youtube audio compression only gives you about 60-70% of what the real thing sounds like.
I came to your video exactly to check the muff sound. Add &fmt=18 to the end of link and the youtube sound will improve a lot =). Nice play by the way.
don't know how many times i've watched ur vid bro . jesus sloppy playing i call real talent . u kick ass bro

Thank you for that. Also, nice playing!

What do you use to make certain notes much higher pitched to stand out, is that just harmonics or are you using a pedal to perform that effect?
gome275 11 months ago
@gome275
Just subtle harmonics.

It is no different than any other vintage style single coil pickup. Unfortunately RF interference is just the nature of them.
kitraefantasyart 2 years ago
I'm a little puzzled. You play extremely well yet need to use the trem arm for vibrato, which isn't as subtle or sensitive as using your fingers.
