  • hey there , I,m currently collecting old standard eight mm home movies, I allready have a huge 9.5 pathascope collection of handcranked movies. I,m currently experimenting on the best way to copy them on a digital camera whilst they are playing on the screen or wall. I,m having varying degrees of success due to flicker and brightness issues. Love old films. maybe take a peek at the few I tried so far. My nephews been helping ,, its really fun trying regardless of the quality.

  • you're right, Donovan totally works

  • Hey Man! Great stuff! really!! I just sent you a message on your myspace account, about a possible collaboration between you and I (I make music)... hope you get the time to read it and answer. All the Best! E.

  • i dont use myspace

  • This is brilliant. What camera did you use for it? I'm thinking of buying a Nizo, I've heard they're alright.

  • how did you digitize your film? :) awesome video!

  • The way I did it was I had a super8 film projector. Projected the image onto the wall in a dark room.

Then with my camcorder set up pointing at the projected image, recorded it off the wall.

    Its called a "cheap telecine"

  • @AndyBradley awesome! thanks :) im thinking of getting a super 8 but still trying to see if developing and digitizing will be feasible here in my country. thanks!

  • no worrys. Most film labs you can post to and they will return your film on dvd or mini dv (or any format) by post.

Expect to pay around £20 + for your film, processing and transfer.

  • Neat footage. I'm about to shoot a short on super 8 for one of those "one reel" contests. Was this shot at 24fps or 18fps?

  • Neat footage. I'm about to shoot a short on super 8 for one of those "one reel" contests. Was this shot at 24fps or 18fps?

  • I put some random indie band music in the background and mute this video. Works every time!

  • word:0

  • Looks a lot better than my first Super 8 video - I just got a camera and shot my first film a couple of weeks ago. Don't know what it is about Super 8 cameras but there's such a strong urge to fling the thing around, but the footage really looks better when the camera is still. I like how you've used zoom on this, though. Also like how you've stopped and started the camera during movement. Good job and thanks for sharing it

  • thanks

  • Love this video. Great camera work and Kodak Tri-X is awesome. I use it for all my black and white photography. This really makes my want to use Super 8 for my next video project.

Thumbs up for the music as well.

  • thank you

  • i love this!!!! beautiful camera work!!

  • I'm getting one of these cameras

  • What kind of film did you use?

  • tri x reversal kodak

  • @AndyBradley Please Please Please tell me where you purchased the film!

I just got a super 8 and I cant find anywhere that sells film for a reasonable price

  • Hey, try Soho Deluxe which is in Soho, London, UK. google it.

    Or

The Widescreen Center - again in London near Baker Street I think? google it.

    Or

    EBAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY always works.

I bought a roll of Super 8 from a jessops photography store last year in portsmouth. The sales assistant didnt even know what it was. Charged me £5!!! That was a good day. But the last of the stock.

You are looking at £10 + for a role of super 8. And then proccessing costs on top - transfer p&p

  • SORRY totally forgot the obvious. KODAK!

Buy it direct from their website I think, or a quick phone call anyway. Discount for students usually.

  • @adrianojuly B and H is a good site to use if you want to find almost anything camera related.

  • this is so wonderfully beautiful and amazing. im hoping to buy a super 8 soon because i really just love looking at the cool effects that camera makes. is your super 8 really old or did you buy one recently that was made to be old?

  • @ 2:36 what f stop were you using when it gets REALLY underexposed? Just curious because i used f/stop 2 indoors with just home lights no extras and i just got my film processed. IT looks like a LONG BLACK PIECE OF TAPE. Sigh so im kinda scared to know HOW it came out and try editing it... in other words did you use lights indoors? (2:36 or 2:41 of ur friends) and what f/stops did you use? Any help appreciated incase I were to reshoot.

  • @2.36 there was bright sunshine, so at a guess it looks like two diffenrt variations, one with siloquette one without. So maybe wide open and then stopped down to 8+ for the siloquette.

I never used any additional lighting indoors. In the bedroom with my friends it was nighttime outside, the bedroom light would of been on, maybe 60w - to 100w bulb??? So I would of shot again wide open, whatever stop on that particullar lens was.

It also depends on your ISO/ASA/EI or the stock you use.

  • @AndyBradley Thanks for the quick reply. Sadly... this was my reshoot of this 1min silent film and i feel like when i watch it on the flat bed editor its going to be so underexposed.... =[ Thanks again.

  • @crazyspooks10 You need more light. Ultimately that is your problem. You could try to push the film no more than 2 stops when you get it developed, but that will cost extra when developing, and may not fully fix the problem, and will differently increase your grain. You can also try faster film. If you are shooting during the day you can open windows as much as possible and turn on all the lights in the room, or you can invest in some movie lights, which start around $50 for a decent light.

  • Great work man! I was just wondering how you did those fast edits at 0:19 and 2:12... Perhaps you could enlighten me?

    Thanks!

  • thats all just start stopping the camera, quich bursts. pixelation.

  • @AndyBradley Oh, cool. I'd like to do something similar when I get my hands on a super 8. Just so I don't screw it up - how long did you hold the film button? Just 1 or 2 second bursts?

    Thanks again!

  • on the bits with me floating in the air, u just click the trigger real fast during the point your subject is in the peak of thier jump.

Some super 8 cameras can shoot a single frame at a time which is useful. The camera I had only has the one trigger which runs the camera at full speed (18fps) and so I would just pull the trigger real quick so only a few frames of film run through the camera.

As for the pickNmix sweets that was just quick bursts also.

  • ??? and your response is?

  • really good- love the song

  • "IT ARRIVES" O.o

  • ??? what does?

  • @AndyBradley SUPER 8 TRAILER look it up

  • I absolutely love this :)

what camera did you use? :)

    thanks in advance

  • canon 814 auto zoom i think its called. Scroll down as i think its listed. Been awhile since i used it, but i think its 814? or 841?? or???

    Thanks for watching.

  • @AndyBradley thank you so much! :)

  • A guy messaged me, here it is and my reply for u peeps out in s8 land.

davenielsen78 Super 8 I was wondering, when shooting Super 8 indoors do you need a light? The manual says that it helps, but I was wondering if it's absolutely necessary.

  • yes you will need light. Photography can only work with light, so you will ALWAYS need light.

The kind of light or amount comes down to the look and effect you are after.

Also the speed (ISO,ASA) rating of your super8 film will determin the minimum amount of light needed for a proper "correct" exposure.

Lower the number, is slower film, needing more light. (less grain too)

Higher number means its faster, needing less light. (more grain)

  • You also have T = tungsten and D = daylight film.

daylight being natural daylight and tungsten being usually indoor household lighting.

If you shoot tungsten stock in daylight it will be all blue. But this can usually be corrected on your camera if it has a built in filter. Or have it done when its telecinied.

    Andrew

  • I love that the footage immediately gives the payoff shot at frame :06---perfect.

  • my ex:s

  • Very very nice!

I'm myself going to start soon with shooting Super 8, just curious: What camera did you use and did you send it to get telecined or you simply projected the image and filmed it with a videocamera?

The best i've found so far is a "Minolta autopak-8 D6", looks really neat.

Thank you for commenting back :)

  • Awesome! Beautifully done. About to shoot some tri-x myself.

  • Very cool, man. One of the best Super 8's I've seen.

  • Sooooo cool, how did you do the 0:18 to 0:22 jumps shots? Was it just shooting you jump and cutting out the leap and landing? Lol

  • exactly, just stop start on the camera.

  • Excellent....finally SOMEONE who know understands the importance of film and that it is essentially the raw source of an incredible art form. I love it. As an editor, I have ALWAYS wanted to edit a film shot on a Super 8..that noisy 18 fps is super awesome...it would be great for comedy too! I know that Chaplin shot on 35 mm film for his blockbusters....but they were definitely shot at 18 fps.

Excellent choice for music. the ORIGNAL Colors by Donovan!! You can't find that anywhere!!

  • i love....

  • Andy, watching this was so enjoyable. I'm new to Super 8 and filmmaking in general, and I see you graciously answering a lot of questions, so I thought I would ask you a couple more. After filming in Super 8, what are your options for wanting to edit it digitally? How would the processing company return it to you, on disk? And what is Telecine, in layman's terms? Thanks for being so helpful, I've already learned a lot from all of these posts.

  • telecine is to transfer film onto video.

Its funny, but alot of people do not know what film actually is these days, but you shoot on film, you send it to be processed and in return you get a print. A long strip of film material. You will then need a projector to watch the film.

BUT, as this is expensive and involves lots of equipment, and is not practical for most people, they use TELECINE or TK.

  • this puts the film onto more easily watchable formats such as mini dv video tape or DVD or hard drive or HD tape.

Most people will send their super8, get it processed and specify what they want it back on. They will normally send you the film strip (original negative) but unless you have means of playing it or further use of it, its a little useless and might aswell be thrown away.

  • @AndyBradley for goodness sake, don't ever thow away your original film. Many people transfered their old home movies to vhs tape and threw away the original film. Now they are stuck with their priceless memories stuck on a dying tape format. the tapes will eventually wear out and you can't go back to the originals to make new copies on DVD or HD format if you threw them away.

  • huh? why would I throw them away???

I do not believe in dvd, hd or vhs. Their all dead. Theres a solid state storage system, which will become the internationally recognized standard for storage and archiving of all digital media, guarenteed to never expire.

    You know what it is???

    ...

    ...

    ...35mm film.

  • @AndyBradley Too funny, never thought about that 320 Kbps streaming audio between the sprocket holes that way (dolby dig) and what another 2.2 Mbps worth of data on the edges outside the sprocket holes (sdds). Alot of information in a single frame of 35mm,

Been working with old tri-x negative in regular 8 need to post some of it one of these days.

  • sdds isnt used so mucu anymore thou I dont think. Many theatres never got equipped with the correct reading equipment.

Analogue and dolby digital are still very much standard.

    Post it!

  • love this film man. and the music aswell :) just wondering what camera you use and where you get it processed and telecined. i'm new to super-8 so i don't really have a clue. cheers :)

  • try soho film lab, london, or widescreen centre.

    its a canon autozoom 814

  • *Uses canon t2i* MUAHAHAHAHAHHAH FUCK ANALOG!!!! But this was also really good, feels, natural.

  • i do not understand...

  • nice work, i really enjoyed this.

  • very cool. I have THE #1 SUPER 8 CAMERA 4 SALE BEAULIEU 4008S-Lonzo

  • how much for?

  • First off, this is gorgeous. I have a couple technical questions for you. Is super 8mm footage only printable as 4x3 (1.37:1)?

  • very nice super 8 and tune

  • This is probably one of my favourite videos on YouTube! You're right about Donovan fitting any Super 8 film. Works so well. Love the simplicity of your short test and it feels very 60s/70s love it.

Did you use any lighting whilst shooting indoors? My camera always tells me there's low light indoors, even if it's visible through the camera.

  • hey thanks, glad u enjoyed it.

No lighting, just natural, cannot remember what speed stock tri x is, but i am sure if you get a high speed stock (500t maybe) then you could shoot indoors or at night.

Best to use a light meter, as what you see when you look through eye piece isnt nescersarily whats hitting the film.

  • very nice !!

  • thanks

  • thanks

  • When you shot this, did you immediately view it on a projector, or do you have to process it first?

  • you have to have it processed. And then you project it.

  • @AndyBradley also, how did you get music to into the emusion? I shoot 4x5 so you think my film would be really loud. I shoot tri x 320 so maybe that is a factor.

  • sorry im not sure what you mean? Music into the emusion? If you mean how is there music accompanying the footage, it was done later in post (adobe premiere pro). There use to be sound film stock available, for which you would need a film camera capable of recording sound onto film, but as dar as I know it is no longer in production. Does that help?

  • thankyou! let me know how the video goes.

  • I still LOVE this video! Inspired me to start filming with a yashica super 8-25(1967) i got about a year ago. About to buy another super 8 from 1978. Planning on shooting a music video for one of my songs on it. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

  • Charming little film, very touching, well shot too, great choice of music

  • could u get super 8 footage to mini dv?

  • yes.

  • im digging this video. I just got an old super 8 camera today. I want to shoot something. It;s a GAF anscomatic s/83

  • do it! let me know how it turns out. Also if you need any advice.

  • Congratulations! Very nice video? Did you edit it all in super 8, or have you used software tools to get it? Anyway, the result is pretty cool.

  • its all just shot in camera except the strobing light thing which i repeated a few times.

  • Really nice...I used PXR because that's all I had.

  • what a great film! ...and i love your attitude too...the comments posted here and your responses make it feel like a super 8 community! ...as a S8 noob this is very inspiring, great stuff! ...5 stars, a fave and a sub! ...look forward to seeing some more of your work!

  • randomly stumbled on this and as if the music used was donovan! awesome! and awesome video!

  • do you know how much a super 8 costs today?

  • Depends where in the world you are and what stock you are buying.

I am in the UK, I expect to pay upwards of £12 for a role of 50ft B&W - thats not including processing and telecine costs.

  • still a beautifully shot film

  • where in the world are u?

If your in London, I recmend Soho Film Lab for buying film and processing.

  • i am in the states and specifically i am in oregon

  • ah in that case i dont know where u can buy/process. I heard of one place in the states called "Dwaynes" or somthing along those lines? Google it maybe?

  • Search for Du-All cameras. The guy sells in bulk and ships. He's in New York, so shipping might be expensive, but that's the best I've got to offer. He's even got sound film in stock right now.

    Beautiful video

  • for someone who is shooting "random stuff" this is pretty damn good!

  • thanks, i have a new super8 video coming soon. Just getting it telecinied. so drop by and let me know what u think.

  • Nice little film. I can tell that you had some fun making it. I have the 514 XLS with half a roll of Tri-X in it to use up. You have inspired me to finish it. Thanks.

  • thanks, i wish i had the same inspiration to go out and shoot more.

  • lovely!

  • thankyou, i like your name:)

  • Comment removed

  • sorry i clicked remove on your last msg:s

well like i said in my other msg, this s8 was projected on a wall with a camcorder set up next to it to capture. I was very happy with the outcome.

Project the images nice an small.

Get a fairly decent 3ccd camera

    (turn off all auto functions)

Project onto green card if doing colour;)

  • so are you saying, in order to record color footage i have to project it onto a green colored screen or paper?

  • no, not atall.

But when i did mine the first time, I experimented with different colours and I feel green looked the best. Just a tip, but not for everyone.

  • i just uploaded my regular 8mm film, check it out if ur interested! you're footage is way better though.

  • if you are going to set up your own business? maybe. Depends on the quality, but there are lots of ppl out there that would like their 8mm transfered.

Otherwise it will most likely sit in a corner going unused.

  • I'm curious, did you make any adjustments to the brightness/contrast after transfer? Did you use an automatic exposure mode on the camera you used to transfer the footage?

  • no adjustments, lots of quality was lost tho compared to the film projection.

The camera was an old panasonic 3ccd, cant remember the model number.

It was manual exposure at 1/50th if thats what u mean?

    Why do u ask?

  • Was just wondering because the contrast seems to vary quite a lot between some of the shots. What would you attribute that to?

  • That was the changes in aperture during original shooting.

The stock is high contrast also

  • do you know exactly which version of colours by donovan this one is? which album it's from? I like it better than any of the ones offered on itunes.

Fantastic film by the way. I love the jumping stuff. Reminds me of the old Basquiat video. There is a modern dance company that does something similar using a strobe light and jumping in a circle in the dark. everytime the light flashes they are in the air.

  • sorry i do not, check imdb and goto a film called rules of attraction, check the soundtrack listing and there your answer shall lay...

  • Thanks!

  • Lovely. Good job. Regards from Brasil.

  • Masterpiece! this means that poetry, humor and love still are strong with the young!

    Bravo.

  • thanks, im glad you liked it.

  • i've recently purchased a super 8 camera form the 60s. Sorry to ask, but do you know where i could purchase an 8mm blank film within the UK?

i've looked on ebay but i dont seem to beable to fin anything, and i have no idea where to start :S

    thnx

    p.s good footage btw :)

  • Yes go to Soho Film Lab 02074370831

they do five different stocks I believe. But only neg processing.

They will also do you a pro telecine if you got the money for it.

  • My dad just gave me his old super 8 from when he was a kid. mid 1950's is what he said. Anyway, i was searching for footage with super 8 to get a feet for what i'd be shooting and i came across your video and i think its great. not only was it what i was looking for, it was really entertaining and i sent it to some friends saying how enjoyable it was. thanks a lot.

  • thanks im glad u enjoyed it. Let me know when your s8 is online, i would love to see it.

  • for random stuff I think it's good - nicely framed.

  • Do you loose a lot of quality because of the transfer?

I just got my first camera (Canon 814 XL-s)and I can't wait to try it out!

  • depends on how u transfer it. Mine is an 814 too. How much did u pay? and where u getting your stock/procssing done?

  • This is really interesting. I love the texture of the film

  • yes, as do i.

  • what was the camera you used for this?

  • canon auto zoom 814

    google image it to see

  • Nice film. Reversal is superior. Should be the standard.

  • hmm it does look nice, but its best to get negative if you can afford it and then have it professionally telecined, theres way more you can do.

  • The density and contrast are like nothing I've seen produced by negative. Granted there is no margin for error, the nature of the beast I suppose. UTurn used it exceptionally well.

  • how do you get the film on the computer?

  • telecine

  • I love this, and this is why I am going back to film. Video, no matter how PRO just can't match the feeling, look and real life feeling of film - super 8, 16 or 35

  • Looks very nice. Kodak Tri-X is the best super 8 film!

  • This is altogether wonderful. I just ordered my first Super 8 camera and a couple of rolls of Tri-X myself, and I can't wait to start shooting. Long live film.

  • I love that duck ;)

  • i love that duck more

  • Super 8 may not be as cheap as a mini DV tape in terms of the amount of recording time to money ration, but I got 2 rolls of Tri-X with processing for under 50 bucks, so it isnt all that exspensive. By the way, this is some beautiful footage. Good job. All edited manually or?

  • it was all in camera, except for the bit of the light bar, which i repeated a few more times because i was trying to get a propellor look so i cheated abit there:s

  • Very nice. Do you have more?!

  • this is awesome

  • thanks:)

  • scary...i think im gonna have nightmares..but its good...just reminds me of the ring

  • beautiful. you two are cute. what kind of super 8 camera did you use? i just bought a canon 1014 auto zoom electronic the other day. i can't for it to arrive.

  • nice job. how did you transfer this?

  • projected onto a wall and used a camcorder, a cheap telecine

  • good film...what is super 8 camera????....

  • super 8 camera, is quite simply a camera that takes super 8 film.

Super 8 is a gauge of film

    there is also

    Standard 8

    9.5mm

    16mm

    Super 16mm

    35mm

    70mm

  • Andrew i had a erge to animate you and i in the program i used for my minor, i want to buy a digital camera today. I still need a copy of this you!! xx

  • your videos make me smile...

  • thanks

  • excelent shooting and editing. i loved it. you are really talented at this, so i decided to subscribe to you. keep it coming!

  • thanks, ill try my best, but no promises:)

  • wow! This is amazing!

  • Muy linda filmación y muy linda canción de Donovan!!. Estoy por hacer una filmación en estos días en Super 8 con la misma película (Tri-X), y ver esto me hizo felíz. Espero que me salga así.

    Felicitaciones!

  • i couldnt agree more... ?

  • misterwho TRANSLATION just in case: Very nice film and song by Donovan. I'm about to make a film in the next few days using super 8 with the same film Tri-X. Watching this made me happy. I hope my own film turns out like this. Congratulations!

  • hahahah cheers dude:)

  • *sighs* let's just hope I win the loterry some time soon. Cheers for telling me all this anyways cause true film is something that interests me (y)

  • So how is developing and film then? It's such a pity that film is expensive cause people don't use it enough in anything anymore

  • it depends where you go, but some places can sell you and do the developing quite cheap. Buts its usually atleast £10+ for the film and then about another £10+ for developing, and thats for 50feet which is about 2 minutes, so about £20+ for every two minutes of film you shoot!

  • Oh and I'm favoriting this!

  • hahah thanks, and thanks for subscribeing:)

  • It just looks so original and unique doesn't it
