Thios beautiful song always leaves me tearful, tough old salt that I am, but this rendering, with its air of family gathering, and Kate's passing, leaves nme speechless.
Kate we still miss you so much, but keep your spirit alive and eternal by singing this song....Thank you again for what you gave this world....We will always love you and never forget.
Anna passed away this year: she was part of one of the most moving duos of the '70s. I'm glad to have heard them back then, bought the sister's albums, and been inspired by the sound of their sweet voices. Where are the McGarrigles of today? Where is their sort of sincerity and sweetness?
It means so much to me because I had the incredible fortune of sitting and playing opposite Kate at Lena's and various venues where I was always enthralled by her great dignity, talent, and sweet intelligence. I will always love this mathematician. Thank you so much!
what a great song and great singers and what a loss that we won't here her again. Thanks for all your beautiful music that is still my favourite after all those years
...ahhh,a Lovely song, and Jerry Douglas is sooo perfect for this kind of tune...I went to Mendocino for the first time in late '72...I ended up living there for eighteen wonderful and not so wonderful months...I learned a lot,and played a lot of music...several folks living there (that I still know) probably knew Kate...the footage in the video doesn't look like any terrain I recall in the county though...
This video has opened me up to a new singer though, whom I was not familiar with. This woman singing the high vocal is Karen Matheson who I think has a very beautiful voice in her own right. I recommend a listen...
This song has incredible meaning for me. I first heard it ona tape of the 1975 Mariposa Folk Festival. In 1979, deep in the night of Oct 14, I had it playing at the moment of my fathers death. He was in Mendocino only once, but it had a special hold on him. I later founded Mendocino Public Broadcasting, and this song made it to the first broadcast of KZYX on Oct 15, 1989. It is such a special work, by an incomprable artist. I will miss you Kate. Thanks for your life.
I am so moved to find this here - I was there at Mariposa in 1975, the only time I was at Marisposa and the one one memorable act I saw there was the McGarrigles.. I came to Youtube looking for a song to remember Kate by and found this posting -- and my birthday is Oct 14th (!) I feel like we must know each other -- thanks so much for opening your heart to us all here in the world -- Annie B. in Burnaby BC
Like you this song has brings me back, in my case as a student in Dublin Ireland and to earn a few bob I used act on the door of some students events, One of which were 2 concerts the McGarrigles gave on the same night in Theatre L of UCD in 1976.
I had never heard of them, knew nothing of their music, but I can still close my eyes and see them singing, Mendocino, Foolish you the Swinging Song and Heart like a wheel.
What I do remember was Joe Breen was reviewing it for the Irish Times and he was due to go on to The Boomtown Tats in the the Stadium after the first show but was so captivated stayed for the second gig and got into fierce trouble.
Differtent times how right you are the craic of youth Slan Tamaill
So sad all yesterday at the news, I couldn't listen without tears. The soulful beauty of Kate's music shaped much happiness and love in our lives. RIP. You are with us forever.
Feel so moved again - these voices - these gathered musicians - since the early 70ies this song was one of my guidelines in life - in beauty. Bye... dear Kathie! (R from amsterdam)
Every word is laden with sadness and bittersweet experience. And Kate reaches so deep inside herself with her achingly beautiful delivery. Indcidentally, it isn't long since I heard Liam Clancy speak the words "I bid farewell to the State of old New York, my home away from home" with almost as much poignancy in his last recorded interview before he died last month.
kate...you and anna have no idea how, since 1976, you have helped me. more than Any other singers you have eased me thru rough times. out of 3000 albums, i can quite easily say the first mcgarrigles would always be the one i would want with me......kate, now you are "traveling on with Jesus"...smile, sigh
years ago i was lucky enough to see Kate and Anna McGarrigle live in concert at Chicago's School of Folk. what was especially nice was the way they often switched instruments (guitar, banjo, piano) from number to number. but of course the highlight was the glorious harmony when the sisters sang together. for their encore they performed their signature song, Mendocino. when the lights came up i looked around the room and saw i certainly wasn't the only one with tears left in my eyes.
all the times I've seen them live in concert.. I never thought there would come a day when it just wouldn't be possible again... very sad for Kate and for Anna
Quite simply the most beatiful song I have ever heard. Harmony; lyrics, instrumentals. Just perfect.
I wonder why the Mcarrigles get so little exposure on mainstream media ( here in the UK anyway). Is it perhaps an age thing? I am knocking on a bit, I wonder if it has appeal to a younger audience?
finally this song is on youtube....been waiting for it...like i am waiting to return to mendocino....such songs from the soul.......so beautiful...thank you.
A better song about longing and memories would be hard to find. This was the song that brought me to them in the 70's.
