  • Excellent point.

In my desire to shorten titles and reduce confusion, I wrote Kanji as "Japanese Symbols," though their origin is China and Kanji literally means "Chinese Symbol." The Japanese use the symbols of Chinese origin (and even the pronunciation), known as Kanji in Japanese, in combination with their own phonetic letters known as Hiragana and Katakana to make their written language.

  • Kanji is not japanese symbols, it's chinese symbols/characters. Only hiragana and katakana are true japanese characters. Even the word itself says it means chinese character.

    漢字ー Kanji

    漢 ー (kan) Means "Chinese"

    字 ー (ji) Means "Character"

When I write "ABCD" I'm not using "english characters" I'm using the Latin Characters.

  • Thank your for your answer and, well, I apologize, because I am new to Japanese culture, so I did not even know that Japanese Calligraphy was a form of art, sorry! I think it is fabulous to consider "beautiful writing" as a form of art.

  • We're appreciative of your interest, so feel free to continue to ask questions! It's only an embarrassing question if you never ask!

  • Why is it "mandatory" to write your name? Or it is just for students, so that when the teacher collects their papers he knows whom they belong to?

    thanks, very interesting video.

  • Thank you for the interest in this process!

It is certainly not mandatory to write one's name.

However, it is a standard to sign an artwork, and Japanese calligraphy is no exception - and especially in a school environment where 30 kids write the same letters at once, it's a good idea. This was included in the videos to show where and how to sign a calligraphy work properly. One detail we removed for time purposes was that you should sign mainly in the bottom-left area.
