Virgin and BT Infinity are very simmilar, they both run a fibre cable to a local cabinet and then its copper (Virgin - Coax / BT - Twisted Pair) to your home
You sems to be a good guy but you are very naive as well. If I were you I wudnt be do hasty with that opinion and sayig bt infinity is doing greate job. The truth is that all services in the uk are shit. Especialy call centres.
I have recently checked with BT over there "Unlimited" Option 2 however in this day & age unlimited just don't exist.
Firstly when i rang they said the same as they did to you that it was unlimited but upon checking further with more staff (I know people who work there i dont just keep ringing BT lol) they advised me your speeds will be capped after 300GB per month, admittedly thats a lot of downloading but its not Unlimited like they constantly state.
I have Virgin ADSL Broadband, I have to say they are the worst for Broadband, whether ADSL or Fibre. At the time I was supposed to get 8mbps and all the time I was getting 512kbps.
i just switched to bt infinity and the speed difference i get to what i had before is amazing i was already with bt and i was getting 8 mb download and 0.5 upload now i am getting 42 download and 8 mb upload i definetly advise if your going to get broadband then look at this ive never had virgin media before so i cant make comparrison with them but i know that if you cant get virgin but you can get infinity definetly go with especially if there is more than 2 pcs in your house
I am thinking of getting Bt Infinity but i would like to know if any of you are using Infinity on your line but have your calls with a different provider say; sky, talktalk, o2, plusnet etc.
I would like to retain my calls with Sky as i have the Sky Talk Unlimited package on my line, it is cheaper for my household to call abroad. I pay line rental to BT so i have a BT line. Does anyone know with 100% certainty if this is possible?
(Other providers such as plusnet offer fibre only.)
I'm currently in a household which is with Virgin Media National, just like you were before you moved to Infinity. Infinity is coming to my local town in January 2013, so we have 1 year and 6 days to go! Virgin Media, like you said, provide the cable to your house. So we cannot continue with Virgin Media, as we are definitely going to Fibre Optic once available. Looks like I'm switching too!
Before you were connected to BT Infinity, what was your expected connection speed? I'm due to go live on the 28th and my expected speed is 30mbps (60X faster than what I get at the minute!) I'm just curious as to how accurate BT's estimates are. Cheers :0)
traffic management for virgin . solution download all your stuff from 9.30pm- to 9.30am,im on 10Mb and the capping is only like 5 hours and i get 3GB speed through the day . even if it gets capped to quarter of the speed it doesnt effect my gaming. if your on 50Mb you dont get any traffic management what so ever.. so if you like downloading tons of files.. then get that.
You've chosen the wrong server to test on. I always test on the ones down the South. I sometimes get bad latency pings and speeds with certain servers on there.
im just waiting till january when my city has infinity and knowing that they wont have to run cables will make it very good for any one wanting fibre optic especially the money you would save will be good and evrything you get with fibre optic will be future proofing so you wouldnt need to upgrade until some new kind of broadband comes out
i connect my xbox to laptop to the router via network bridging. it worked with talktalk and did work with bt infinity for a couple of hours and now it cant connect to xbox live but i still have internet
let me explain how slow my sky broadband is: I am downloading FIFA 12 demo on Xbox Live. I have been downloading it for 4 days now and it is only at 34%!!! I am paying for 20MB as my area doesn't receive any faster broadband but I only get 0.22MB!! Fuck SKY!
@NorthWeezy2010 your household must have too many devices trying to connect to the router, switch the router off, wait for 10 seconds and switch it back on. I have sky and downloaded the fifa 12 demo on my PS3 in 1 hour and dl speeds of 1.2mb/s. sky doesn't suck, its probably because all the ip addresses on your router are all used up and now trying to share between devices, if you switch the router off and on, it resets ip addresses, and therfore your internet will be faster.
@lfcandpo Yes. Compared to sky Microsoft Zune movies download 3-4 times faster - SD movie in under 10 mins HD movie probably in 30 mins (havent tested). Also BT Hub has wireless N compatible with XBOX meaning you can put your xbox further away in a different room than your BT hub and still get full speed net wirelessly.
hey just wondering how come you are getting 50 mbps when on infinity because im wondering if i will get teh same sort of thing as i am getting talktalk fibre in october and they estimate the speed at 36.78mbps soo do you think i would probably get faster than that ? :)
wow im not even gunna lie but i didnt ANYTHING about this stuff... im on virgin and the thing i have trouble is that the wifi is constantly disconnecting by itself as if it has its own mind, but until i watched this.. i learnt quite alot today tbh, thanks for the vid ;D
BT is very good because they give you an estimate of the speed and it only varies by 1 mbps sometimes but normally its more then what they said it will be
You most likely got 50.51Mbps per second because you have an antivirus/security suite caching the files from speedtest net, giving you a false result. I've seen many people fall for false results given. If i activate Kaspersky AV on my PC now, my 6Mb internet shows as 80Mb DL on Speedtest, because it's giving a false result.
Just a heads up. I'm getting IDNET FTTC (basically BT Infinity) in Sept. Can't wait..
BT Infinity Option 2 has no capping whatsoever, I called up BT and they told me they scrapped the FUP for BT Infinity Option 2, you can download as much as you want without your speeds being reduced.
@NETrevgadget in the first bit, you mentioned that fibre optic only goes to the green box and you still use the regular copper cable to connect to the green box, is the speed affected in anyway?
@propainish Theoretically it is, since the full potential of fibre optic cannot be achieved unless it is fibre optic to the user like in virgin media fibre optic broadband (hence their advertised speed is higher than that of BT infinity), but from my experience, my highest speed is 50Mbit/s which is much higher than the advertised, and my average download speed is around 40Mbit/s so it does not actually affect your connection that much.
@NETrevgadget BT Infinity are coming to my house on the 28th of this month and they are going to install the Fibre Optics and replace the old cables. It seems pretty cool!
Like all ISP's it's hit and miss, I'm with Virgin and swear by it. I get 30/31 mbps and I'm paying for 30 so I'm happy, always have been with Virgin. I only download about 30gb max movies, xbox demo's etc but game online everyday, but have never been capped. Virgin got voted by ofcom the only ISP to provide what they actually sell. BT and the others provide on average 50% of the speed they advertise.
@ranranbobandy I agree. My family has been with virgin for at least 8-9 years, but the recent years they just have not been doing good enough. Though, some of my friends with virgin have never had a problem.
Looks great. I wish we had more broadband options in my part of the US. I hate being limited to Comcast (it's okay) or some form of DSL (much slower). I hope BT Infinity works well for you. Good luck!
@alkiller1992 no, you are free to download torrents but the download speeds of the torrents will be reduced during peak times depending on the usage across the whole BT infinity network.
Virgin is NOT fibre optic to the house!

You are so lucky to get it. BT fucken sucks. They are only giving us 2MB of download speeds and they don't care about us because:
*we were the last village in our area to get broadband
*The chairman lives near us and he gets fiber
* They swap cables in our area (so if somebody complains the good cable goes to them and the shit cable goes to somebody else's)
But people have voted for it and BT is just ignoring us. Also our council will not do anything.
