Weird.. I understand maybe 50% or more like the idea what shes saying but not word by word.. and thats because I understand languages like swedish, norwegian, danish, german, english haha so weird.. I didnt think that afrikaans sounded like that.
Well, it is "stuck" in the past in a manner of speaking. Same thing that happened with Canadian French. The two languages both left their motherlands and went their separate ways long before the internet and telecommunications could keep the languages contemporary with each other. Canadians still speak French the way people in France spoke in the 17th Century...the same thing happend with Afrikaans and Dutch. The Afrikaans accent still sounds the way people spoke in Holland in the 17 Century.
If one more idiot is going to say...wow it sounds like Swedish, Danish, English, Dutch etc...I'm going to crap in my pants!!! Afrikaans is a Western Germanic language!.It was brought to South Africa by Dutch sailors and the roots of the language is Western Germanic and derived from 17th century Dutch. Basically if Dutch people want to hear how their ancestors somehow sounded like in the 17th century they can simply listen to Afrikaans.
@annagilda1 But I don't understand something. Are Flemish and Dutch considered to be separate languages? Why do the peple tell them appart as if they were different languages?
@MrBastilleCreole Well Flemish is a dialect of Dutch. I am Dutch and I can understand Flemish just as well, so yeah basically it is very similar. Maybe something like the difference between English English and American English. (Sort of.)
It's inheritantly the same language, but there are some small differences. (Accent would be one of them.
@MrBastilleCreole quite simple one (charlize) is speaking in africaner or afrikaans if you like the journalist is talking in a dutch dialect called vlaams (flemisch) so actualy neither of them is though dutch will be able to understand perfectlie as afrikaans is an very old form of current dutch and flemisch is like uk english to usa english
@Rosannasfriend Its a Proven Fact that the living conditions were better for all During Apartheid not to mention the Economy was allot beter under sanctions than what it currently is. And where on earth did she get educated that she doesnt know that mandela was a terrorist and planted bombs and landmines?
@mirageF1AZ economies typically get worse after a necessary revolution. The saying "things get worse before they get better" comes to mind. I do not believe that this is a good enough reason to allow social inequalities to continue. There is a chance for the country to flourish more than it did before, because MORE people will be involved in its success.
@Rosannasfriend Does it take 18years?Hitler Built germany from Scratch to Superpower in less than 10 years.I mean just take a look at the infrastructure, the crime the list goes on.there are so much inequalities in the country on a social, economic and political level. The sad thing really is that only a small group of people are drawing benefits out of the country. So there is no middle class anymore either rich or poor, then you are stuck with a recipe for a revolution (see french revolution 1789)
@mirage F1AZ Mandela planted bombs and land mines?. Really? He personally did that? Please cite a source for that 'fact'. You write 'Its a Proven Fact that living conditions were better...' etc. I don't think you know what a 'proven fact' means.
@notsqrt2 Okey just read his book "a long walk to freedom" in wich he says that the victims of the church street bombs and the landmines on the farmers roads are justified. Aparhteid build Universities, schools, factories, radio stations for the people in the homelands, they had their own armies and goverments in the homelands,SA had no say in those countries. What more could they want? These are all proven and well documented, but rarely braught to light because apartheid needs to made look bad.
@godofthisshit Well it was ALLOT better than it currently is. Back then you could sleep with your house's doors open and all would be fine! Good luck trying that now!
@godofthisshit I beg to differ because they had their homeland in wich they could govern themselfs independend from SA they had everything a country could want. So what was their problem? ALLOT of my black colleagues state that Apartheid was strick, but they would rather have it over again than this corrupt democracy.
@mirageF1AZ I understand where you're coming from. but going back to the original point of charlize theron embracing Mandela. Theron seems to see the human spirit, essense or soul, irrespective of racer, religion, wealth, etc of the person in front of her. It's a quality I personally admire.
@notsqrt2 Yes, mabey she is a person with some good qualities, I am no-one to judge her. Do you think the world would have treated her otherwise if she said that she voted for the NP or some other party that disaprove of black freedom?
@Rosannasfriend And yes I was loyal to Apartheid, I faught Against the Communists on the Border Because I somehow knew what was going to happen when they march to the Union Building and hoist their red flag in Pretoria, Exactly what is happing right now!
@mirageF1AZ I have respect for the guys who did the border stint. I missed call up by a few years. Nevertheless try and stick to facts. Communists are not hoisting their flag in Pretoria. I'm not sure if you actually believe this in some way or if you are deliberately trying to misinform.
@notsqrt2 Im not trying to misinform anybody, what I am trying to make clear is the people we were fighting are now in charge, the system is becoming more and more communist. Example the nationalization of the mines are communist ideals, supressing press freedom is communist, goverment taking land from rightfull owners without compensation is communist. All those blood, guts, mud, tears and a lost childhood ripped away...Nobody understands why we are bitter.
@mirageF1AZ Nationalization is being pushed by people like Malema to get popular support. The bailouts during the credit crisis for some amercan and european banks was /is effectively nationalization. What troubles me is the poor state of education and poor sevice delivery. It's morally wrong and the poor will look for other quick fixes such as communism and land grabs etc. I grew up in a safe, well run South Africa so I understand the frustration.
@mirageF1AZ And how would you know who theron voted for? What do you mean voted for Mandela anyway since that was impossible. Do you mean the ANC? Are you even aware that Mandela has never been a communist and favoured the British parliamentary system.
@notsqrt2 Well Madela was trained in Exile by communists, he was the head of the ANC and the ANC's trade union is COSATO and we ALL know that Cosato is communist inspired. Joe slovo and Mandela were friends and Joe Slovo is the Biggest Communist ever! Need I say more?
@mirageF1A AFAIK COSATU is a trade union which happens to have strong ties to the ANC but also differences in policies and beliefs. I don't get the communist link. In fact Vavi seems to speak a lot of sense in his criticism of the self enrichment trends of the elected ANC members. It was mainly communist countries which supported the ANC during apartheid so it's natural that some came to believe in that doctrine.
@rh2th it is either something about abandoning South Africa in favor of America, or something even more brilliant about her an awful white South African who helped oppress blacks there. Take your pick.
@MrPussycat411 That is BS you moron. Theron's non racist, non sexist etc views, probably offends some racists with ultra small world views. Those are the truly trashy South Africans.
@RoughTemptation Yes it does..In fact, Flemish sounds very similar to the Dutch spoken in Southern Netherlands...some words have a different meaning, but the rest are the same..As a matter of fact, Afrikaans is much more different from Dutch than Flemish is from Dutch..
@RoughTemptation Flemish doesn't come FROM dutch, they just have the same roots, not really the same.Whereas afrikaans is an evolution of dutch that was spoken a few centuries ago.
@RoughTemptation Yes, exactly and Afrikaans is another language as well except it's the evolution of an old one kind of like latin and let's say italian, except the time frame is not the same at all.
@miyounova If you're Dutch, I'm impressed. Most of you just flat-out state everywhere that Flemish is derived from Dutch, which is wrong of course. Our standard Flemish is just Dutch with different accents, but the actual Flemish dialects (same as the Dutch dialects like Hollands, etc) are FAR older than standard Dutch and are its ancestors. Flemish = from the 10th century, the first form of standard Dutch from the 16th century.
Another thing many people don't seem to grasp is that using Dutch for what is now the country of the Netherlands is a more recent development. The original meaning of Dutch (coming from the archaic Diets) was 'people and languages of the Low Countries' and pointed to what are now the Dutch and the Flemish. before the countries came to be we were all called Dutch, more than a few historical references to the Dutch should actually be referring to the Flemish nowadays.
and then there's the fact that the terms in english are different from what we use in dutch. in dutch we say nederland (singular) to the country, and nederlanden (plural) to the historic region (that includes belgium - belgium was the latin word for netherlands) that nederland derives its name from. half our flemish history gets attributed to the country of the netherlands due of that confusion. the colonisation of the americas for example, that was the dutch & the flemish.
@Synthiotics because the notion of "standard" in a language is actually quite recent. Dutch and Flemish have a common ancerstor and I think, if I'm not mistaken (because no, I'm not dutch, I'm french), that the resemblance between Dutch and Flemish is more important than between French and Italian for example, meaning that the common ancestor is linguistically closer to Dutch and Flemish.
@miyounova Dutch and Flemish are the same languages. The term Flemish isn't an official term, it's only used to refer to the Belgian speakers of the Dutch language.
@josafodathekal informally you can call our dutch flemish (vlaams), but he's actually speaking standard belgian-dutch. strictly speaking flemish are the dialects of east- & west-flanders, 2 of belgium's so-called 5 flemish provinces. but now i'm confusing you...
@Synthiotics The dutch refer to the language as Nederlands, which ofcourse you know, means the language of the low lying region...Dutch belongs to the Anglo-Germanic family of languages, having its influences from archaic German, with strong influences from English owing to its merchant shipping history...that being said, linguists generally dont differentiate between the languages and considers them the same, with Flemish being considered the regional dialectical variant of Dutch..
@Synthiotics But thank you for your thorough answer...I din mean to offend anyone by saying that Flemish 'comes' from Dutch..I just meant that both are essentially the same with dialectical variations.
I've never been more proud of my home language haha Afrikaans is a cool language and I have one of those English accents that overseas people ALWAYS make fun of!! But its good to know we get noticed even if it isn't always in a positive way.. Mandela for world Leader!!!
@mettabee well since the dutch colonised south africa so long ago, some of the words, grammar, and pronunciation have changed over time. it's why dutch, afrikaans, flanders (belgium), and other people from other dutch speaking areas can all understand each other.
@mettabee Compare it to english accents. I am sure you are familiar with the differences between Scottish accents and Australian accents and English accent. Im dutch and i would consider Afrikaans to be a strong dutch accent, meaning that its 90% mutually intelligable, but that Afrikaans has gotten some pretty large influxes from other languages, and undergone some significant changes in syntax and worduse...but the grammar is mostly the same i think.
@ApemanMonkey Baie means a lot...for example 'ek het baie boeke' means I have a lot of books. Its used in different ways like 'ek hou baie van sjokolade' would be 'I really like chocolate'. Hoop ek het 'n bietjie gehelp :)
@Yobidefy Afrikaans is a language derived from Dutch which is mainly spoken in South Africa. The interviewer speaks Dutch with a Belgian accent and Charlize Theron speaks in Afrikaans, you may notice they seem to have different accents. The languages are quite similar but they do have some big differences; I've been learning Dutch for two years and can understand most Afrikaans when it's written without trouble. It's a bit more difficult for me when it's spoken.
@Mysticive Interesting! It makes more sense like this than the other way around, though. You know Dutch perfectly, so you have a lot of "tolerance" when hearing it spoken, whereas I don't. But with texts, I have a lot of time to think about it and to look up a word & then I remember what it means. Like if I see "kry" I have the time to think "OK, it means krijgen", but when it's spoken she'd already be three words further if I always had to think that :P
@Yobidefy There are 11 official languages in South Africa, Afrkaans is one of them. The other ones are: English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.
the thing is, if most Dutch people speak Dutch llike the presenter above, we Afrikaans people would have no difficulty understanding Dutch. The only problem is most Dutch people do not speak Dutch like the Presenter (Flemish Dutch?) above.
@dangkoen because dutch is also the language of flanders... dutch, coming from diets, originally meant "people and languages of the low countries". it was not a nationality at first nor a single language. the flemish are the southern dutch and the 3 main ancestors of the dutch language are hollands, brabants and flemish.
although we do say flemish to southern dutch and hollands to northern dutch, unoficially
@dangkoen Well, the Netherlands and Flanders do have a language union. And combine this with the Flemish tendency to focus on their language to distance themselves from the French language of the Walloons, they tend to master Dutch better then Dutch people themselves. At the 'National dictee of Netherlandish language", in which both Dutch and Flemish people participate, there have been more Flemish winners then Dutch.
What does she say from 0:44 to 0:56. I get the dream part, but the part before I can't figure out how to spell and therefor I cannot find a translation. Could anyone write it? Wouldn't mind the whole conversation, but that's a bit too much I think :b
The interviewer first asks: Waarom was deze film zo belangrijk voor jou?
He then asks: Maar was het niet moeilijk?
Afrikaans I don't know, but piecing together the familiar Dutch words, the response from Charlize goes something like: Moeilijk is het verkeerde woord te gebruiken.
(p.s I have only been learning Dutch for about 2 years.)
*slechts*(only) stukken en brokken. If you write that sentence like this it is better Dutch
@Koffi87 Johanhasflu1982 has that part right. The presenter goes on to ask if its different from, for eg Hancock, with such a mix going from big budget to then something more dramatic. She says she tries not to think of it like that, rather she thinks of it as going on to work on something that she really wants to do and that she likes all types of films. She likes big budget and small movies but the most important thing is that its a good movie and to work with good people.
My mum grew up in South-Africa so I've always felt kinda bonded with it :) Living in Holland myself so I totally understand her, Afrikaans is such a great language .
Nog 'n vraag... Is there such a thing as Afrikaans cinema? I've never heard of a movie in Afrikaans. There's an Australian movie called "Breaker Morant" that takes place in S.A. during the Boer wars, and there's a little bit of Afrikaans spoken in it, and in "Tsotsi" there's some Afrikaans mixed in with the various other languages. Anyone know of anything?
Afrikaans is one of my favorite languages and I've always wanted to hear her speak it... but is it just me, or does she speak it with something of an American accent? Been away from home too long, perhaps...
@66tmarch sy praat perfekt afrikaans , definitief! zonder accent. she talks it just like the others.. i dont hear any of an accent. im dutch myself , and i understand anything of it. so.... :)
@H3rpez Actually 0.55 sounds like "För mig" but yeah a bit like English Mixed with Swedish but it's still Afrikaans and it has over 70% words from Dutch that's kinda odd.
Have any of you people ever heard of Wikipedia? Stop giving your own opinions of where Afrikaans comes from and go google it. In the wise words of "Die Antwoord", Jou Ma Se Poes Jou Dom Kont!
Mooi so....Die dame kan nogsteeds die taal praat. En sy is aantreklik. Ja, ek bly in Eirland sedertien 1998 maar ek kan nogsteeds my lewe in Durban en ander plekke in Suid Afrika onthou. Ek wens vir die ou dae.. Sonskyn....braai , strand en al my vriende. Eeerdags sal ek vir n' vakansie daroor gaan

and then there's the fact that the terms in english are different from what we use in dutch. in dutch we say nederland (singular) to the country, and nederlanden (plural) to the historic region (that includes belgium - belgium was the latin word for netherlands) that nederland derives its name from. half our flemish history gets attributed to the country of the netherlands due of that confusion. the colonisation of the americas for example, that was the dutch & the flemish.
Synthiotics 2 weeks ago
but yeah.. confusing...
Synthiotics 2 weeks ago 2
@Synthiotics because the notion of "standard" in a language is actually quite recent. Dutch and Flemish have a common ancerstor and I think, if I'm not mistaken (because no, I'm not dutch, I'm french), that the resemblance between Dutch and Flemish is more important than between French and Italian for example, meaning that the common ancestor is linguistically closer to Dutch and Flemish.
miyounova 1 week ago
@miyounova Dutch and Flemish are the same languages. The term Flemish isn't an official term, it's only used to refer to the Belgian speakers of the Dutch language.
crapzoidblog 1 week ago
@josafodathekal informally you can call our dutch flemish (vlaams), but he's actually speaking standard belgian-dutch. strictly speaking flemish are the dialects of east- & west-flanders, 2 of belgium's so-called 5 flemish provinces. but now i'm confusing you...
Synthiotics 2 weeks ago
@Synthiotics The dutch refer to the language as Nederlands, which ofcourse you know, means the language of the low lying region...Dutch belongs to the Anglo-Germanic family of languages, having its influences from archaic German, with strong influences from English owing to its merchant shipping history...that being said, linguists generally dont differentiate between the languages and considers them the same, with Flemish being considered the regional dialectical variant of Dutch..
josafodathekal 2 weeks ago
@Synthiotics But thank you for your thorough answer...I din mean to offend anyone by saying that Flemish 'comes' from Dutch..I just meant that both are essentially the same with dialectical variations.

I've never been more proud of my home language haha Afrikaans is a cool language and I have one of those English accents that overseas people ALWAYS make fun of!! But its good to know we get noticed even if it isn't always in a positive way.. Mandela for world Leader!!!

it just sounds like dutch, what is the difference?
mettabee 1 month ago
@mettabee well since the dutch colonised south africa so long ago, some of the words, grammar, and pronunciation have changed over time. it's why dutch, afrikaans, flanders (belgium), and other people from other dutch speaking areas can all understand each other.
missrdubc 1 month ago
@mettabee Compare it to english accents. I am sure you are familiar with the differences between Scottish accents and Australian accents and English accent. Im dutch and i would consider Afrikaans to be a strong dutch accent, meaning that its 90% mutually intelligable, but that Afrikaans has gotten some pretty large influxes from other languages, and undergone some significant changes in syntax and worduse...but the grammar is mostly the same i think.

what is afrikaans?
Yobidefy 1 month ago
@Yobidefy Afrikaans is a language derived from Dutch which is mainly spoken in South Africa. The interviewer speaks Dutch with a Belgian accent and Charlize Theron speaks in Afrikaans, you may notice they seem to have different accents. The languages are quite similar but they do have some big differences; I've been learning Dutch for two years and can understand most Afrikaans when it's written without trouble. It's a bit more difficult for me when it's spoken.
lkjkorn19 1 month ago
@lkjkorn19 So strange! For me it's easier to understand it when she speaks it! But i'm a native Belgian of course! :)
Mysticive 4 weeks ago
@Mysticive Interesting! It makes more sense like this than the other way around, though. You know Dutch perfectly, so you have a lot of "tolerance" when hearing it spoken, whereas I don't. But with texts, I have a lot of time to think about it and to look up a word & then I remember what it means. Like if I see "kry" I have the time to think "OK, it means krijgen", but when it's spoken she'd already be three words further if I always had to think that :P
lkjkorn19 4 weeks ago
@Yobidefy There are 11 official languages in South Africa, Afrkaans is one of them. The other ones are: English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.

the thing is, if most Dutch people speak Dutch llike the presenter above, we Afrikaans people would have no difficulty understanding Dutch. The only problem is most Dutch people do not speak Dutch like the Presenter (Flemish Dutch?) above.
JOSHTRUS 1 month ago
@JOSHTRUS The reporter is Flemish, but believe it or not, he is speaking grammatically correct Dutch :)
dangkoen 1 month ago
@dangkoen because dutch is also the language of flanders... dutch, coming from diets, originally meant "people and languages of the low countries". it was not a nationality at first nor a single language. the flemish are the southern dutch and the 3 main ancestors of the dutch language are hollands, brabants and flemish.
although we do say flemish to southern dutch and hollands to northern dutch, unoficially
keuteltjes 1 month ago
@dangkoen Well, the Netherlands and Flanders do have a language union. And combine this with the Flemish tendency to focus on their language to distance themselves from the French language of the Walloons, they tend to master Dutch better then Dutch people themselves. At the 'National dictee of Netherlandish language", in which both Dutch and Flemish people participate, there have been more Flemish winners then Dutch.

@Koffi87 - "Difficult is the wrong word to use. It's fantastic working on material that gives you that challenge."
Johanhasflu1982 1 month ago
What does she say from 0:44 to 0:56. I get the dream part, but the part before I can't figure out how to spell and therefor I cannot find a translation. Could anyone write it? Wouldn't mind the whole conversation, but that's a bit too much I think :b
Koffi87 1 month ago
@Koffi87 "What does she say from 044 to 056"?
The interviewer first asks: Waarom was deze film zo belangrijk voor jou?
He then asks: Maar was het niet moeilijk?
Afrikaans I don't know, but piecing together the familiar Dutch words, the response from Charlize goes something like: Moeilijk is het verkeerde woord te gebruiken.
(p.s I have only been learning Dutch for about 2 years.)

TheObelix876 1 month ago
@Koffi87 Johanhasflu1982 has that part right. The presenter goes on to ask if its different from, for eg Hancock, with such a mix going from big budget to then something more dramatic. She says she tries not to think of it like that, rather she thinks of it as going on to work on something that she really wants to do and that she likes all types of films. She likes big budget and small movies but the most important thing is that its a good movie and to work with good people.
